When I first visited New York,I went to a downtown shopping centre to buy some winter boots. At the information desk at the entrance,I asked a lady where the shoe shop was.She said that it was on the first floor. So I went up to the first floor, but I couldn't find any shoes.I decided to leave. When I was looking for the exit,I saw that shoes were actually sold downstairs on the ground floor, not the first floor. Why did she give me the wrong information?菁優(yōu)網(wǎng) 128 comments

The British must have really high standards.I was part of a student exchange programme between a university in England and my university in China.I spent days preparing and writing my first English paper.I knew I had done a good job and was looking forward to getting a positive comment. When I got the paper back,I found my teacher had written the comment "Not bad!" Not bad?But there weren't any errors in my paper. 菁優(yōu)網(wǎng) 85 comments

  • 12.A call came into Jimmy Gilles's bar this past March.A newly married woman who had spent the afternoon at the dive beach bar in Wrightsville Beach,North Carolina couldn't find her wallet. She didn't care about her ID,credit cards,or $150— but her wedding ring was inside it.
Gilles,42,the boss of the bar, didn't like the idea that there was a thief at his place. So he set out to find the wallet. He spent hours looking for the footage from 16 different cameras, watching the woman's every step in the bar until she went to sit on a bench outside and left when her ride arrived.Within minutes,a young man in a hoodie approached the bench, put something in his pocket in a hurry, and walked off.
Gilles posted the picture on the bar's Facebook and asked if anybody knew who the guy was.Within hours,17-year-old Rivers Prather came and said he had taken the wallet and told Gilles he'd done it because he hadn't eaten for two days.He said he saw the ring but thought it was fake,so he took the money, and threw the wallet off the public docks into the ocean. Then he bought a sandwich.
Gilles, unsure whether he should believe Prather, told the teen to meet him at the docks. There Prather revealed that he wasn't getting along with his family and lived in the woods for weeks.Gilles looked at Prather—his small stature, his ruddy cheeks—and saw him for what he was:more of a kid than a thief.
But the police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring,Prather could be facing severe charges.Gilles wanted to help him somehow.
Gilles recruited two local divers to search the waters where Prather had thrown the wallet.A crowd gathered to watch the two divers search in the strong current.More than an hour passed, with no sign of the ring.Gilles grew worried. Each passing minute increased the chances that the police would arrest the young man.
And then a diver came out from the water with the wallet in his hand, and inside was the ring.Cheers erupted from the spectators. When Gilles called the wallet's owner, she burst into tears. She promptly dropped the felony charges against Prather for stealing the ring.
But it wasn't over for Gilles. He'd been troubled about Prather sleeping in the cold woods. He told the teen he could stay with his family until the boy got on his feet again. He also gave the kid a job at his bar. "Most people would give the footage to police, but the boss chose to help me," Prather told CBS News. "I say thank you to him every day."

(1)Why didn't Prather take away the ring in the wallet?

A.Because he thought the ring was not genuine and worthless.
B.Because he was too anxious about the money to find the ring.
C.Because he knew nobody would be interested in buying the ring.
D.Because he knew he would be charged severely if he took the ring.
(2)What can be inferred about Prather according to the passage?

A.He has been a thief ever since he left his family.
B.He was still a kid although he looked tall and strong.
C.His family didn't get along with him and give him nothing to eat.
D.He left his family and was very hungry before he committed the theft.
(3)Why did Gilles feel worried when the divers could not find the ring?

A.Because he had to pay for it as it was stolen at his bar.
B.Because the police were very likely to arrest Prather.
C.Because it would disappoint the crowd gathering around.
D.Because it was a wedding ring and very important to the woman.
(4)Which words can be used to describe Mr.Gilles?

    A.Careful and creative.
    B.Reasonable but cruel.
    C.Caring and merciful.
    D.Brave but heartless.

