I got an invitation to take part in an education conference(會(huì)議)at a high school. At lunchtime,I saw a young girl who looked familiar.I knew she had been a student of mine.I tried hard to recall her name, but I couldn't.It really made me sad,as I have always been able to remember fomer students.
Her eyes met mine and she threw her arms around me and said, "Mrs.G,it's me Sarah, and I'm still writing!" All the memories soon came back to my mind. You see,Sarah was never a student in my classroom.Sarah's mother had left her family and her father was absent(缺席的)from her life as well. She was sent to live with foster parents the year I met her.Sarah was angry, often got in trouble and was often in the principal's(校長(zhǎng)的)office.
It was during one of those office visits that I first met her.She was writing in a notebook with a rather angry look on her face.I introduced myself to her and asked her what she was writing about.Sarah shared her story with me.Her writing spoke to me.It filled my heart and I knew it was good for her to put her thoughts on paper.Every morning at school before I started my classes, she would come into my classroom and we would work on her writing skills.

8.(A)"Number the Stars" is a must-read for American high school students. It is a book worth reading for readers of any age.It is a story of love and courage. Here's part of the story.
Papa smiled, "That part is easy.It will be as your mama said:you two will sleep together in your bed,and you may giggle and talk and tell secrets to each other. And if anyone comes..."
Ellen stopped him. "Who might come? Will it be soldiers?Like the ones on the corners?" Annemarie remembered how scared Ellen had looked the day when the soldier had questioned them on the corner.
"I really don't think anyone will. But it never hurts to be prepared. If anyone should come, even soldiers, you two will be sisters. You are together so much.It will be easy for you to pretend that you are sisters."
He rose and walked to the window. He pulled the lace curtain aside and looked down into the street.Outside,it was beginning to grow dark.Soon they would have to draw the black curtains that all Danes(丹麥人)had on their windows;the whole city had to be completely darkened at night. In a nearby tree,a bird was singing;or it was quiet. It was the last night of September.
"Go,now, and get into your nightclothes. It will be a long night."
