  • 2.I can't miss the little old lady with her kerchief(方頭巾)on her head,a black umbrella blowing all over.I can tell she is freezing. She is standing at a bus stop, and I'm driving by,late for my early morning shift(輪班).I decide to stop and offer her a ride.
Of course, she declines, but when I ask again and insist, finally, she gets in the car.I take her to her destination, and by the time she gets out of my car,she is smiling and thanks me.
I was late for work that day,but I was so glad that I stopped. That was 40 years ago,and the beginning of a new habit, one that continues when I'm out driving in bad weather.
If there's someone at a bus stop, especially if it's an elderly person waiting at off hours and in bad weather,I will pull over and ask if they need a ride.
Once,a young doctor jumped in.She had finished a long shift and had been waiting and waiting at the bus stop. She had no hesitation and,for the first time,I was able to help someone who performs miracles(奇跡)on a daily basis. That felt good.
But the best part of my ride offers is the conversation.I do tend to ask a lot of questions:where are you from, where are you going, family, background, pets and whatever else comes to mind.Surprisingly, everyone wants to chat.We are usually laughing by the time the ride is over."What a shame!"I often think when they hop out,as the stories were just getting started. Now as retirement(退休)approaches,I believe I have found my calling.I will be happy to join a community driving program to take people to one appointment or another ---or perhaps just to the coffee shop to sit and listen for an hour.
As the years pass, perhaps I will be the one standing at the bus stop.Perhaps there will be some body who rolls down a window and offers me a seat for a little ride.I will continue to take that leap of faith in the kindness of strangers.

(1)What are the first three paragraphs mainly about?

A.How the author started offering rides.
B.The value of the author's actions.
C.An old lady who impressed the author.
D.An accident that happened 40 years ago.

A.Helping people who contribute to society.
    B.People-accepting her offer without hesitation.
    C.Chatting with her passengers.
    D.Making friends with her passengers.
(3)What does the author plan to do?

A.Become a taxi driver after retirement.
B.Continue driving people to their destinations.
C.Wait to be offered a ride at a bus stop.
D.Share her stories with more people.
(4)What message does the author want to convey?

A.Elderly people need more care and support.
B.It is important to find a purpose in life.
C.Offering rides to strangers involves risks.
D.Believing in the kindness of strangers.

  • 3.Facebook parent company Meta recently showed how the artificial intelligence(AI)-powered tool can translate between English and the Hokkien language. Its project required different, unusual development methods. That is because Hokkien is mainly a spoken language .It does not have a widely used written form.
Generally, developers of translation systems train AI models on very large amounts of written text inthe target languages. This arms the system with many different language examples and combinations in an effort to produce the most correct results.
In general,AI-powered translation systems have improved greatly in recent years. It is now easier than ever to get translation help online or on devices to make international communication better. But one problem with such systems is that there are delays linked to the translation process. For example, when the system records spoken speech, the words are first converted into text and then translated by an AI system. Then, the translated words are converted back into speech so they can be heard.
The unusual part of the Meta project is that the development team did not have large amounts of Hokkien language text to feed into the AI system.
Hokkien is a dialect of Chinese. It is spoken by millions of people in Fujian Province and Taiwan.Additionally,it is also widely spoken in some areas in Malaysia,Singapore and the Philippines.Generally, families passed down the language throughout the generations.
Meta said it used several different methods to create the new system to translate to and from Hokkien and English. The team trained its AI models on written text examples from another version of Chinese,Mandarin, which is similar to Hokkien. In addition,Méta developers used an encoding tool designed to compare spoken Hokkien to similar English text. The team also worked closely with Hokkien speakers to make sure the results were correct.
The company said, however, that its Hokkien translation model is still a work in progress. It noted that the system is only able to translate one full sentence at a time at the moment.

(1)What makes Meta's project of translating Hokkien unusual ?

A.The lack of its written form.
    B.The special Chinese writing system.
    C.The limited speakers of Hokkien.
D.The complex language examples and combinations.
(2)What does the underlined word"converted"in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Transformed.
    B.Guided.
    C.Sorted.
    D.Returned.
(3)What do AI-powered translation systems fail to do now?

A.Get everyone to have access to online translation.
    B.Use devices to communicate internationally.
C.Provide a real time translation at any place.
D.Produce the most correct translation results.
(4)What is the main idea of the sixth paragraph?

A.How Mandarin is similar to Hokkien.
    B.How Hokkien speakers speak Hokkien.
C.How English text is translated into Hokkien.
D.How Meta's translation system translates Hokkien.

