  • 2.Everyone needs help sometimes.People depend on one another. That's why communities have special people ready to lend a helping hand to anyone who needs it.
For example, what would we do without a community fire station? If a home catches on fire,as the Jackson place did last week,it might be burned down and people get hurt…or worse. We're so lucky to have firemen to come to save people and put out the fire, safely. If the fire station hadn't come so fast, the Jacksons might have lost everything.
And what about our local police who protect our families, our homes and valuable things? The police have helped so many families this past year, especially saving people and pets and protecting our houses and other things after the heavy rains.
Think about all the other service workers we have in this community. We have people who collect waste and rubbish and keep our community sanitary. We have road workers who put up and repair traffic signs and fix holes in the streets to protect not just us,but our cars! And where, would this community be without the teachers in our school and the doctors, and nurses in our community hospitals?
Think again about what we eat every day;think again about what we wear every day.We cannot produce them, but we use them all the time.We get a lot from all these tireless workers who keep our community running. We need these people in the community. We depend on each other.
Let's support each other and help each other.Only in this way can we make our community a better place.

  • 3.How to Succeed in High School
You have been familiar with the learning environment in your middle school, and it feels like home.So it is not always easy to say "bye- bye" to middle school.
After entering high school, you may face some new challenges. The schoolwork may become more difficult and require greater skills. (1)
Teachers and parents may give you a hand.
However, you can't depend on others all the time. What can you do?Here are some suggestions:
       (2)
Do you need silence to focus? Then make sure the TV is not on when you are studying.Provide yourself with a quiet learning environment at home. Some students focus better in the morning;others at night.Find the right time so that your efforts will work well.
       (3)
It might be helpful when you get used to making a to-do-list of all your schoolwork, and checking each item off when it is completed.Try to divide your work. This will create smaller, more manageable tasks out of the larger ones.Big projects seem less difficult if they are done step by step.
       (4)
Read every day -- the more, the better. It doesn't matter what you read.Reading newspapers regularly is a good choice.Newspapers provide plenty of details and background. In addition, information you get from newspapers is usually official and true.
       (5)

  • 菁優(yōu)網(wǎng)4.Shirakawa-go,Japan The villagers who built their farmhouses in the Japanese region of Shirakawa-go in the 11th century weren't thinking about attracting tourists. They just wanted homes big enough to farm silkworms (蠶) and strong enough to handle snow - lots of snow. The roofs of the houses are very steep. This roofing style allows the region's heavy winter snows to slide off rather than build up and cause damage (損壞).It provides enough space above the living area in which silkworms can be raised. It also offers abundant charm, which visitors from around the world now travel to the region to see.
Shirakawa-go and the neighboring Gokayama both became UNESCO World Heritage sites (世界文化遺產(chǎn)) in 1995.According to UNESCO,they are ."outstanding examples of a traditional way of life perfectly adapted to the environment." The most important part of this environment is snow.Indeed, one of the best times to visit is when the snow has changed the area into a winter wonderland.
In order to attract visitors, the region's villagers have organized winter light-up events. On certain Sunday and Monday evenings in January and February, farmhouses are lit up by floodlight. With snow covering the ground, trees and houses, the light reflects on the snow and glows warmly. It's like a scene from a storybook!
These events are so popular that the villages have had to control the number of visitors. Those who want to enjoy a light-up need to buy tickets in advance. The best way to experience the event is to spend the night in a village farmhouse. But room availability is limited, and bookings are made through a lottery system.
Hopeful tourists must apply by August to have any chance of staying at a farmhouse the following winter. The Shirakawa viewpoint, north of the village of Ogimachi, may be the best spot for taking in the memorable snowy event. It's a 15-minute walk from the village center. And the Wada-ke House,a large farmhouse turned museum,is a must-see.
Let Japan's Shirakawa-go tight up your life!

    判斷正誤。正確的用A表示,錯誤的用B表示。
(1)The villagers in Shirakawa-go built the farmhouses to attract tourists.

(2)We can know the roofing style and its use in Para.1.

(3)From the passage we know the best time to visit Shirakawa-go is winter.

(4)If you want to see the winter light-up,you need to go to the Wada-ke House.

(5)We might read the passage in a geography magazine.

  • 5."Just because you can't see something, that doesn't mean it's not there." This old saying is quite meaningful for British sculptor (雕刻家) Willard. The items he creates are so small that most of them fit on the bead of a pin.You can see them clearly only through a microscope (顯微鏡).
Many people want to own his art pieces. He's been honored by the Queen of England for his great art achievements. At every one of his exhibitions, the question is always the same. How does he do it?
The answer is very, very carefully. So carefully,in fact, that he actually slows his breathing down and works in between breaths.Willard usually works under a microscope using special tools that he creates. To paint his works,he uses the hair from a fly as a paintbrush.
Creating these detailed works is a very long and difficult process, and it isn't always enjoyable. "It is a terrible dream when I start but a nice dream when I finish," he says.A single item can take at least several weeks to complete.
People have asked Willard why he chose to do something that needed effort and took time. His interest in creating small things began when he was five.He started creating houses and playgrounds for ants.Willard was not a strong student. He had difficulty in reading and spelling words. Some kids used to call him a loser. This made him feel small,so focusing on little things helped him to feel big.The smaller his work got,the bigger he felt.A newspaper reporter said, "Willard has shown the world that he is special.Though his works are small,he's great."

(1)Are Willard's art pieces big of small in size?

(2)When people visit Willard's exhibitions, what question do they always ask?

(3)What does Willard use to make a paintbrush?

(4)What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 4 refer to?

(5)Why did Willard choose to do something that needed effort and took time?
