  • 1.Here's a list of 4 books that I think are not only helpful but important for today's teenagers. These books contain powerful stories and practical concepts for critical thinking.
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
Eventually, every teen will have to come to terms with suffering and loneliness. This book shows how to approach even the most challenging trials of life.Angelou's memoir of her childhood is heartbreaking, but the strength of her spirit and her optimism and hope help readers make sense of life.Maya shows us that it's possible to develop something inside that can shine brightly, even in the darkest night.
The War of Art by Steven Pressfield
This book highlights.a very uncomfortable truth about life:if you want to create something, you will face many roadblocks.Whether it's naysayers(唱反調(diào)者),self-doubt,or laziness, there are lots of things that will keep us from doing what we long to do.Pressfield helps us easily and clearly identify the enemy of creativity, and outlines a battle plan to defeat this enemy within.
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
This is very nearly the perfect book for teenagers and a classic American novel. The story is told with such goodness(and warmth and humor) that it's nearly universally loved. It is so powerfully written that it can actually achieve something unbelievable in its readers:it can build empathy(共情)for the "other".And if there's one thing teens need in today's world,it's more empathy.
       Essentialism by Greg Mckeown
Do you ever feel busy but not productive?Essentialism shows you how to achieve the pursuit of less. The pursuit of less allows us to regain control of our own choices so we can channel our time, energy, and effort into making the highest possible contribution toward the goals and activities that matter.

  • 2.Some people get more unwilling to take risks as the years go by.Not Gail MacCallum, who at age 40 quit a secure job and left the city she had enjoyed her whole adult life to step into the unknown.
MacCallum spent her formative years in a farmhouse without electricity and enjoyed the freedom of the natural world.During her adult life, she moved through several jobs before finding her calling in book publishing and then magazines. One day she and her partner Ian Connellan were on a holiday on Hobart, enjoying the chance to get close to wildlife, when they ran into some friends, who asked them to dinner. The next day, recalls MacCallum,"They said,'We think you should buy our house.'" With no intention of uprooting their lives she and Connellan thought this was "entirely ridiculous(荒謬的)",yet they got really excited talking about the possibilities such a move might present. "At last,we said,'Let's give it a go.'"
They resigned from their jobs and moved to Hobart. Both of them are brave travelers who had spent time with scientists working in various remote spots around the world. They wondered if they could make a living by helping others to experience those unique places for themselves. Then came the new company Curious Traveler."It works brilliantly.Scientists get helpers and funding.Guests get to see what scientists do and how the world is changing because of it.They leave, excited and inspired." MacCallum says.
In two and a half years, the pair still has to replenish their incomes with some writing and editing, but the business is growing and within five years they hope to be helping fund half a dozen research projects. It is a big task. "Some days we think it would be great to turn it off." MacCallum says,"but when we see the wonder on the face of a person who is experiencing somewhere like the Galapagos for the first time,we know we are living a wonderful life."

(1)What caused MacCallum and Connellan to give up their jobs?

  • 3.When Dr.Dana Suskind began doing cochlear implants (耳蝸移植) at the University of Chicago - a surgical technique that allows once-deaf babies to hear - in her follow-ups with families, she noticed a big difference in how the now-hearing children acquired language.Once they could hear, some children's language skills grew rapidly, while others' languished (停滯不前).Why this was so began to confuse her. What was causing some children to leap ahead in their language skills?
The difference turned out to be the words children heard from their parents and caregivers, millions of them.Baby talk, explaining and describing, asking questions even when they weren't going to get an answer - adults' "using their words" is the thing that some parents and caregivers do thousands of times a day and that builds a baby's brain.
While attending a course on child language development,Suskind heard about the groundbreaking Hart and Risley study on the differences in how parents from different income levels interacted with their children. After painstakingly following around families and recording how often they talked to their children,Hart and Risley found that the children of professional parents heard approximately 11 million words in a year, while children from poor welfare families heard only 3 million.Hart and Risley predicted that,by the time poor children turned 4,they had heard 30 million fewer words than their richer peers.
There was a direct connection between how much parent talk the children had heard and how prepared they were to learn once they arrived at school.Hart and Risley wrote,"With few exceptions, the more parents talked to their children, the faster the children's vocabularies grew and the higher the children's IQ test scores were at age 3 and later."
"The truth is,much of what you see in children born into poverty is analogous to children born deaf," Suskind said. "It's a really important point. The most fundamental science shows that it's really language, and all that comes with it,the brain-building aspect of things, that make a difference," said Suskind.

    (1)What confused Dr.Dana Suskind?

A.Some artificial cochlears failed to function properly.
B.Deaf babies behaved strangely after cochlear surgery.
C.Kids with cochlear implants acquired unusual language skills.
D.Kids with cochlear implants differed greatly in language skills.
(2)What can we infer about professional parents from paragraph 3?

A.They spend more time with their kids out of work.
B.They teach their kids language skills at an earlier age.
C.They use a larger vocabulary talking to their kids.
D.They communicate more frequently with their kids.
(3)Which can best replace the underlined word "analogous" in the last paragraph?

    A.Similar.
    B.Superior.
    C.Contrary.
    D.Attractive.
(4)What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Language development of deaf children
B.Talking to children helps their brain develop
C.Cochlear Implant Project benefits deaf kids
D.The role of parents in their children's IQ tests

第二節(jié)(滿分25分)

  • 9."No 7,Jobie Nymble, takes the lead," cried the announcer. "Just one more hurdle(跨欄)and ..." Cheers broke out. "Jobie Nymble from Riverside Middle School takes first place in the girls' 100-meter hurdles!" The crowd went wild.
"County championships(錦標賽),here we come," screamed Jobie, patting her green track spikes(釘鞋).They were her lucky shoes and she loved them. "Next Saturday,we're taking home the gold," Jobie whispered to her spikes, excitedly retying them.
"Don't forget, guys," said Marisol, one of her teammates. "My birthday party is next Friday at Hidden Park."
Next weekend couldn't come soon enough.Jobie smiled with excitement all week long.At track practice, she leaped over those hurdles faster than she'd ever leaped before. And it wasn't long before everything in her path was a hurdle:flowerpots in her front yard, sidewalk cracks on the way to the bus stop and even her little sister,Teka!
The day of Marisol's party,Jobie put on her favorite outfit:her blue shorts,an old track T-shirt from her dad,and her lucky spikes. "Perfect." She smiled at herself in the mirror.
The party was under way when Jobie arrived at Hidden Park. She stopped by the track first, planning to do some practice.
"Jobie!" Two of Jobie's teammates rushed toward her, breathless and barefoot. "Come on," they yelled. "You have to try the slide."
Jobie looked toward the party area.Suddenly, she saw it.The biggest slide she had ever seen was on the far side of the park.Smiling kids zoomed down the slide at unspeakable speeds.Without thinking twice,Jobie took off her spikes and dashed(猛沖)toward the slide. Its ladder stretched to the sky,but she reached the top in no time, closed her eyes and let go.
Jobie couldn't get enough. She tried again and again. When it was finally time to go home, she unwillingly made her way back to the track where she'd left her shoes.
