  • 2.Anne Hidalgo, the mayor(市長) of Paris,F(xiàn)rance, has a goal. She wants to clean the Seine making the river swimmable by 2024 when the city will host the Olympic Games. It is a big task since it has been illegal to swim in the river for nearly100 years.
Lucky for Hidalgo,11-year-old Raphael is on the case. For almost two years now,Raphael has spent nearly every weekend fishing rubbish out of the river.Working with his dad,it's not unusual for them to catch an entire ton of rubbish in a single day.
The rubbish can include anything. "I always knew there were things at the bottom of the water, but not to the point of bicycles.Honestly,it did shock me,Raphael said. He's also found some more objects out of the way, including a camera, jewelry, and even a knife from the 1800s.He's also shared them on his Instagram account.
In January 2020,Raphael and his dad went to a bridge in Western Paris for their first catch.Raphael said, "At first,it was just a leisurely weekend activity. But once I saw just how much garbage was buried there at the bottom of the river it became like a real job."
Raphael was even awarded the Medal of Paris for his efforts. But he admits that getting people to take action in the fight against pollution has been difficult. There are definitely enough of us wanting to clean up the planet. But when it comes to taking action, hardly anyone does.Even something as simple as picking up cigarette butts and placing them in the trash could make a huge difference.
Still,he said he was proud of his progress in the last two years.A part of the Seine is now noticeably clearer than the rest of the river.Raphael's not sure if he can make the entire Seine clear by the 2024 Olympics. He does hope he'll be one of the first to swim in the water once it is safe.

  • 3.Sodas such as Coke or Pepsi are responsible for adding to health problems like tooth problems and obesity (肥胖).So health leaders have recommended teens cut back on sugar-sweetened sodas. However, their push may have had an unplanned result. Many of the advertisements aimed at teens show fit athletes having sugar-sweetened sports drinks. They make sports drinks look like a healthy choice for teens compared to sodas. As a result, teens are turning to this kind of drink.
Scientists at Harvard University in Massachusetts focused on teens, who are considered more likely than younger kids to buy their drjye.aiks.In 2015,22,000 high school students were surveyed, and almost 6 in 10 of them reported having at least one sports drink in the past week. That was up slightly from 2010.The Harvard study found that almost one-third of teens drank one to three sports drinks in the previous week.Just over 1 in10 reported having four to six drinks.Teens who played on sports teams were likely to have one or more sports drinks each day.Boys were more likely than girls to have the drinks, scientists found.
The same was true for teens who watched more than two hours of television.Scientists say they are concerned because of ties between TV watching, ads, and obesity.Experts say that many children don't need a sports drink that is full of carbohydrates (碳水化合物) and sweeteners. This especially applies to children sitting in front of a TV.The better option is water or unsweetened drinks.
"There is no reason to have carbohydrates in sports drinks unless you are in a high-level game, said Nyree Dardarian, the leader of the Center for Integrated Nutrition and Performance. "Someone on a long bike ride or in an all-day race might want to have one.If children are playing for 20 minutes, they just need water."
There are other choices.Water and oranges would provide all of the recommended amounts of vitamin C for kids.Other ideas include flavoring water by adding fruit to it.Kids can also add a small amount of juice.

(1)What unplanned result may health leaders' recommendation cause?

A.Teenagers are turning to sports drinks instead of sodas.
B.Teenagers are being confused by different ads of drinks.
C.Teenagers are buying more sugar-sweetened sodas.
D.Teenagers are having more health problems.
(2)What is the Harvard study mainly about?

A.Teenagers' favorite kinds of sports drinks.
B.Teenagers' habits of having sports drinks.
C.The influence of sports drink ads on teens.
D.The group with the greatest tendency to drink sports drinks.
(3)What does the underlined word "This" in Paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Playing on sports teams.
    B.Preferring carbohydrates.
    C.Needing no sports drinks.
    D.Suffering from health problems.
(4)What is implied in Nyree's words?

A.Sports drinks are unsuitable for children with light exercise.
B.People should give up sports drinks with carbohydrates.
C.Sports drinks are a better choice for heavy exercisers.
D.Children should do more outdoor exercise.

