  • 2.I grew up in a home with a mother who believes that vaccines (疫苗) cause brain damage, and do not contribute to the health and safety of a society. The only shot I received was for tetanus (破傷風(fēng)) when I was two months old. After that, nothing.
At the beginning of each school year,I was very nervous.Delayed term paper?Mischievous (搗蛋的) behavior?Late for school?None of them.I'd be pulled out of class and brought to the headmaster's office. The school doctor would tell me I hadn't received any of the necessary shots to attend school. But the same thing occurred each time:my mom would free me from the shots and nothing would happen.
After doing a lot of research,I found although people who don't vaccinate their children make up only a relatively small group, they can cause major consequences.People who,for health or age reasons, cannot receive vaccines are at a higher risk of catching a preventable disease.
Eventually,I turned 18.In Ohio, where I live,I had to wait until I became a legal adult to make the decision to receive vaccine shots.A huge factor in taking the step to ensure my health was the message board website Reddit.Last November,I asked Reddit users for advice about what vaccines to ask for and how to go about getting them from a doctor. After my post received more than 1,000 comments,I made an appointment with my family physician.Despite how strongly my mother felt,I went through with it anyway.
I did something every person should do.It wasn't special in any way.Vaccines protect the health and safety of not only yourself but also other people.Vaccination is important because someone could die if you don't get vaccinated. This was the biggest reason I got vaccines despite the opposition.

B.Because he couldn't go to school on time.
C.Because he often forgot to do his term paper.
D.Because he would be called to meet headmaster.
(3)How might the author's mother have felt about his appointment with the family physician?

    A.Grateful.
    B.Annoyed.
    C.Excited.

  • 3.For more than 30 years,Mauro Morandi has been the only resident of a beautiful island the Mediterranean sea.He hoped to make it his life-long home, but that is now under threat.
Morandi now faces eviction(驅(qū)逐)from the Isle of Budelli, off the coast of Sardinia,if he doesn't voluntarily leave.Local authorities are speeding up plans to turn his hut into an environmental observatory.
Morandi arrived on the island by accident while attempting to sail from Italy to Polynesia 31 years ago.He fell in love with the pure water, coral sands and beautiful sunsets, and decided to stay.He took over from the previous caretaker shortly afterward and,at the age of 81,he's still there and ready to fight for his home, whatever it takes.
"I wouldn't know where else to go live—this is my home. All I ask is,if I must be sent away during the reconstruction work, that I can come back after and keep doing what I do each day:guard the pink coral beach, keep tourists at bay,and protect nature.I fear that if I'm gone, the pink coral beach will survive only on postcards from the past,"Morandi says.An online petition(請(qǐng)?jiān)福?has been launched to this end, which in just a few days has gathered more than 2,600 supporters across the world.
The island has changed ownership several times over the last few years.Since 20 Budelli has been owned by La Maddalena's National Park, making Morandi's role a thing of the past. The authorities say they are simply upholding the law."Our priority is to intervene against all illegal construction inside the park, including Morandi's hut.We need to set an example:protect our environment by first restoring this illegal structure, and then move on with a new project which will likely be a scientific center for the spreading of environmental awareness,"La Maddalena's National Park president Fabbrizio Fonnesu says.

(1)Why did Morandi choose to live on Budelli about three decades ago?

A.Because he wanted to save the island.
B.Because he got tired of the noisy city.
C.Because he was attracted by its beauty.
D.Because he was going to be its caretaker.
(2)What worries Morandi at the thought of leaving Budelli?

A.The reconstruction work of the natural park.
B.The possible damage to the environment.
C.The change of the island's ownership.
D.The loss of his hut on the island.
(3)How does Fonnesu look at Morandi's hut?

    A.It is against the law.
B.It is a witness of history.
C.It is dangerous to live in.
D.It is a landmark of Budelli.
(4)Where is the text probably from?

    A.A research paper.
    B.A guidebook.
    C.An autobiography.
    D.A news report.

I always wondered how people would react if I tried to approach a stranger for help in a busy place like a street corner or in a bustling mall.I personally have always hurried past a stranger who tried to catch my attention in a busy place or when I am rushing around.
Yesterday I had a taste of being stuck in such a desperate situation where you only hope of help would have to come from a total stranger.
I was in a busy shopping mall buying a large piece of luggage. After the purchase in one of the large, fancy, expensive shops,I picked up my phone from my pocket to call my driver waiting in the parking lot and my phone was dead.
I then requested the shop assistant who had just sold me the luggage, which was not cheap at all,if she could ring the number of my driver for me.She replied, still all smiles, "I'm sorry Sir,but it is the shop policy that we cannot use mobile phones while working in the shop."
As I was wondering what kind of policy that was,I saw a nice-looking teenage boy coming toward me.Remember my wife's interesting theory that beautiful people are more likely to give you a hand when you're in trouble,I thought I might have a chance. But before I could say a word,he walked past me.It turned out he simply didn't see me.
I waited a bit longer in the mall but it seemed nobody bothered to look at me.Disappointed and tired,I got out of the shop on to the busy street in front.I stood there with people rushing by,looking at their faces to see if there was a sign of kindness on their face.I began wondering how many times I had reacted to strangers like the shop girl and the teenager.
