  • 1.Hi,everyone.
        Traditionally, (1)
the year winds down,it's a time for reflections—to give thanks, reconnect with loved ones, and cherish the more meaningful parts of life, removed from our usual day-to-day distractions.
Of course, the events of 2020 haven't shown a lot of respect for our traditions. In a year of so much tragedy,it can be tough to give thanks when you're doing your best to get by.And far too many of us will have to gather around a table with an empty chair,if we were able to gather together at all.
One thing, though,we can say about 2020 is that it forced us all to cherish what is most important, what's most meaningful in our lives. To stop taking things for granted, (2)
truly matters. To be grateful for what we have, and to be alive to the pain of those (3)
    (fortunate).
Throughout this challenging year,I've been moved, again and again,by the sacrifices so many were willing to make on behalf of ojye.airs.The healthcare professionals who risked their lives to save ours. The workers who have kept our lights on and our shelves stocked, always essential to our economy, but finally (4)
(recognize) for it.The protesters of every race and age who saw injustice in their streets and their institutions and demanded change. And the less heralded leaders, the quiet change-makers who saw need in their own communities and leapt to address it.They checked in on their neighbors, delivered food and PPE to seniors and those experiencing hardship, offered mental health support to those (5)
    (recover) from trauma. (6)
holes this pandemic tore wide in our social fabric, these emerging leaders stepped forward to patch it up.
These are exactly the leaders Michelle and I started our Foundation to support. We always thought they (7)
(lead) us into a bright future,if only we (8)
empower them, connect them with each other, and give them a dose of inspiration when they needed it.
What we learned in 2020 is that these emerging leaders aren't just building a brighter future, they're safeguarding our present. In hard times, they are the ones who've given me solace. It's (9)
sacrifice in which I found hope. And as we begin to close the chapter on a difficult year with encouraging news on the horizon,it's their leadership (10)
will guide us today and tomorrow.
        Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays,everybody.
—Quoted from Barack Obama's Christmas speech in 2020

  • 2.Teaching in Front of a Camera Wageningen University is keen on developing forms of education that reach people all over the world. The basics of the course topics are covered in short films and three-minute to seven-minute presentations (1)
(use) techniques such as animation and voice-over(畫外音).
"The online Master's programmes are quite different from the large scale MOOCs(在線課程)," explains Busstra. In the Master's courses, the short "knowledge clips" dealing with the essential topics (2)
(link) to an assignment directly to help the students actively absorb the knowledge themselves.Teachers can also use them to test (3)
the material has come across well.Busstra says, "The teacher has to think up new ways of working - getting students to make a film clip, for instance, (4)
they present a research setup they have have thought up themselves,or to respond to someone else's idea,or to work on a document in groups." The students also get the chance to post a question while they (5)
(watch) an online film - equivalent of putting your hand up during a lecture.Fellow students and teachers can then answer (6)
question online. "There are a lot of misunderstandings about online education," says Busstra, "one of them being (7)
there is only one-way communication. But people are gradually gaining confidence in jye.ai.It will stay typically Wageningen:small-scale and (8)
(base) on interaction and group work."
        The investment (9)
online learning is paying off in the regular education programme too, according to Busstra.Students in Wageningen can pick up the basics at home through the knowledge clips.During lectures, teachers (10)
then provide more in-depth analysis, talk about their own work and supervise students more personally. "Increasingly,on-campus and online education will no longer be two separate worlds." expects Busstra.

While I was jumping rope,my phone took a fall to the hardwood floor which created multiple cracks on my screen. However, the music kept(1)
,so all as well - or so I thought.
Thirty minutes later,I could see only one-tenth of my screen while the rest was pitch-black.The next morning,I decided not to go to the phone store for 24 hours,I felt a(n)(2)
sense of calm that day, which led to my not going for one week. One week ended up becoming 60 days without my smartphone.
       Here are three(3)
I noticed and why you may want to consider a smartphone detox(戒除期)yourself:
       ? You'll become bored
While in line at a Starbucks,I noticed how every individual had their head down, eyes fixed on their smartphone. With nothing to distract myself with during the waiting period,I became bored, and my mind(4)
    through all sorts of topics.
       Boredom is(5)
something we avoid at all costs. However, boredom is the perfect way to make a(n)(6)
on a business idea or project. When you enter a state of boredom, you allow your mind to relax and escape from the realities of today to the infinite(7)
    of tomorrow.
? You'll be able to dramatically reduce your "work" hours
A study found that adults ages 18 to 33(8)
their smartphones 85 times a day,or once every 10 minutes.
As I learned during my experiment, placing some distance between myself and my device helped me fall into deep work more easily.
By not having my smartphone,my distraction time went down and thus my hours of work were spent more efficiently and effectively. On numerous occasions,I found myself(9)
what to do with the afternoon since I had already completed my high-impact tasks for the day.
? Your mental well-being will receive a boost (提高)
       Obviously,without a cellphone,I experienced a lack of(10)
news and comments. While that helped cause a dramatic boost in my mental well-being,the biggest reason for it was truly connecting to people.

Having a microchip implanted in a man's brain may be common in sci-fi movie plots, but it may soon become an actual possibility.
       Elon Musk - a U.S.jye.ai mogul(大亨),founder of Space X and co-founder of electric car maker Tesla - has been working on this technology.On August 28,Musk gave a live-stream (1)
of the chip, which was implanted into the head of a pig named Gertrude.
       The chip, (2)
by Musk's company Neuralink,is the size of a coin, but don't let its size fool you.The tiny chip has over 3,000 electrodes(電極)attached to (3)
threads which can monitor about 1,000 neurons(神經(jīng)元).It collects neural signals from an area of the brain, and then transmits those signals (4)
to nearby computers, according to MSN.In the live-stream,Gertrude could be seen walking around her pen sniffing the ground while a monitor showed her brain activity.
Though the technology is still in its early stage,it is (5)
for humans. This technology "would solve a lot of brain / spine injuries and is ultimately essential for AI symbiosis(共生)," which allows the human brain to merge(融合)with an artificial intelligence,Musk said in previous interviews.
When the device can be (6)
to humans, its main goal will be to help those who have mobility issues, such as those suffering from paralysis.Musk hopes this technology could also be used to help those with hearing and eyesight issues and one day lead to a cure for epilepsy(癲癇).
       Although such a device could,in (7)
,repair those problems, putting it into practice is by no means a piece of cake.Currently, the device can transmit signals from about 500 neurons in the pig's brain. The number is tiny when (8)
to 80 billion neurons in a human brain. And to cover the whole human brain also means the electrodes have to be much smaller.
Also implanting the chip into the brain poses a(n) (9)
danger. There is a risk of the immune system attacking this foreign body.
Right now,the hope of controlling the brain via controlling a few neurons seems (10)
optimistic. "There are many technological challenges to overcome before Neuralink can use its devices to achieve the corrective purposes it foresees for them," said Yuan Langfeng,an associate professor at the University of Science and Technology of China.
