Meet the 9-year-old girl,Hana Fatima, whose simple act of kindness has since snowballed into a volunteer project to help seniors and people with disabilities.
It's a lesson born out of an impulse she had while shopping with her father at a Mississauga,Ont.,supermarket in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
About two years ago — two days before Ontario's first lockdown, when toilet paper and uncertainty about life in a global pandemic were on top of mind for so many — Fatima and her father,Tariq Syed, were waiting in the check-out line.Fatima noticed an elderly woman struggling with her shopping. "It made me think of my grandparents," Fatima recalled. So,she pointed the woman out to her father and the two offered to help carry her shopping to her car. It's too common to mention, but the woman's reaction stayed with Fatima.
"She got really happy," Fatima told CBC.When they got home,F(xiàn)atima and her father decided they wanted to help more seniors.Together, they started The Good Neighbor Project,a volunteer delivery network that connects available,able-bodied individuals with people in need.
So far,the group says it has completed more than 9,000 deliveries.More than 6,000 volunteers have offered up over 22,700 hours and helped over 8,600 isolated seniors, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable persons.
Fatima wants to share that lesson with as many people as she can. "All of us,at some time or other, need help.Whether we're giving or receiving help, each one of us has something valuable to bring to this world. That's one of the things that connect us as neighbors. "When I go,somebody has to know it and carry it down to the next generations.I want to be somebody who teaches others about the good," she told CBC News. "You see an opportunity?Somebody needs help?Just go and do it."
