  • 12.Would you BET on the future of this man?He is 53 years old. Most of his adult life has been a losing struggle against debt and misfortune.A war injury has made his left hand stop functioning, and he has often been in prison.Driven by heaven-knows-what motives,he determines to write a book.
The book turns out to be one that has appealed to the world for more than 350 years. That former prisoner was Cervantes, and the book was Don Quixote(《堂吉訶德》).And the story poses an interesting question:why do some people discover new vitality and creativity to the end of their days, while others go to seed long before?
We've all known people whorun out of steam before they reach life's halfway mark.I'm not talking about those who fail to get to the top.We can't all get there.I'm talking about people who have stopped learning on growing because they have adopted the fixed attitudes and opinions that all too often come with passing years.
Most of us,in fact, progressively narrow the variety of our lives. We succeed in our field of specialization and then become trapped in it.Nothing surprises us.We lose our sense of wonder. But,if we are willing to learn, the opportunities are everywhere.
The things we learn in maturity seldom involve information and skills. We learn to bear with the things we can't change. We learn to avoid self-pity.We learn that however much we try to please, some people are never going to love us-an idea that troubles at first but is eventually relaxing.
With high motivation and enthusiasm,we can keep on learning. Then we will know how important it is to have meaning in our life. However,we can achieve meaning only if we have made a commitment to something larger than our own little egos (自我),whether to loved ones,to fellow humans,to work,or to some moral concept.
Many of us equate (視…等同于)"commitment" with such "caring" occupations as teaching and nursing. But doing any ordinary job as well as one can is in itself an admirable commitment.People who work toward such excellence-whether they are driving a truck,or running a store-make the world better just by being the kind of people they are. They've learned life's most valuable lesson.

    B.Waste one's energy taking risks.
    C.Miss the opportunity to succeed.
D.Lose the interest to continue learning.
(3)What could be inferred from Paragraph 4?

A.Those who dare to try often get themselves trapped.
B.Those who tend to think back can hardly go ahead.
C.Opportunity favors those with a curious mind.
D.Opportunity awaits those with a cautious mind.
(4)What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 5?

A.A tough man can tolerate suffering.
B.A wise man can live without self-pity.
C.A man should try to satisfy people around him.
D.A man should learn suitable ways to deal with life.

D.To suggest a way of pursuing excellence in our lifelong career.

  • 13.Many people believe Henry Ford invented the automobile .But Henry Ford did not start to build his first car until 1896.That was eleven years after two Germans developed the world's first automobile. Many people believe Henry Ford invented the production line that moved a car's parts to the worker, instead of making the worker move to the parts. That is not true, either. Many factory owners used methods of this kind before Ford. What Henry Ford did was to use other people's ideas and make them better. And he made the whole factory a moving production line.
In the early days of the automobile, almost every car maker raced his cars.It was the best way of gaining public notice.Henry Ford decided to build a racing car.Ford's most famous race was his first one.It was also the last race in which he drove the car himself.
The race was in 1901,at a field near Detroit. All of the most famous cars had entered, but only two were left:the Winton's and Ford's.The Winton was famous for its speed. Most people thought the race was over before it began.
The Winton took an early lead. But halfway through the race,it began to lose power.Ford started to gain. And near the end of the race,he took the lead.Ford won the race and defeated the Winton. His name appeared in newspapers and he became wellknown all over the United States.Within weeks of the race,Henry Ford formed a new automobile company. In 1903,a doctor in Detroit bought the first car from the company. That sale was the beginning of Henry Ford's dream.Ford said, "I will build a motor car for the great mass of people. It will be large enough for the family, but small enough for one person to operate and care for.It will be built of the best materials. It will be built by the best men to be employed. And it will be built with the simplest plans that modern engineering can produce. It will be so low in price that no man making good money will be unable to own one."
The Model T was a car of that kind.It only cost ﹩850.It was a simple machine that drivers could depend on.Doctors bought the Model T.So did farmers.Even criminals. They considered it the fastest and surest form of transportation.Americans loved the Model T.They wrote stories and songs about it.Thousands of Model T were built in the first few years.

  • 14.One summer day as I was heading to the teaching building I heard someone call my name.I turned around and saw Philip,a counselor (顧問) at our admissions office (招生辦公室),standing with another young man.Philip introduced me to him,Stephen, and reminded me that Stephen would be taking one of my classes.
Stephen looked at me.With a somewhat painful expression,he asked if my class was going to be hard and if he would be able to pass.I introduced all the things that he would be expected to learn. As we talked,I saw Stephen's eyes getting big with fear.
I told him to do all of his assignments, and to hand them in on time.Rather than being overwhelmed (壓倒) by all of the work,I told him the most successful students made a master calendar of all the assignments so they could plan their workload.
As the fall semester went on,I learned more of Stephen's story. It had taken him longer to finish the assignments than most young people.Family members, including his mother, kept reminding him that he was a failure. But he kept at it and didn't take them to heart. He told me that before coming to our college,no one believed he could manage it.
Stephen didn't become an A student.Still,he managed to pass most of his courses by being in class every day, turning in all of his assignments on time and breaking down his studying into bitesized parts.By passing course after course,he began to gain a measure of selfesteem.

C.He was a little stupid and didn't do well in school.
D.He was far from a top student because of his failure.

A.A good beginning is half done.