  • 4.    The meticulousness(一絲不茍) that drives the craftsman's spirit, has made the arts of Japan famous worldwide. But how may this traditional spirit of perfectionism,or kodawari, have wide-ranging influences on everyday life in modern Japan?
Nagasawa Rosetsu was an ancient artist who produced Five Hundred Arhats. He drew the 500 chief followers of the Buddha in a work that measures just 3cm square, roughly the size of a postage stamp. You'll need to take out the magnifying glass(放大鏡) for this one!
Back to modern-day Japan, the most well-known modern Japanese artist is Yayoi Kusama. One of her most representative works is her large-scale spotted pumpkin sculptures.Kusama has also produced many hand-painted works with a level of detail that must have taken weeks,if not months,to complete.Having suffered from a disorder for many decades,Kusama applies herself to painting detailed patterns as a kind of treatment;the repetition involved in creating the work allows her to keep control of her mind.
When did kodawari, this Japanese's seeking of perfection and devotion to detail begin?I suppose it was even as far back as the Heian period, which began over one thousand years ago.In her The Pillow Book, the court lady Sei Shōngon took it upon herself to write lists of objects and situations that she found to be beautiful due to their perfection.
Today there are still many examples of this single-minded devotion to one's work in Japan. You can find shops that only produce a single product, whether it be pickled vegetables, tofu,or Mochi sweets. It's often said that at the best sushi restaurants, apprentice (學徒) chefs will often be tasked for many years with washing and cooking the rice and perfecting this skill before they are even allowed to pick up a knife to begin slicing fish.
This single-minded devotion to one's craft, whether it be in the field of fine art and handicrafts,or at a local sushi restaurant,is surely one of the defining characteristics of Japanese culture today.

(1)What can we learn about Five Hundred Arhats?

A.It could reflect the artist's artistic habits.
B.It may need great craft skills to finish it.
C.It was drawn on a small stamp.
D.It was made with fine details.
(2)Why did Kusama start her hand-painting career?

A.To treat her illness in a peaceful way.
B.To make full use of her talent for art.
C.To live a full life in her spare time.
D.To get instant fame as an artist.
(3)What do the examples in Japan today intend to show?

    A.The uniqueness of Japanese food.
B.The most successful industry in Japan.
C.The exact demands for apprentice chefs.
D.The popularity of craftsman spirit in Japan.
(4)What can be the best title for the text?

A.Who are Japan's famous artists with craftsman spirit?
B.Craftsman spirit:a key part of Japanese culture.
C.Japan's food industry:the past and the present.
D.How are Japan's art works produced?

  • 33.    Minnie lived with her mom in a fancy house with tall glass windows.Though her mom would be able to buy her lots of beautiful things, nobody can"buy"a dad.Although she was surrounded by a life of luxury, that was not all she really wanted.
One day, when Minnie's teacher Mr.Thompson made a surprising announcement in class,Minnie felt very upset.
"Kids, tomorrow is Father's Day!And at school,we're all celebrating it by having breakfast with dads! All of you get to bring your dads or anyone you look up to as your dad to school tomorrow. We'll all sit in one big circle, share funny stories, sing songs, have breakfast together, and have lots of fun!"
"It's the worst idea ever!"Minnie stuck her lip out and crossed her arms.
For the rest of the day,all the kids could talk about was who they were going to bring to the class. Most kids were talking up their fathers:businessmen, policemen, engineers, and even an actor.A few others were bringing their favorite uncles and grandfathers.Everybody had somebody who was a father figure, except for Minnie.By the time school was over,Minnie was exhausted(筋疲力盡的) from avoiding questions from her classmates and was one question away from bursting into tears.
As it turned out, that final question would come from the teacher,Mr.Thompson.He had noticed the light going out in Minnie's eyes ever since the "breakfast with dads"announcement that day.And after school,he spotted the sad little girl sitting alone by the school gate, waiting for her Mom to pick her up."Are you all right,Minnie?"he asked, and the child hugged his legs and cried.
After getting home that evening,Mr.Thompson couldn't shake off the sadness he had seen on Minnie's face and the heartbreaking secret she had told him.Then,Mr.Thompson had an idea.He put out a post on social media, sharing Minnie's story and asking for a dad to volunteer for Minnie and show up to school the next day as her father figure.
    Paragraph 1:
Mr.Thompson hoped some kind man would agree to the unusual request.

    Paragraph 2:
The next day,Minnie went to school down heartedly, not knowing a big surprise was waiting for her.
