  • 1.STRANGERS parties go wild these days. The main idea of them is to never let the people know who their matches are until the last minute. These are some popular practices that are storming the world's youth on this V-day.
       Speed dating
It's exactly what the name implies.Complete with a timer,a whistle and -50 willing singles, speed dating is not the traditional dinner and a movie type of first date.Singles pay US ﹩35 for three minutes with more than two dozen future dates. They ask questions and try to get to know each other. At the sound of a whistle, they do the same thing all over again -- 25 times in all.
       Lock and key party
Women are given a lock and men are given a key, upon arriving at the party. Each key and lock has several matches. One can hunt for his/her later-to-be sweetheart in various groups, and try out the key or lock. Each time a lock and key match the pair are entered into a ballot (票數(shù)) for top prizes!
       Dinner in the dark
Waiters wearing night vision glasses guide the guests through the pitch-black dining room. They are seated at the table and familiarized with the wine glass and plate.Food is handled with the fingers.People will not see the food they are eating or the guests at their table until the dessert course. At that moment, dining partners will appear.
       Message party
Have A Cocktail,Leave A Message! When you arrive, you get a tag with a number and a pad of post-it notes. If you see someone you like, write a message on the message board. But wait…You've got a message…Go and collect it!You can make new friends and win lots of gifts. The more messages you leave on the bulletin board, the more chances you have of winning prizes.

  • 2."In only six days I lost seven pounds of weight."
"Two full inches in the first three days!"
These are the kinds of statements used in magazine, newspaper, radio and television ads, promising new shapes and new looks to those who buy the medicine or the device of such products say they can shape the legs, slim the face, smooth wrinkles,or in some other way to beauty or desirability.
Often such products are nothing more than money-making things for their promoter. The results they produce are questionable, and some are dangerous to health.
To understand how these products can be legally promoted to the public,it is necessary to understand something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug,F(xiàn)DA (Food Drug Administration) can require proof under the Food,Drug, and Cosmetic Act that it is safe and effective before it is put on the market. But if the product is a device,F(xiàn)DA has no authority to require premarketing proof of safety or effectiveness. If a product already on the market is a danger to health,F(xiàn)DA can request the producer or distributor to remove it from the market voluntarily,or it can take legal action, including seizure of the product.
One notable case a few years ago involved an electrical device called the Relaxacisor, which had been sold for reducing the waistline. The Relaxacisor produced electrical shocks to the body through contact pads.FDA took legal action against the distributor to stop the sale of the device on the grounds that it was dangerous to health and life.
Obviously, most of the devices on the market have never been the subject of court proceedings, and new devices appear continually. Before buying,it is up to the consumer to judge the safety or effectiveness of such items.

(1)It can be inferred that ads mentioned in the text are
    .
    A.objective
    B.costly
    C.unreliable
    D.illegal
(2)We can learn from the passage that
    .
A.the court is in charge of removing dangerous product
B.new products are more likely to be questionable
C.the production of a device must be approved by FDA
D.the promoters usually just care about profits
(3)FDA can ask for the proof of safety and effectiveness of a product
    .
    A.if it is a drug
    B.if it is a device
    C.if its consumers make complaints
D.if its distributors challenge FDA's authority

  • 3.Where do most writers get their ideas? For Yoshiko Uchida,it all began with Brownie,a five-month-old puppy. So excited was Yoshiko by Brownie's arrival that she started keeping a journal, writing about all the wonderful things Brownie did and the progress he made.
Soon she was writing about other memorable events in her life, too, like the day her family got their first refrigerator. She also began writing stories, thanks to one of her teachers.Yoshiko wrote stories about animal characters such as Jimmy Chipmunk and Willie the Squirrel. She kept on writing, sharing the kitchen table with her mother, who wrote poems on scraps of paper and the backs of envelopes.
Yoshiko grew up in the 1930s in Berkeley,California. Her parents, both of whom had been born in Japan, provided a loving and happy home for Yoshiko and her sister. They also provided a stream of visitors to their home who later found their way into Yoshiko's stories. One visitor who later appeared in several of Yoshiko's stories was the bad-tempered Mr.Toga, who lived above the church that her family attended.Mr.Toga would scold anyone who displeased him.The children all feared him and loved to tell stories about how mean he was and how his false teeth rattled (咯咯響) when he talked.
Yoshiko also included in her stories some of the places she visited and the experiences she had.One of her favorite places was a farm her parents took her to one summer. The owners of the farm, showed Yoshiko and her sister how to pump water from the well and how to gather eggs in the henhouse. They fed the mules that later pulled a wagon loaded with hay while Yoshiko and the others rode in the back, staring up at the stars shining in the night sky.Yoshiko, who lived in the city, had never seen such a sight. As Yoshiko gazed up at the stars, she was filled with hope and excitement about her life. The images of that hayride stayed with her long after the summer visit ended, and she used them in several of her stories.
The experiences Yoshiko had and the parade of people who marched through her young life became a part of the world she created in over twenty books for young people, such as The Best Bad Thing and A Jar of Dreams.Because of such books,we can all share just a little bit of the world and the times in which this great writer grew up.

