  • 2.Last year my summer holiday was spoiled by my bringing along a modern convenience that was too convenient for my own good:the iPad.Instead of looking at nature,I checked my e-mail.Instead of paddling a small boat,I followed my Twitter feed(推特簡(jiǎn)訊).Instead of reading great novels,I stuck to reading four newspapers each morning.I was behaving as if I were still in the office. My body was on vacation, but my head wasn't.
So this year I made up my mind to try something different:withdrawal from the Internet.I knew it wouldn't be easy, since I'm bad at self-control.But I was determined.I started by giving the iPad to my wife.
The cellphone signal at our house was worse than in the past, making my attempts at cheating an experience in frustration.I was trapped, forced to go through with my plan.Largely breaking away from e-mail,Twitter and my favorite newspaper websites,I had few ways to connect to the world except for the radio-and how much radio can one listen to,really?I had to do what I had planned to do all along:read books.
This experience has had a happy ending. With determination and the strong support of my wife,I won in my vacation struggle against the Internet, realizing finally that it was I,not the iPad,that was the problem.I knew I had won when we passed a Starbucks and my wife asked if I wanted to stop to use the Wi-Fi."I don't need it,"I said.
However,as we return to post-vacation life,a harder test begins:Can I continue when I'm back at work?
There are times when the need to know what's being said right now is great.I have no intention of giving up my convenience completely. But I hope to resist the temptation to check my e-mail every five minutes, which leads to checking my Twitter feed and a website or two.
I think a vacation is supposed to help you rest your brain to become more productive. Here I hope this one worked.
(1)What do we know about the author's last summer vacation?

A.He was determined to enjoy the beautiful view.
B.His iPad ruined his plan of finishing a great novel.
C.He hated himself for acting as if he were working on vacation.
D.He felt satisfied that he had stuck to his usual timetable.
(2)When back at work, the author will probably choose to

A.keep control of when and how to use the Internet
B.continue to road more and more books
C.stay away from the Internet for ever
D.stop checking what is being said right now completely
(3)What is the author's opinion of a great vacation in the passage?

A.A vacation is having nothing to do but read all day.
B.A vacation proves that a life of pleasure is overvalued.
C.A vacation means a change of pace to make one more creative.
D.A vacation is a period of time to do whatever one wishes to.

  • 3.It was once common to regard Britain as a society with class distinction. Each class had unique characteristics.
In recent years, many writers have begun to speak the 'decline of class' and 'classless society' in Britain. And in modern day consumer society everyone is considered to be middle class.
But pronouncing the death of class is too early.A recent wide-ranging society of public opinion found 90 percent of people still placing themselves in particular class;73 percent agreed that class was still a vital part of British society;and 52 percent thought there were still sharp class differences. Thus, class may not be culturally and politically obvious, yet it remains an important part of British society.Britain seems to have a love of stratification
One unchanging aspect of a British person's class position is accent. The words a person speaks tell her or his class.A study of British accents during 1970s found that a voice sounding like a BBC newsreader was viewed as the most attractive voice,Most people said this accent sounded 'educated' and 'soft'.The accents placed at the bottom in this study,on the other hand, were regional(地區(qū)的)city accents. These accents were seen as 'common' and 'ugly'.However,a similar study of British accents in the US turned these results upside down and placed some regional accents as the most attractive and BBC English as the least. This suggests that British attitudes towards accent have deep roots and are based on class prejudice.
In recent years, however, young upper middle-class people in London, have begun to adopt some regional accents,in order to hide their class origins. This is an indication of class becoming unnoticed. However, the 1995 pop song 'Common People' puts forward the view that though a middle-class person may 'want to live like common people' they can never appreciate the reality of a working-class life.
(1)A recent study of public opinion shows that in modern Britain

A.it is time to end class distinction
B.most people belong to middle class
C.it is easy to recognize a person's class
    D.people regard themselves socially different
(2)The word stratification in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to

    A.variety
    B.division
    C.a(chǎn)uthority
    D.qualification
(3)The study in the US showed that BBC English was regarded as

    A.regional
    B.educated
    C.prejudiced
    D.unattractive
(4)What is the main idea of the passage?

    A.The middle class is expanding
B.A person's accent reflects his class
C.Class is a key part of British society
    D.Each class has unique characteristics.

  • 4.Procrastination(拖延癥) Tech Support Choosing between immediate satisfaction and future benefit can easily lead to shortsighted decisions:Watching TV instead of going to the gym,for example,or going through social media rather than working on a challenging project.(1)

To guide individuals toward greatest choices,F(xiàn)alk Lieder,a cognitive(認(rèn)知) scientist, and his colleagues designed a digital tool called a "cognitive prosthesis." It uses artificial intelligence to match a decision's immediate reward with its long-term worth after making a to-do list. The researchers developed a set of models and algorithms(算法) that consider various elements such as a list of tasks,an individual's unwillingness to each and the amount of time available.(2)
It helps to encourage that person to complete them all.
The idea was to turn the challenging projects that people pursue in the real world into a game like environment. "The point system gives people achievable goals that signal that they're making progress." Lieder says.
    (3)
The results, published online in August in Nature Human Behavior, revealed that the AI support system helped people make better, faster decisions and procrastinate less-and it made them more likely to complete all the assigned tasks. In one experiment,in which the researchers presented 120 participants with a list of several writing assignments.(4)
However, the rate was only 56 percent for those not using it.
Lieder says one of the current tool's limitations is that it can handle only short to-do lists.(5)
At the same time, they are working with a company called Complice to integrate the tool into an existing to-do list app.The researchers also plan to run field experiments to see how well their cognitive prosthesis succeed in the real world.

A.People often struggle to do what's best for them in the long run.
B.The team tested this tool in a series of experiments with human subjects.
C.The system then assigns reward points to each task in a way that is customized.
D.And now,he and his team are trying to develop it up for a larger number of tasks.
E.They found that 85 percent of individuals who used the tool completed all their tasks.
F.A study was conducted to find a way to help people increase their decision-making ability.
G.This tool is a convincing demonstration that procrastination is something that this strategy can help with quite a lot.

  • 19.When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades,I sometimes allowed them to walk to and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day,a small friend followed them home after school. This friend had short legs and long floppy ears, with a furry coat and tiny spots across her nose. She was the cutest puppy I had ever seen and my girls begged me to keep her.
She was not more than twelve weeks old.She had no identifying marks of any sort.I didn't know what to do.I thought about an ad in the lost and found but I really didn't want to.It would break the kids' hearts if someone should show up.Besides, her owners should have watched her more closely,I thought.
By the end of the week she was part of our family. She was very clever and good with the girls. The Following week something told me to check the lost and found section in the local paper. One ad caught my attention and my heart sank at what I read.Someone was searching for a lost puppy near our grade school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook.I could not ask myself to pick up the phone.
Instead,I pretend I hadn't seen the ad.I quickly put the paper aside and tried to ignore it?I never say anything about it to the kids or my husband.
By now we had named the puppy. She looked like a Molly,so we called her Molly. She followed the girls everywhere they went. When they went outside, she was one step behind them. When they did housework she was there to help.
There was only one problem with this perfect dog:my conscience(良心)was bothering me.I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our Molly was the puppy they were desperately looking for.
