It was probably her giggling(咯咯笑) that drew my attention.English reading really wasn't that funny as far as I knew.
It was early May and I was facing a class of sixteen kids.Though I had almost three years of teaching, this particular sixth grade class had pushed me to the limits of my patience far too many times, and I couldn't wait to wave goodbye to them for the summer.
I had kept away from the ideal of my first year of teaching. That first year I'd covered up the small hole in the window with an inspirational poster.I'd decorated the walls with pictures of famous universities.I told the kids daily that they always had something worth struggling for.Together we would work hard and make something of their lives.
The problem,of course, was that my ideals kept being defeated by reality. Not just the reality of troubled families.I was also faced with the basic reality of the twelve- and thirteen-year-old mind. The universal mind, "You can't make me!"
And now I was faced with a giggle when I should have had only full attention.Walking over to the young peace breaker,I asked for the note she had in her hands.Frozen, she refused to give it to me.I waited, all attention in the room on the quiet battle between teacher and student. When she finally handed it over, saying, "Okay, but I didn't draw it," which showed this wasn't just an ordinary note being passed.
After getting the class going on an English reading test,I finally had a chance to look through it.It was a hand-drawn picture of me,eyes monitoring widely, teeth blackened, and the words "I'm stupid" coming out of my mouth. There was no doubt about who it was supposed to be.
I managed to fold up the picture calmly. My mind, however, was working angrily and wanting to criticize some students on the scene.I figured I knew the two most likely candidates for drawing the picture.Maybe it was high time that I did it!

Paula is a 55-year-old woman living in New Jersey. She lives a happy life without concern for financial or social problems and she constantly shares laughs with her family and friends.About ten years ago,her husband Michael gave her a gold ring with a diamond in it on their 20th wedding anniversary. She cherished it very much and wore it every day.
Having been married for almost 30 years,Paula had everything set for herself, and knew that her life in New Jersey was a thrilling one.One day,Paula was in the bathroom cleaning everything up,from the sink to the floor. She wanted to keep her house clean and beautiful. As soon as Paula finished washing the bathtub, she moved on to the part she feared most:the toilet.Wanting to get it out of the way,she quickly cleaned the inside of the toilet with a brush, and flushed (沖走) the soap away. After finishing, she felt there was something wrong, but she couldn't think of what it was.
Paula's heart skipped a beat when she noticed that her left ring finger felt a bit lighter. She slowly looked down at her ring finger, hoping that her treasured anniversary gift was still on it.She was frightened to see that it was lost. She didn't notice that she flushed it down the toilet.
Paula said, "I must have flushed it down.It had been a little big on my finger, because it was winter time and my hands were smaller.I felt so bad about it.Sad and embarrassed."
She couldn't believe that she just let thousands of dollars go down the drain(下水道),literally. She searched the bathroom and even the house, hoping that she just dropped it somewhere and forgot about it.She even took apart the toilet and searched the inside pipes with a flashlight, but in vain.Paula had no idea how to explain this to her husband. To buy the ring,Michael worked extra hard before the anniversary,so to tell him the bad news was unimaginable for Paula.

I was a shy 13-year-old boy that year, afraid to speak before people and poor at communicating with others. My parents were worried so they introduced a part-time job in a restaurant tome during the summer vacation, hoping it would make a difference to me.Although I hated it and didn't believe it would bring any change to me,I had to accept it.The part-time job fell on Monday of each week.
On the first Monday,I simply dared not look at people in the restaurant. And when I was speaking with them,my face turned red and my voice was low.On my way back home,I felt so bad.But when I reached home,my bad feelings disappeared.I found my parents had brought home a pet cat, which I had expected to get for a long period of time. The cat was so lovely.
However, one Thursday,he secretly ran out and disappeared. We looked for him everywhere the whole day but found nothing. We lived in the city, close to a high-traffic road, and this cat didn't have "street smarts".I guessed he would probably die and wouldn't be home again. And after three days of looking for the cat with no sign of him,I quite believed he wouldn't be home again. My parents told me "A miracle (奇跡) may happen as long as you don't give up." However,I quite doubted it.
O n the morning of the following Monday,I left for work 45 minutes earlier and started walking to the bus stop a block away. While waiting for the bus there,I thought about the work and felt upset. It wouldn't be helpful to me and it was tiring! How much I wanted to quit the job!And thinking of the cat,I felt even worse.
Since it was still early,I suddenly wanted to spare some time to look for the cat again though I had little hope.I told myself, "If I still fail to find him this time,I won't look for him again." Then,I decided to walk to the next bus stop to look for him around.Minutes later, suddenly,a dirty and weak cat sitting by a tree caught my eye.
