2.Cimabue,the greatest painter of a Middle Ages in Italy, was surprised one day after his lunch break to discover that a fly had seated itself under the nose of a character that he had been working on.He swatted at the fly,but it did not move.He reached out to touch the insect, only to find it was only wet paint.Turning around,he saw that his apprentice(學(xué)徒),Giotto, was laughing.Giotto had painted the fly when Cimabue was away, and it looked so real that Cimabue had been completely fooled.
Giotto di Bondone was born into a poor family in a village.Legend has it that one day, when Cimabue was wandering around the countryside,he spotted a young shepherd boy drawing pictures of his sheep, which were so vivid that Cimabue immediately asked him to come to Florence and learn how to paint. That was how Giotto's story began in Florence, where the young student flourished under Cimabue's instruction and soon surpassed his master in skill.
At that time, people in paintings didn't look real, and the symbolism of art was difficult for viewers to connect with it.Innovation was not stressed,so art had remained the same for hundreds of years.
However,Giotto thought art should be something more connected with people in a more realistic way.His masterpieces included the forty major frescoes(壁畫)for the Arena Chapel.Adopting many techniques that were uncommon then,he painted people the way he saw them, instead of the overly tall and boxy people that other artists painted. He created three-dimensional space by using perspective, something that had not been done since Roman times.
In addition to painting,Giotto wrote poetry and drew architectural plans. When Giotto was in his sixties,he painted the Ognissanti Madonna, another famous work of art.He continued working until the age of seventy. The ideas Giotto brought to painting throughout his life revolutionized the art world and made him one of the greatest painters ever.

3.People who possess high self-esteem are able to commit better and produce a greater bond in relationships with others.Dr.Douglas feels that most people do not value themselves, but with love and self-respect anyone can be above normality and grasp success with the family, the office,or others.
We have become too reliant on intelligence, beauty, and money for our own self-esteem.The loss of esteem reduces the will and ability to set and reach goals. In a series of readings Douglas teaches how to avoid negative statements, how to change them into self-facing behavior, and how to take charge of your mental attitude.Where other motivational and self-help works stop with the theoretical plan for success,Douglas takes everyday examples and puts them into his books. From raising children who believe in themselves to using self-esteem to help bridge the gap in the workplace,he gives readers concrete solutions to the problems that might ruin their interpersonal relations.
Self-esteem building comes from filling your thoughts with positive affirmations (肯定) and learning to react to failures with motivation instead of self-destruction.These lessons are valuable for anyone who feels that life is even slightly out of control.People who feel they have adequate esteem can learn to use it to make their success grander, faster, and more beneficial for others.Douglas approaches this process of self-development as a means of more than creating good things for the individual but also for setting up keys for influencing good things for others.
For more than thirty years,Dr.Douglas has addressed more than two million people on topics from time management to speaking effectively to raising drug-free children. He is the author of fifteen books, including How to Make a Habit of Succeeding.

4.Breakfast may just be the most important meal of the day,but finding time to search for something to eat in the morning can be a real challenge. In fact, you may skip the trouble altogether, especially if you're trying to limit your daily calorie intake. However, the result may be worrying,in more ways than one.
Claire Anspach,RD,explained that eating a balanced breakfast not only starts your metabolism(新陳代謝),but also provides calories your body needs in order to be focused and productive. So,how many calories should you be eating each morning? It depends on a number of factors(因素),including your age and activity level. As for breakfast, "it's hard to say exactly how much one person should eat,but on average,a well-balanced meal should be around 400 to 500 calories, "Anspach said, adding that breakfast is typically one of the biggest meals of the day.
Aminta Bullard,a registered dietitian and weight-loss coach, said something similar like that "calories are not one size fits all".Bullard noted that people who exercise in the morning may need to add 300 calories to their pre- or post-workout breakfast to help fuel the body. The same can be said for professional athletes,as well as those who have jobs that require a lot of walking, standing,or other forms of movement.Whatever your calorie requirements,Bullard recommends choosing a breakfast that contains protein (蛋白質(zhì))and fiber. "High protein and high fiber keep you energized and satisfied, "Bullard said. That's opposed to foods that are high in sugar, like donuts, which she said can leave you "feeling sluggish" and cause you to reach for a snack. So,if you find that you're always desiring a second breakfast, you might want to reevaluate what you're eating for the first.
(1)What's the author's attitude to skipping breakfast?
A.Supportive.
B.Opposed.
C.Casual.
D.Unclear.
(2)Which of the following may Anspach and Bullard both agree with?
A.One should eat as many calories as possible.
B.Age is the decisive factor for the intake of calories.

19.閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
Catherine was the coolest kid in her class.Whenever she went, she was in the spotlight, with a bunch of kids following her and doing everything she did.
Her deskmate,Landy, however, was not in the cool kids' group.Being the tallest kid in her class, she was teased by her classmates, who were always chanting "Landy,Landy, long as spaghetti (意大利面)".Every time Landy heard those silly chants, she could feel her face burst into flames.God knew how she wished the ground to crack and swallow her!
Catherine didn't really like it when the kids chanted "Landy,Landy, long as spaghetti".But she never told them to stop either, and nor did she ever talk to her.She liked being popular.
One weekend,Catherine went over to her grandfather for Thanksgiving. Her grandfather lives on a farm at the opposite end of town, where he keeps chickens. While helping to feed the chickens,Catherine noticed a peculiar one.Curling in the corner,it looked smaller than the others and was almost half-bare!
"What's the matter with it?" She asked her grandfather, with a puzzled frown on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could act. "They have a pecking(啄)order," he explained, wrinkles of concern spreading around his forehead. "If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it.Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies."
"Oh,what a poor little thing!" Catherine let out a sigh as she scooped the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the bony little body.Suddenly, she thought of Landy, the girl being "pecked" by her classmates. "I'm going to take it home and take good care of it," she said with a determined look.
Back in school,Catherine told the cool kids about the chicken. "It's looking healthy," she said proudly. "It's fatter and its feathers are growing.Even the cat likes it.She carries it around the garden,and..." Everyone was entertained by Catherine's story of her lovely chicken, laughter lingering around the classroom.
