A human-like robot is helping researchers touch shipwrecks (沉船) up to 1 kilometer under water — without getting wet.
OceanOneK is a 1.5-meter-long robot that has a human-like head and arms, while its thrusters(推進(jìn)器) let it move carefully in the water. Its two camera eyes let a scientist on the surface see with human-like 3 D vision (視覺),while a touch-based system lets the scientist feel what the robot is touching as if (好像) they were holding them in their own hands. This allows OceanOneK to touch ancient tools with the skill and care of a human diver(潛水員).
Even when "deep" diving, human divers usually won't go more than 40 meters down. And while the world record for the deepest dive is just over 332 meters.OceanOneK's body is made with a special material that allows it to withstand(承受) underwater pressure 100 times what human experiences.
The robot has already been able to search several places that would be too deep for human divers. These include a second-century Roman ship at 334 meters, where OceanOneK successfully brought back several 1,800-year-old oil lamps (燈).And the Italian ship Francesco Crispi now sits under 500 meters of water.
Stanford professor Khatib, who used the robot, said,"I'd never experienced anything like that in my life.I'm the one who touched the Francesco Crispi at 500 meters." Khatib hopes OceanOneK can help humans research space in the future too.