  • 4.Satellites are already in use for so many purposes today---from weather forecasting to communications,GPS,and more.Since the late 1970s,satellites have also been used to monitor changes in the Arctic sea ice.Data suggests that sea ice is thinning over time due to climate change.Over the last forty years, the extent of Arctic ice cover has been declining at a rate of 13%per decade. However, existing ways of measurement do not provide a clear and continuous picture of the state of sea ice.
This September, scientists developed a new method that combines computer modeling and satellite data to predict ice thickness all year round.Over the years, scientists have proposed several methods to measure ice thickness. These include flying planes over the Arctic Ocean or collecting field measurements.
Neither of these methods provides a full picture of Arctic melt, making year-long data collection difficult.Continuous data across the entire region from satellites is a great way for scientists to understand how climate change is playing out in the Arctic.
These satellites use special radar or laser-based altimeter instruments.Sea ice thickness is then calculated as the difference between the height of the ice and the top of the water(ice level---sea level). This method works well during the winter months---September to May.
Unfortunately,satellite-based sea ice thickness measurements are inaccurate during the summer months:the time of the year with the greatest melting. This melting creates a pool of liquid water on the surface. As a result, the simple calculation(ice level---sea level)does not work as radar systems are unable to differentiate between ocean water and ice, thus rendering measurements inaccurate.
New research led by Jack Landy,a scientist, seeks to tackle this age-old issue. The team used machine learning and deep learning methods to distinguish between seawater and ice.
The researchers built a model of the radar system's predicted data and cross-referenced these values to those collected by a satellite. This model allows the researchers to obtain accurate,year-round Arctic sea ice thickness data.

(1)Why are satellite-based sea ice thickness measurements not accurate?

A.The ice melts in summer months.
B.The radar system doesn't work in winter.
C.The liquid water turns ice in cold days.
D.The ocean water comes onto the ice surface.
(2)What does the age-old issue refer to?

    A.The changeable climate change.
    B.The incorrect ice measurements.
    C.The constantly flowing ocean water.
D.The great amount of melting ice.
(3)How do the researchers study Arctic sea ice changes in the new research?

A.By using satellites to collect data.
    B.By collecting field measurements.
C.By flying planes over the Arctic Ocean.
D.By using machine learning and deep learning methods.
(4)What is the best title for the passage?

A.A new device to measure ocean water
B.A new stage for the application of satellites
C.A new way to monitor Arctic sea ice changes
D.A new finding about the rising sea level

  • 5.When high school students spend time memorizing and reciting a poem, they develop confidence by engaging deeply with language. Here are my five Cs---things I've observed from several years of teaching students through Poetry Out Loud, from selecting a poem to performing at the state competition.
       Choice.(1)
.Students learn how to search for poems, and they have complete discretion(判斷力)over the poem they will perform.Students often gravitate(被吸引)to poems that fit their reading level and also match a personal interest or philosophy, which is great. But there are also lots of unexpected mismatches that end up stretching students' skills in ways a teacher could not work out.
Concrete learning task.Learning just one poem well gives students a finite and concentrated experience with language.(2)
.I've seen students with all manner of challenges get up and do something they thought was impossible,in large part because it involves a single, repeated exercise.
Continuing learning.Students learn a poem that will likely stay with them for years,if not forever.Poems contain mysteries and complexities that reveal themselves slowly---and sometimes even suddenly---over time.(3)
    .
Confidence.Recitation is the perfect introduction to public speaking skills. All students need to be able to speak effectively in front of others.(4)
.Students learn elements of physical presence, voice, speed, volume, and tone without having to present their own work, which is more intimidating(令人生畏的)for most students.
       (5)
.Students are not asked to memorize much anymore, yet many of them take pleasure in the act of repetition and remembering. They like testing themselves and realizing that they can in fact recall lines. For English language learners, many autistic students, and other exceptional learners, reciting poetry is an especially powerful way to understand language and build confidence. For our kids who need small victories, mastering one poem is a welcome relief.

    A.Practice memorizing poems
    B.Challenging memory and recall
C.This is the heart of the exercise
D.Performing a poem is a bit like acting
E.Any and every student can learn one poem
F.Therefore,it is a lasting course to learn poems
G As a result,it is beneficial for students to learn poems

Every one of us on the bus looked on and laughed crazily.Ryan picked himself up,dusted his jacket and made his way to an empty seat.He tried to laugh with us,but his face was burning with embarrassment. The rest of the morning flew by.I did well in my math test.It wasn't long before the lunch bell rang.I met my friends from the cheerleading team in the dining hall.
When we finished eating,we headed out to the courtyard to practice a cheer we would do at that night's football game. After much practice,we finally managed to do the cheer perfectly. We decided to practice it again one last time.Again, just like the rest of my day so far,the cheer was going great.I raised my leg for one last toe touch.RIIPPP!I felt my jeans was torn down in the middle of my backside.
I froze(僵住了).I had no idea what to do but stand still. Then I heard people burst out laughing and I saw them pointing at my broken jeans.Trying to cover myself with my hands,I tried to laugh too,but I felt tears began to well up in my eyes.
