  • 2.Once there was a poor lady who lived on a hill near the seashore. Her husband died. She had no children and lived by herself. She was so poor that she had to work hard every day.
But one night as she sat at the table, the lady said to herself, "I wish I could be of some use to the world. Why can't I do good to someone else besides myself?" At last, she came up with an idea.
She decided that she would keep a lighted lamp(燈)at the window for the sailors every night. She found that ships sometimes hit the rocks in the sea, since there was no lighthouse to warn them of the danger at night.Maybe her lamp would warn them when their ships came near the rocks on the coast.
The lady felt glad when the thought came into her mind. She found that,if she worked an hour longer each night, she could make enough money to pay for the oil for the lamp.So she worked late and made money to buy the oil and then she placed the lamp at the window each night. In this way she saved many lives.
She did this for five years without any reward(報(bào)酬),or the hope of reward. However, good deeds are often found out.The sailors whose lives had been saved began to send gifts to her from faraway countries. They sent her tea from China, cloth from India, silk from France and grapes from Spain. But the poor lady did not need these gifts to make her happy. She gave many of them to the poor and the sick.
She was happy with the thought that she was doing something good. So,as long as she lived, she would light her lamp each night and place it at the window.

(1)Why did the ships sometimes break up on the rocks in the sea?

    A.Because there was no lighthouse.
B.Because the ships were not built well enough.
C.Because the sailors didn't have enough experience.
D.Because the rocks were too large to avoid.
(2)What does the underlined part "the thought" mean?

    A.She could save many lives.
B.She would be rewarded by other people.
C.Her lamp would warn the sailors about the rocks.
D.She could work longer to buy the oil for the lamp.
(3)What can we learn from the passage?

    A.No pains,no gains.
    B.Where there is a will,there is a way.
C.Nothing is more important than safety.
D.It is always worth doing something good for others.

  • 3.Both Francesca and Kenny say that they wake up several times during the night to text.Kenny even sleeps with his phone beside his head.Dr.Dowdell says that it's common for teens' sleep to be interrupted (打斷) by texts.Sometimes teens even send texts filled with nonsense words (胡言亂語) when they don't wake up all the way.She has been studying this, which she calls "sleep texting".
Why is sleep texting a problem? "Teenagers need 8,10 or even 11 hours of sleep to really think clearly," reports Dr.Dowdell.If they often lose sleep, she adds, teens may start having trouble in school. They may become angry or sad.
According to Dr.Dowdell, teens need to learn that they can一and should 一 turn off their phones jye.aimetimes.So we decided to have Kenny and Francesca do an experiment:
These were the rules:No phone for 48 hours. No computer or Internet either, unless it was for schoolwork.Would these two teenagers be able to do it?
"I think I'm going to feel really lonely," Kenny worried.Francesca was nervous but brave. "I'm excited about the challenge," she said.I don't know what's going to happen."
Kenny and Francesca handed their phones to their mothers for safekeeping. The challenge was on.
We caught up with Kenny and Francesca after 48 phone-free hours.Kenny sad, "Though life with no phone wasn't easy,it had good things."
Sure,Kenny missed his friends, and he was sad at times. But he also felt relaxed without the constant (不停的) texting.
Francesca had an even happier result when she put away her phone. "I loved it!" she said. "I went to the gym and hung out with friends and played basketball.I had a wonderful experience." She slept better too.

(1)What influence does sleep texting have on teenagers according to Dr.Dowdell?

A.Teenagers will have a bad memory.
B.Teenagers can do badly in studies and experience bad feelings.
C.Teenagers will have no interest in communicating face to face.
D.Teenagers may develop a bad relationship with their parents.

    D.Handing phones to someone else.
(3)How were the two teenagers' reactions (反應(yīng)) to the challenge different?

    B.Kenny felt worried about it,while Francesca didn't.
C.Kenny was glad to accept it,while Francesca wasn't ready for it.
D.Kenny couldn't stand it while Francesca was glad to accept it.
(4)What do the last three paragraphs tell us?

A.The importance of doing the experiment.
B.The problems the two teenagers had during the experiment.
C.How the scientists recorded the changes of the two teenagers.
    D.The result of the experiment.

  • 4.The Internet is an amazing invention.Because of its getting into almost everyone's life, the world will probably never be the same.
People can log onto(登錄)the Internet in search of whatever they need.An elderly woman who is unable to drive can log onto the Internet and shop for goods, and even chat with her grandchildren without leaving the house.Collectors no longer have to go to flea markets or yard sales on weekends to find used things to add to their collections. All they have to do is log onto Ebay and post a bid.Anything can be bought online now.
As a teacher,I have found the Internet is useful in preparing the teaching plans. The Web has many sites created for teachers to share ideas, exchange information, and share documents.Perhaps young people can get the most from using the Internet.Besides, they can also use the Internet for school projects and homework.Being able to express themselves on sites like MySpace and Twitter is another big advantage of using the Internet.
As a saying goes, "Every coin has two sides." I think students sometimes depend too much on the Internet. They don't seem to understand that just being on Google doesn't make it a trusted source.I cannot count the number of times a student has turned in a paper that contains incorrect facts from sites.
What's worse, chat rooms have become the new playground for bad guys. The Internet gives them the anonymity(匿名)they need to draw the attention of children and lead them to improper conversations.Children may also find some sites are improper for them.Even adults can fall prey to(受害)identity theft and stolen passwords(密碼) if they aren't careful about the things they are downloading onto their computers.

(1)What do the examples given in Paragraph 2 show?

A.People spend too much time online.
B.The Internet has made people's life much easier.
C.Many stores will be in trouble because of online shopping.
D.Online shopping has become very popular among old people.
(2)Why does the writer mention her students' paper?

A.To show Google is as good as people expected.
B.To suggest students write their papers independently.
C.To show the Internet also provides wrong facts.
D.To encourage us to use trusted learning materials.
(3)What's the last paragraph mainly about?

A.Chat rooms on the Internet should be closed.
B.There some risks of using the Internet.
C.Parents should cut down on children's online time.
D.People should make their passwords stronger.
(4)What's the writer's purpose of writing the passage?

A.To tell us her purpose of using the Internet.
B.To give some tips on the use of the Internet.
C.To warn students of the importance of safe web surfing.
D.To tell us about the advantages and disadvantages of the Internet.

       (1)
Dr Kimbro, the writer of the book What Makes the Great Great, believes that being great depends on a promise of making dreams come true.We all have a million excuses for why something fails, but only some keep on achieving their goals in life.

       (4)
That was their purpose all along:to help others overcome difficulties. As Martin Luther King said, "Not everybody can be famous, but everybody can be great, because greatness depends on service."
       (5)
That is what separates the weak from the strong.Great people are not just about talking. They actually jump in when the need appears.

A.Practice and you shall get there.
B.When the time comes,be ready to lead.
C.All high achievers make choices, not excuses.
