Imagine you're enjoying a cool spring evening in a local park.Your family is sitting on a blanket, having a picnic. The sun has just set on a beautiful day.Suddenly, you notice blue lights in the distance. You watch, confused,as they hover(盤(pán)旋) near the horizon. That's when you feel the ground start to shake. It's an earthquake!
The quake is over quickly.Your family members are unharmed. But you're still left (1)w
:What were those lights?Where did they come from? Were they connected to the earthquake?
You just experienced a phenomenon (現(xiàn)象) called earthquake lights.People have reported these sightings for thousands of years - since at least 89 B.C.For many years, though, scientists were skeptical (懷疑地).After all, think about it mysterious (神秘的) lights in the sky?It sounds more like something from science fiction than from (2)r

How would you explain earthquake lights?Could they be extra electricity? Are there some type of reflection(映像)?Might they be the Earth's (5)w
that an earthquake is about to happen?Experts have worked hard to learn about earthquake lights and they may explain them .Experts say that before an earthquake, the tension (壓力) in the ground may break apart groups of negatively charged oxygen atoms ( 帶負(fù)電荷的氧原子).When this happens, these atoms rush to the surface. There, they (6)c

This may explain where the light comes from, but what decides its shape?Experts aren't quite sure. They're still learning about this topic.Additionally, the lights don't appear with every earthquake. In fact, they're quite rare. There are still a lot of (7)u
things about earthquake lights.Investigate further - maybe you'll be the one to find the answers!

  • 57.The story took place in the early 1990s.I was barely 20 years old and my hero, the film star Robert Downey Jr.,was years away from putting on the Iron Man suit.
I was escorting (陪同) my grandmother to an event at a garden party. My grandma was still beautiful, smart and attractive even in her 80s.However,her type of intelligence did not include recognizing young celebrities.
I pointed out Robert Downey Jr.jye.ai her when he arrived,in a gorgeous cream-colored suit, with Sarah Jessica Parker on his arm.My grandmother shrugged (聳肩),far more interested in piling her paper plate with cjye.aiese.He wasn't Cary Grant or Gregory Peck. Why did she care?
After listening to a few speeches,my grandmother and I stood up to make our exit. But as she rose, she tripped on a wheelchair and fell down.Soon,I saw blood on her right shin(脛部) - something sharp on the wheelchair had cut her shin open.I didn't know what to do.I sat down and put my head between my knees because I thought I was going to faint(暈倒).Luckily, somebody took control of the situation. That person was Robert Downey Jr.
He ordered someone to call an ambulance, another to bring a glass of water, and another to fetch a blanket. He took off his gorgeous jacket, rolled up his sleeves and grabbed hold of my grandmother's leg. Then he tied the jacket around her wound.I watched its cream color turn red with her blood. He told her not to worry and that everything would be all right. He knew how to speak to her to distract jye.air.He held on to her calf, and told her how attractive her legs were. She said to him,to my embarrassment, "My granddaughter tells me you're a famous actor, but I've never heard of you."
He stayed with my grandmother until the ambulance came.He waved to her as the ambulance was leaving. "Don't forget to call me,Silvia," he said, "We'll do lunch." He was a movie star, after all.
Believe it or not,I hurried into the ambulance without a word.I was too embarrassed and was too shy to thank him.
Fifteen years after that garden party, ten years after my grandmother had died,I saw him in a restaurant.I grew up in Los Angeles, where celebrity sightings are common and where I was raised to respect people's privacy and never to bother someone while they're out having a meal. But on this day,I decided to put all that away and abandon (拋棄) my own shyness.I went to his table.
I said, "I don't have any idea if you remember this ...," and I told him the story. He remembered.
"I just wanted to thank you," I said, "and I wanted to tell you that it was simply the kindest act I'd ever witnessed."
He stood up,took both of my hands in his and looked into my eyes. "You have no idea how much I needed to hear that today," he said.
