Battle the wave
Hong Kong is racing against time to contain its worst-ever COVID-19 outbreak.
For the past few weeks, surging cases have been seen in the region.Hong Kong health authorities reported 58,991 new COVID-19 cases on March 10 and a record 291 deaths in the 24 hours before, reported Xinhua.
The COVID-19 surge is driven primarily by the Omicron variant, reported the ASEAN post. The first local Omicron cases were linked to two Cathay Pacific crew members who broke Hong Kong's COVID-19 rules and tested positive later in December 2021.Then many new cases increased.
Population density (密度) and mass movements during Spring Festival are the main transmission factors for this wave of the pandemic,David Lam,a member of HKSAR's Legislative Council told Xinhua.
Although Hong Kong authorities have reacted since the pandemic began, tracing the potential cases is hard.So is completing the survey, according to Chuang Shuk-kwan,head of the Center for Health Protection. Her department was having trouble connecting with people who may have been exposed to the virus because there's a lack of travel records to trace.
Meanwhile, another key problem is the low vaccination (疫苗接種) rate among the elderly, noted the experts.By March 10,less than 24 percent of those aged 60 and above had two shots, according to data on Hong Kong government's official website.
Currently, residents are banned from public gathering of more than two people and most venues including schools, churches and gyms are all shut.Dining in restaurants is banned from 6 pm and most people are working from home.Strict anti-epidemic measures such as early medical treatment of patients, tight control on borders will continue until mid to late April.
As its health care system is facing great pressure,a new triage (分診) system has been carried out.Treatment priority would be given to the elderly and patients in serious condition, while younger patients with mild symptoms would be asked to stay home in isolation (隔離).The Chinese mainland has also stepped up its assistance to Hong Kong, including sending medical teams and testing supplies, building makeshift (方艙) hospitals and ensuring daily necessities.
(1)What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.Why this wave of the pandemic spread so fast.
B.How this wave of the pandemic came about.
C.The seriousness of this wave of the pandemic.
D.The strictness of Hong Kong's COVID-19 rules.
(2)Why is it hard to trace the potential cases, according to Chuang Shuk-kwan?
A.Authorities were not efficient.
B.Some of them were not in Hong Kong.
C.People's travel information is not recorded.
D.The numbers are large and rising quickly.
(3)What is one of the critical problems Hong Kong authorities are facing?
A.They lack testing supplies.
B.More than 70% of the elderly are not fully vaccinated.
C.Residents refuse to follow the anti-epidemic rules.
D.Chief Executive Carrie Lam has resigned recently.
(4)What can residents in Hong Kong do under the current and anti-epidemic measures?
A.Attend a wedding.
B.Go to school every day.
C.Work out at a gym.
D.Work from home.
(5)Why was a new triage system started?
A.To give priority to children with COVID-19.
B.To reduce the risks of cross infection.
C.To give patients more efficient treatment.
D.To reduce pressure on hospitals.

Do you ever get the feeling that you are being watched?Well, you might be right.
According to a study published in Nature on June 23,astronomers have found that 1,715 stars have had a direct view of Earth since humans have been here.
In order to do this, scientists used a previous method that looked for life on other planets. But instead, they changed the method so it could try to determine what places could see us.
The team looked at 331,312 stars within 326 light-years of Earth, with each light-year equaling 9.4 trillion kilometers.Out of all those stars, only 1,715 of them could see Earth within the last 5,000 years, with an extra 319 stars that will be able to see us in the next 5,000 years.
"When I look up at the sky,it looks a little bit friendlier because it's like, maybe somebody is waving," said Lisa Kaltenegger, director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University,US,and the study's lead writer.
If a planet circling around one of those 1,715 stars is home to advanced life, they could easily see that there is life here because of the oxygen on Earth. If
that
didn't give it away, then the radio waves we have sent out into space would also be an indicator. In fact,human-made radio waves have already traveled through 75 of the closest stars on Kaltenegger's list.
Why haven't we heard from anyone yet, then?
It takes a long time for messages to travel between star systems.By the time a message could be received, that advanced civilization would probably not exist anymore.
Alan Boss,a scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science in the US who wasn't part of the study, wrote in an email that this long time would limit the chances for different life to exchange "emails and TIKTOK videos".
"So we should not expect aliens to show up anytime soon," Boss said.
(1)Why did scientists change the research method?
A.To seek alien life.
B.To count the stars in outer space.
C.To decide what places could view Earth.
D.To measure the stars within light-years of Earth.
(2)How many stars will be able to see us in the next 5,000 years?
A.319.
B.1,715.
C.1,396.
D.2,034
(3)What does the underlined word "that" in paragraph 6 refer to?
A.A planet circling around one of those 1,715 stars.
B.Advanced life.
C.The oxygen on Earth.
D.Human-made radio waves.
(4)What could prevent humans from exchanging messages with aliens according to Boss?
A.Aliens don't exist.
B.It takes a long time for messages to travel.
C.They cannot understand each other.
D.Human-made radio waves cannot travel far.
(5)What is the purpose of the text?
A.To present new findings published in a study.
B.To discuss if there is advanced life on other stars.
C.To raise readers' interest in aliens.
D.To explain how messages travel between different star systems.

根據(jù)段落開頭語續(xù)寫一段,100詞左右,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
Peter,a 5-year-old boy, showed such great interest in sea shells that he would rush to pick them up with his 3-year-old sister,Shirley. They screamed out their joy as Peter collected his treasure into his pockets. For Peter, sea shells lay shining on the peaceful beach, waiting for him, just like stars twinkling (閃爍) in the sky.As waves touched them, they seemed to be flowers blooming (綻放) in gentle wind.
One day,Peter was wandering through market with Shirley, win some shells in his pocket.Suddenly Peter found his younger sister was lagging (落后) behind. He stopped and looked back, finding Shirley was standing in front of a toy shop and was staring at something with great interest. The boy went back to her and asked, "What do you want?" Shirley pointed at the doll, wearing a smile on her innocent face.Peter held his younger sister's tiny hand, walking into the shop.He tiptoed (踮起腳尖) to reach for the doll, and like a responsible elder brother, gave the precious doll to Shirley.Holding tightly the doll, the sister was very very happy.
The shopkeeper was watching everything and getting amused to see the matured (成熟的) behavior of the boy.Now the boy came to the counter and asked the shopkeeper, "How much does this doll cost,Sir?" The shopkeeper was a cool man,who had suffered from something in his life.So he asked the boy with love and affection, "Well, what can you pay?" Peter reached into his clothes for money that was intended for these two little guys' breakfast.Having counted the money,Peter put it carefully on the counter, asking again, "Sir,is it enough for my little sister's doll?" The amusing scene just in front of the shopkeeper eventually brought a smile on his face.Shaking his head slightly,he replied, "My boy,I am afraid it seems not to be enough."
With his eyes fixed on Peter's pocket,he wondered what Peter would do.__________
