  • 2.Fancy Dress High School Many American schools don't have a dress code (規(guī)范).Sometimes students can dress in the wildest ways you could imagine!
I noticed this during my first term as an exchange student at Macon High School in Missouri. One day,I saw all the students at my school were dressed up in strange clothing. The girls were wearing bright-coloured shirts and mini-skirts.The boys were wearing old-fashioned black suits.Later my friends told me that they were dressed up in the fashion of the 1900s.
       "But why?" I asked,surprised.
"Because it's the homecoming week,a time when former(以前的)students of the school come back and meet each other again. There are parties and sports events. The school encourages us to wear 1900s clothes on Monday, pyjamas(睡衣) on Tuesday, orange clothes on Wednesday, clothes inside out on Thursday, and socks that do not match on the last day!Sounds like fun, doesn't it?"
I'd never imagined students wearing anything so crazy at school before. The next day,I plucked up(鼓起) my courage and went to school in blue pyjamas. There was no embarrassment(尷尬) since everyone was in pyjamas, even the teachers! It excited us when we noticed that Mr Lewis, our American history teacher, who always has a straight face and never makes jokes, was wearing pyjamas too!It made class that day such a lot of fun.
The rest of the week was also amazing. But I realised that homecoming week was not just about fun,but a chance to be creative and try out new things.

  • 3."I'm going to fail !"My best friend cried. She and I had this conversation almost every day while we were in high school.
The truth was that my friend never failed in any subjects.I just think that she can't accept failures because she lives her life as a perfectionist (完美主義者).What she fails to understand is that a lot of good can come from failures.
For example, failure can help build relationships.Once was cooking dinner for a friend.I was tired, and several dishes I tried to make turned out bad.I grew more and more upset until my friend told me that I shouldn't worry. She cared more about our friendship than the dishes. That day,I learned that failure doesn't always make people dislike you.In fact, after she said those words to me,I grew closer to her.
Failure can make success ever more exciting.Every few years, there would be an important test in the PE class at our school.Students had to run a mile within eight minutes.I was never good at running,so I failed every time until the third year at school. Then I began working out regularly, and yet I still failed that year.A few days later, however, the teacher gave me and some other students another chance to run and I got a pass finally! You can 't imagine how excited I was after that.I felt the memory of the success was as sweet as honey, because I had to overcome failure to reach it.
Now its clear to see that failure can teach us good lessons. It's not an end—it can be a beginning.

(2)What did the author finally get from a failed cooking?

    A.Bad feelings.
    B.Worries.
    C.A closer friendship.
    D.More experience.
(3)Why did the author feel excited after the running test?

A.Because she could work out regularly.

    (4)The author wrote this passage
    .
A.to show the negative effects of failures
B.to point out her best friends fear of failures

Father's Day was in two weeks.I didn't know what to get Dad.Last year I made him a photo album. This year I wanted to do something different.
At dinner,Dad accidentally dropped his favorite blue tie into his soup bowl. The tie was ruined.I suddenly knew what to get Dad for Father's Day!
"How much does a tie cost?" I asked Mom the next morning.
"Depends," she said." Some can cost twenty dollars.Do you have enough money.Carter?"
        "No, " I said sadly.
When I got to my room to change into my school clothes I noticed a hole in my shirt.
"Mom,I need you to sew(縫補(bǔ))my shirt," I said loudly, rushing out the door to the school bus.
At school I picked at the hole in my shirt.I thought about how I could come up with enough money to buy a tie.I took a deep sigh, and played with the hold some more.As the hole grew in size,an idea sprung into my mind.
After coming home from school,I dug through my closet trying to find other worn clothes.
"Mom! "I yelled down the hall heading towards her.
"Can I cut these clothes up to make Dad a patchwork(拼縫)tie for Father's Day?" I pointed out the holes to Mom.
        "I guess," she said.
"And," I added, "Can you show me how to sew and make tiny stitches(針腳)?"
"Yes,Carter.Let's start now before Dad gets home." Mom said, heading for her sewing supplies.
I followed Moms instructions and started making a patchwork tie.I gently pressed my foot on the foot pedal(縫紉機(jī)腳踏板) .Suddenly, the needle stopped and the machine made a horrible sound. "No!" I said.
        "Try again,Carter," Mom instructed.
I took a deep breath and gently applied the pedal again.Unluckily,I failed again.