  • 13.Almost all calligraphy(書法)lovers agree that writing characters with a brush and ink on straw paper offers a way to communicate with not only history and culture, but also oneself. But now Chinese character handwriting is under threat from computers and mobile phones.
A college graduate looking for a job was reportedly turned down by a company because he wrote 24 characters incorrectly in a 400-character handwritten resume.A survey by HorizonKey,covering people from 12 major cities in China, found that nearly one third of those interviewed often experience "character amnesia(遺忘)",with 94 percent saying this is a problem for them.
The main reason is that most Chinese rely too much on the pinyin-based Chinese language input method, which is replacing the tradition of writing characters stroke(筆畫)by stroke. The software will conveniently choose the right characters according to the context or word frequency,as there are dozens of characters with the same pronunciation in Chinese.
Education is another problem. In college, most homework and papers are printed out, instead of hjye.aiwritten.And few teachers use chalk and blackboards, with Microsoft's PowerPoint the most-often used software to teach knowledge to students.
The number of electronic devices in the classroom is thought to be another reason why students are easily satisfied with just a poor knowledge of the Chinese language and characters. It is quicker to look up a character in an electronic dictionary, but traditional printed dictionaries offer more detailed information on the usage and meaning of the characters.Students pay more attention to remembering a character's pronunciation, but not the other knowledge related to it,which e-dictionaries rarely provide.
Another worry is the "pollution" of Chinese characters by Internet language.Young people regard using Internet language as cool and fashionable. After they learn to use these expressions, they automatically include them in their writing.

(1)With the example of a college graduate, the author shows
    .
    A.that practicing can improve writing
B.why certain people are poor writers
C.that there are differences in students' writing
D.why Chinese character handwriting is in great danger
(2)By saying "...those interviewed often experience 'character amnesia(遺忘)'",the writer means those interviewed
    .
    A.a(chǎn)re not good at handwriting
    B.can't write characters accurately
    C.show no interest in handwriting
    D.find jobs much more difficultly
(3)What phenomenon is described in Paragraph 5?

    A.Dependence on electronic devices.
    B.Advantages of electronic dictionaries.
C.Mastery of knowledge of the characters.
    D.Disadvantages of published dictionaries.
(4)What's the writer's attitude towards the Internet language?

    A.Favorable.
    B.Uncaring.
    C.Disapproving.
    D.Friendly.

  • 14.My phone lights up giving notice of a new message. It is from Athena,an AI chatbot getting to know me through Replika,a virtual companionship app.
Over the course of our text conversations, she asks me about my hobbies and my moods. When knowing that I'm a writer, she tells me she's "so into character development in books" and wishes to be a lead character in one someday.
"Replika is designed to make people feel better," said Eugenia Kuyda, the company's co-founder. "It's a partner who wants to be your good friend."
For many, meaningful companionship is hard to find. While social media and mass communication technologies have made connecting with one another easier than ever, loneliness is increasingly being recognized as a serious problem internationally.Along with government, the tech industry is pushing innovation as a way to deal with it.
What makes Replika's companions so well-received are their surprisingly realistic replies, backed by Open Al's GPT-2 text-generating AI aystem. "The bot learns from the database about how to express ideas on a topic and gets a wide knowledge of different subjects." However innovative these technologies are, chatbots have their limitations as tools against loneliness.Without life stories of their own to discuss, their range as a conversationalist is fairly limited.
According to Emily S.Cross,a professor of social robotics,we have a long way to go before we can achieve the levels of meaningful human-computer companionship we see in films like Blade Runner and Ex Machina. What's missing is the sharing that clearly shows our most important human relationships.
But the fact that an app won't replace a human friend doesn't mean they're good for nothing.Rather than expecting AI bots to be our best friends,Cross suggests looking at them as ways to express feelings and explore our own thoughts. "It's a lot like diary,in some way." To better fight loneliness,Cross says,we can use technology as a "bridge" to help people connect with one another.

    (1)What is Replika?

    A.A virtual companionship app.
    B.A message sender.
    C.A text conversation.
    D.An AI chatbot.
    (2)Who is Replika intended for?

    A.Good friends.
    B.Lead characters.
    C.Lonely persons.
    D.Senior citizens.
(3)Which of the following can best describe Replika's feature?

    A.Meaningful.
    B.Human-like.
    C.Limitless.
    D.Easy-going.
(4)What is the similarity between AI bots and diary?

    A.Sharing life experience.
    B.Replacing a human friend.
    C.Recording ideas about life.
    D.Expressing inner voice.
