  • 2.William Kamkwamba lives in Malawi,Africa, where most people have to grow their own food and have no electricity or running water. In 2001,when he was 14 years old, there was a terrible drought(干旱) and most families, including William's,couldn't grow enough food.
Because of the drought,William's family couldn't afford to send him to school anymore. So one day,William went to the library near his home to study. He found a science book called Using Energy, which included instructions for building a windmill(風車).Windmills are good sources of electricity, and they can bring water up from underground.William didn't know much English, and he wasn't able to understand most of the book, but it was full of pictures.Looking at the pictures,William thought he could build a windmill for his family.
When William started building his windmill,a lot of people laughed at him, including his mother. But William saw the photo of the windmill in the book. That meant someone else was able to build it,so he knew he could build it,too. He didn't have the parts and equipment that he saw in the book's pictures. So he looked for parts in junkyards to build his machine.
William changed his design little by little.First, the windmill powered only one light bulb(燈泡).Finally,it powered four lights. Then there was enough electricity for four lights and a radio. No one laughed at William after that, and people in his town started to come to his house to get power for their cell phones.Later,William built a second windmill. This one brought water up from underground. After that,William began to teach other people how to build windmills.
Now he uses his website,movingwindmills.jye.ai,to educate and give hope to people. His main message is this: "To the Africans and the poor who are striving for your dreams…trust yourself and believe.Whatever happens, don't give up."

  • 3.Much information can be conveyed, purely through our eyes,so the expression "eyes also talk" is often heard.
Can you recall any experience that further proves this statement? On a bus you may quickly glance at a stranger, but not make eye contact.jye.ai he senses that he is being stared at,he may feel uncomfortable.
It is the same in daily ljye.aie.If you are started for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down to see if there is anything wrong with you.If nothing goes wrong, you will feel angry about other's staring at you that way.Eyes do convey information, right?
Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive. But things are different when it comes to staring at the opposite sex.If a man looks at a woman for more than ten seconds and refuses to turn away his gaze, his intentions are obvious. That is,he wishes to attract her attention,to make her understand that he is showing affection for her.
However, the normal eye contact for two people engaged in conversation is that the speaker will only look at the listener from time to time,in order to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what the former is speaking,to tell him that he is attentive.
If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking,as if he tries to control you,you will feel uneasy.A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking too long at the victim, since he believes the false ideas that to look straight in the eyes is a sign of honest communication.
In fact, continuous eye contact happens between lovers only, who will enjoy looking at each other tenderly for a long time,to show love that words can't express.
Evidently, eye contact should be done according to the relationship between two people and the specific situation.

(1)What may a person usually do on a bus?

A.Glance at a stranger with eye contact.
B.Use eyes to talk to a stranger politely.
C.Glance at a stranger without eye contact.
D.Talk to a stranger politely after a quick glance.
(2)what does it mean if a man looks at a woman for over ten seconds
    .
    A.He likes her eyes.
    B.He admires her.
    C.He knows her well.
    D.He makes contact with her.
(3)Why is a poor liar easy to be seen through?

A.He thinks that he is honest.
B.He wants to control the victim.
C.He feels uneasy about other's eye contact.
D.He looks straight at the victim for too long a time.
(4)In which section of a newspaper can we find the text?

    A.Environment.
    B.History.
    C.Sport.
    D.Manner.

  • 4.If you were to throw, say,a banana peel out of your car while driving along the motorway, that would be a completely harmless action, due to the fact that it's part of a fruit--right?Actually,no.A banana peel can take up two years to decompose(分解),and with a third of motorists admitting to littering while driving, that's a whole lot of waste banana peels,or much worse. An orange peel and a cigarette butt has a similar biodegrading (生物降解) term to that of a banana, but tin and aluminum (鋁) cans last up to100 years;and plastic bottles last forever,as do glass bottles and plastic bags.
Despite the fact that longer-lasting materials will serve to damage the environment,we can't only measure the severity (嚴重) of a certain type of rubbish by its lifetime. For example, despite having a fairly short biodegrading span, more than 120 tons of cigarette-related litter is thrown in the UK every day.Similarly, our regular littering here and there has caused the UK's mouse population to increase by 60 million. This suddenly isn't so mysterious when you consider that since the 1960s our annual littering has increased by an astonishing 500 percent.
It's not a cheap habit either:UK taxpayers spent £500 million on keeping the streets clean. So,it's not surprising that if caught fly-tipping,you could face a £20,000 fine.Regardless of how severe the punishment might seem, however, among the reported cases only 2,000 were punished out of 825,000,so we still have some way to go in making sure people obey the rules.
To take back our beautiful cities,we need to do more than simply not leaving rubbish where it ought not to be.We need to care more about the world around us.

(1)Which of the following is the easiest to decompose in the passage?

    A.A glass bottle.
    B.A plastic bag.
    C.An aluminum can.
    D.An orange peel.
(2)What can we know from paragraph 2?

A.Annual littering has increased a little in the UK since the 1960s.
B.Shorter-lasting materials will be less harmful to the environment.
C.Cigarette-related littering is a severe environmental problem in the UK.
D.Regular littering has caused the UK's mouse population to reach 60 million.
(3)Which of the following can best describe the UK's punishment on littering?

    A.Every little helps.
    B.More haste,less speed.
    C.No pain,no gain.
    D.A drop in the bucket.
(4)What is the best title of the passage?

    A.Littering,a Surprisingly Big Issue.
    B.Environment Issues,a Big Concern.
    C.Rubbish Collection,an Urgent Task.
    D.Long-lasting Material,a Hidden Danger.
