But from the second day, neither thought to walk the dog again.I was slow to accept that I would be the one to feed and clean her.As she looked up at the three new humans in her life, she calculated, "The middle-aged woman is the stupidest one."
Quickly, she and I developed something special. She'd look at me with those sad brown eyes of hers, and then wait, trusting I would understand her, which I almost always did.
Even so,part of me continued to hate the walking duty Joe and Becky had promised to carry out.It nearly drove me mad. "Not fair!" I'd loudly remind everyone I knew.
On January 1,2007,Joe's doctor said an unthinkable word—leukemia (白血?。?With that,I spent eight to ten hours a day with him in the hospital, doing anything and everything I could to ease his discomfort.Every part of my life changed;no part of my old life remained.

As months went by,I began to realize that I actually wanted to walk Misty. The walk in the morning before I headed to the hospital was a quiet, peaceful time to clear my head.
After Joe died in 2009,Misty slept on his pillow.
The truth is,after these years,I've come to enjoy my walks with Misty. She reminded me that no matter how hard the present or unpredictable the future, there's almost always some joy in my life.