(1)The author tells about Mr.Toga's false teeth in Paragraph 3 in order to

A.show health care was not good enough in Berkeley during the 1930s
B.provide an interesting detail in Yoshiko's life and stories
C.show Yoshiko's young life was difficult and frightening
D.tell about a beloved relative who helped Yoshiko learn how to write

    B.Yoshiko met many people.
C.Yoshiko liked to go for long walks with others.
D.Yoshiko preferred to talk to her pets instead of to people.
(4)What is the main idea of this story?

B.Writers like Yoshiko Uchida must communicate with as many writers as possible.
C.Those who move to the United States often miss their homelands for many years.
D.Writers like Yoshiko Uchida look to the richness of their lives for material.

  • 4.They can be seen more frequently than ever before on college campuses, wearing flannel (法蘭絨)and thick-framed glasses while listening to the music produced by small independent company. One might find them playing unusual musical instruments, shopping at second-hand stores or expressing themselves in other unique ways.
They call themselves hipsters.Being "hip",used to mean following the latest fashion. But gradually the word has become a sign of "being cool, unique and unusual".
Hipsters value independent thinking, progressive politics,an appreciation of creativity and intelligence.Hipsters take pains and pride in not being mainstream. However, their culture has become quite trendy. This irony is central to their culture and offers an interesting conflict.
"I do take things in the mainstream with a positive attitude",says Ben Poison,a college student at Brown University. But I sometimes also question what determines popularity, especially regarding music." Poison represents many hipsters.
When less-known bands become popular they often lose their former fan base in exchange for a new one. There is a famous hipster saying that goes: "I used to like that band before it got popular".Poison quoted.
According to Poison, bands' music changes when they go mainstream. They become "less experimental, doing things just to save popularity and fans. The original elements that we were drawn to slowly disappear for the sake of popularity."
Many young adults have started to view hipsters' outlook as cool and they are adopting hipsters' anti-mainstream culture mind to themselves. This has led to specialized brands, stores and music for the hipster consumers. But on the other hand, some such stores, including clothing labels Urban Outfitters and American Apparel, have gained mainstream popularity. This has seemingly made the anti-mainstream culture become weaker.
"A lot of people that are self-defined hipsters aren't really hipsters, they're just trying to act as hipsters to seem cooler," says Amanda Leopold,a college student from Oberlin College,US.Although Leopold has many unusual tastes and seems quite individualist, she refuses to classify herself as a hipster.

(1)In the passage, hipsters refers to people
    .
A.who are fans of a particular music
    B.who study in different colleges
    C.who appear cool and unusual
    D.who try to attract others
    (2)According to the author,
    .
A.hipsters are the pioneers of the mainstream
B.hipsters are unhappy with the mainstream
C.hipsters' culture exists mainly in music field
D.Hipsters' culture can also become popular
(3)What is the main idea of the 7th paragraph?

A.Urban Outfitters and American Apparel are famous clothing labels.
B.Hipster consumers have more specialized brands, stores and music.
C.Anti-mainstream culture can become mainstream popularity.
D.The culture of hipsters is becoming more and more terrible.
    (4)When describing hipsters,the author speaks
    .
    A.in an ironic voice
    B.in an objective voice
    C.in an angry voice
    D.in a funny voice

  • 5.Most people would never even consider quitting without having another job lined up,and even fewer would recommend it.(1)
And someone dear to me is also going to qujye.ai.It's definitely not a solution for everyone and a lot of people are just able to figure out their path in life while employed full time. But it is an option and one that requires a lot of strength, determination, and preparation from a financial, emotional and mental standpoint.
Three things you must have before becoming deliberately unemployed:
1.A solid support system.Surround yourself with people who will encourage you and accept your decision even if they don't agree with it 100 percent. It's important that they should be honest with you but not in a trying-to-scare-you kind of way.(2)

3.Confidence.You need to know -- and I mean, really, really believe -- that you're going to make great achievements.Chances are that you will experience emotional ups and downs once you're deliberately unemployed.(4)
