  • 2.The other day,my parents stopped by and dropped off a birthday gift to me.After the visit I watched my parents walking down my front steps toward their car.My father took my mother by the arm and slowly and carefully helped her step down the small steps, which hit me really hard.It has been happening slowly over the years.Because my own life has been going through so much change (my kids have grown up and moved out over these years),I had somehow simply failed to notice just how much my own parents were aging.
As a child we see our dads as these big strong men who work hard, protect us,and just take care of things. We see our moms as our caretakers who are always there to make sure our needs are attended to so we always know we are loved. All through my growing up they looked the same to me.That is how they have always seemed to me.Now I see a little gray haired mom who is fragile and breakable, and I see a gray haired father who walks a little slower than he once did.
The thought made me break into tears. And I realize I need to spend more time with my parents.I need to make sure I get their advice now on the things I should know for the future so I don't waste my chance to get it while they are still both here with me.I need to ask them to tell me more stories about their own life and all the lessons they have learned.Let's all make an effort to make more time for them and make sure they feel appreciated while we still have them with us.

(1)Why did the author refer to her parents' visit?

B.The author hardly pays a visit to her parents.
C.The author has a poor relationship with her kids.
D.The author felt guilty while watching her parents.
(3)What does the author want to do in the future?

A.To get more attention from her parents.
B.To devote more time to her parents.
C.To listen to her parents' advice carefully.
D.To get a caretaker to attend her parents.
(4)Which is the proper title for the passage?

A.Aging Is Really a Fact We Have to Accept.
B.Learn More from Parents While They Are Clear.
C.Love Your Parents Before They Get Too Old.

  • 3.NOT that long ago,the world wondered whether clean energy could survive without government support. Now the question is how far it can spread. The number of electric vehicles, which was about 1 million in 2015,last year reached 2 million. In electricity generation, too, trend is with the greens. In the first half of this year wind, solar and hydro generated a record 35% of Germany's power.
Greater success is breeding greater ambition.California is proposing to reach 60% renewable energy by 2030.176 countries have clean-energy goals.Hawaii,America's most oil-dependent state, has promised to be 100% renewable by the middle of the century and so have 48 poor countries vulnerable to climate change. This week the number of multinationals making a commitment to running their operations on 100% renewable energy rose to 100.
But not every target is helpful. To see why, consider that goal of 100% renewable energy. It makes solving climate change seem easy.In fact, though wind and solar can generate the whole country's electricity some day, renewables still account for less than 8% of the world's total power output. Moreover, cleaning up electricity is only part of the battle.Even though gas-fired heating and cooking can be at least as big a source of greenhouse-gas emissions, renewable heating gets little attention.Transport policy is unpredictable, too.Carmakers may hit their goal of annual sales of 10 million electric vehicles in a decade, but battery-powered road transport, shipping and aviation are dreams.A much-quoted claim that America could rely on wind, solar and hydro alone for its electricity has recently been bitterly criticized by a group of respected academics.
Most importantly,a 100% renewables target confuses means with ends. The priority for the planet is to stop net emissions(凈排放量)of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide.Putting too much emphasis on wind, solar and other renewables may block off better carbon-reduction paths.New technologies, such as "direct air capture" systems designed to separate carbon dioxide from the air,may in time prove vital.Likewise, greater energy efficiency could reduce emissions by even more than using renewables would.

(1)Why is Germany mentioned in Paragraph 1?

    A.To introduce the topic.
    B.To compare with the USA.
C.To prove the possibility of the 100% renewables target.
D.To provide a successful example of producing clean energy.
(2)What picture is described in the beginning of the passage?

A.A tough fight against climate change.
B.A promising future of clean energy.
C.A huge market of electric vehicles.
    D.A fierce competition between countries.
(3)Why is every target not realistic according to Paragraph 3?

A.Car makers cannot produce enough batteries.
B.Use of traditional energies causes air pollution.
C.Wind and solar energy will never meet the needs of a country.
D.New energy doesn't receive its due attention in every aspect of society.
(4)Which of the following does the writer probably agree with?

A.New energy plays a minor role in reality.
B.Energy efficiency is prior to using renewables.
C.Mixing up means with purposes matters most.
D.The target of 100 renewables is too high to reach.

My Dad's Best Flower I remember my first home was a small apartment on the second floor with a lovely and spacious balcony. When my mom was busy in the kitchen, she let me stay on the balcony watching the kids playing in the street. On that balcony I played sometimes with my elder sister,Maria. She was seven years old and when my mom was absent she was like a mother to me.The balcony was a great hobby place for my father. After his work he used to grow carnations(康乃馨)in flower boxes. His carnations were red, pink and white, and everyone appreciated them for their beauty.
He took care of them with so much love and devotion. He dealt carefully with his flowers like a mother taking care of her baby. Many times I sat on the floor of the balcony for hours observing him and his lovely flowers with patience. He was always doing something on that balcony. He was watering them every day, cleaning the balcony floor, changing the potting soil and when the stems(莖)were thick, strong and high enough,he started his improvement operation like a doctor.
My dad took a tiny knife and with his left hand he held the stem of the carnation and measured the height. Then he made a small mark on the stem with his finger.Afterwards he made a sharp cut with the knife, just enough to fit in a grain of barley(插穗的芽).Then he bandaged the stem with a small bandage. His job was then to water the plants and to take care of them. "No one should touch them",he said to mom.Every day, when he came home from work he went straight to the balcony.
Mom used to tell us:"Do not touch daddy's flowers." For us it was a fascinating experience to watch how the small stems were growing and making flowers. When the carnations had grown big enough,my dad enjoyed watching them every day.We the kids did too.
