  • 2.When we moved into our home in Maui,Hawaii,16 years ago,one good thing about this house was the huge avocado (牛油果) tree growing in the backyard.
This tree gave the most delicious avocados I have ever tasted.I lived on these avocados when nursing my first child.Fresh avocado was the very first food for my kids. This tree was so huge that it cast a massive shadow over our backyard. It was truly our magical tree.
Until one day, someone from the Health Department came to tell us that our avocado tree was too large and needed trimming (修剪).In New York, you get in trouble if you don't clear the snow off your sidewalk. Here,it's when your trees are too high.So along came the trimmer, leaving just the trunk and a few branches.I was sad.The kids were all sad. Some friends who knew it would say, "It's going to grow back.Your next avocados will be crazy!" Yeah, whatever. The tree is gone,so stop doing that.It just didn't work.
But a few days later,I noticed some unusual butterflies flying around the yard. And then, the sun came in the kitchen, creating this pleasant warmth once blocked by the huge tree. After about a month,I started to notice some tiny green shoots coming out of the cut branches, which eventually turned into full-on bright green leaves.
I started to feel like all was going to be fine, kind of like life.Little do we know what seems really difficult is actually life's way of making us stronger. It's life's way of bringing in the butterflies, the sunshine, and the delightful flowers. We all know that saying, "It will be OK in the end.If it's not,it's not the end."

(1)What is mainly conveyed in paragraph 2 about the avocado tree?

    A.Her kids' love for it.
    B.Its fruit's good taste.
    C.Her expectation of it.

    A.To laugh at her.
    B.To cheer her up.
    C.To show their regret.
    D.To express their excitement.
(3)What happened to the avocado tree in the end?

    A.It had no branches.
    B.It blocked the sunshine.
C.It was full of life again.
    D.It bore more avocados.
(4)What message does the author seem to convey in the text?

    A.You harvest what you sow.
B.Luck and Misfortune comes in turn.
C.Success won't come unless you go to it.

  • 3.Scientists have long debated (辯論) the best diet for health. But now some experts believe that it's not just what we eat that's important for good health, but when we eat it.When our diet habit matches the biological clock well, our body can work at its best.Breaking the rule—by eating late meals or having midnight snacks, for example—could lead to weight gain and metabolic (新陳代謝的) trouble.
Many people, however, eat from the time when they wake up until shortly before they go to bed.Studies show that the average person starts with something like milk and coffee shortly after rising and ends with a glass of wine,a late-night meal or a handful of chips, nuts or some other snacks shortly before bed. That habit of eating is against our biological rule.
Scientists have long known that the human body has a master clock in the brain, which controls our sleep-wake cycles in response to bright light exposure (暴露).A couple of decades ago, researchers discovered that there is not just one clock in the body but a collection of them.Every organ has a clock that controls its daily cycle of activities.Studies show that in every organ, thousands of genes (基因) are turned on and turned off at almost the same time every day.
We've lived on this planet for thousands of years, and while many things have changed, there has always been one constant:Every single day the sun rises and at night it falls. We're designed to have 24-hour systems in our body. They exist because, just like our brains need to go to sleep each night to repair and reset themselves, every organ needs to have time to repair and reset itself as well.

(1)What should we do to follow the rule according to Paragraph 1?

    A.Eat a low-fat and low-sugar diet.
    B.Avoid eating too much.
    C.Keep hungry if necessary.
D.Try early meals for the night.
(2)What is described in the second paragraph?

    A.People's unhealthy eating habits.
B.Busy lifestyle of an ordinary person.
    C.Behavior against the biological clock.
D.People's preference for a balanced diet.
(3)What do we know about the clocks in our body?

A.The most useful one is in the brain.
B.They are influenced by what we eat.
C.All the clocks work at the same time.
D.They control the activities of each organ.
(4)What is the best title of the text?

A.Be Careful of What You Eat
B.Choose A Proper Time to Eat
C.Reset the Clocks in Your Body
    D.Select the Best Diet Habit

One of my sisters who had worked abroad for 10 years returned home for her vacation.
All the family members were happy. My parents gave her a simple celebration and prepared food for us to share.
While staying with them, an idea came to me. We could have a family outing on the beach! All of my siblings (兄弟姐妹) agreed! It had been a long time since we went outing last time and it was the chance to do it again. We set off the next day.
The weather was nice and many people were enjoying the seawater. I ran towards the water and felt the coldness of it. My siblings placed our things in a big cottage (村舍). They brought many foods and planned to cook fish and pork meat. Everyone in the cottage was busy preparing for food while the children went to swim. I couldn't swim though I was already a teenager. That was why I just played in the shallow part of the sea.
On the other side of the beach, I saw a small fishing boat. I never tried to ride on it, but while I was looking at it, I was eager to take a ride on the boat. Without a second thought, I went to the boat alone. I paid the fisherman for using his boat and started to push it towards the sea. In my mind, I would not go to the deep part. A few minutes later, I made it float on water and I enjoyed it! I made it move forward and kept it afloat for several minutes. Suddenly, the seawater became disturbing and large waves surrounded me. I couldn't control the boat anymore.
    Paragraph 1:
My boat was pulled towards the deeper part.____________________________________.
    Paragraph 2:
When I came to life, I was lying in hospital._____________________________.
