  • 4.    Ruth Ginsburg spent her life fighting for women to be treated equally. In doing so,she became an inspiring role model for women and girls around the world.
Her passion for women's rights began when she was young. She started off her adult life having trouble finding a job.Even though she had earned a law degree from Columbia University and was smart and capable of doing the job,she was passed over primarily. She felt she was being treated unfairly,or looked down on,only because she was a woman. She knew this was wrong and wanted to do something about it.But at the time there were no laws in the United States to protect her.
She decided to devote her career to being a lawyer and fighting for equal rights of women. Then, early in her lawyer career, when she was 29 years old,Ms.Ginsburg took a trip to Sweden to perform legal research.
To begin,in Sweden, she saw a female judge hosting a judgment. Then she observed law school classrooms where about 25% of the students were female vs.jye.ai own law school where only about 2% were female.Seeing the progress women had made in Sweden, she was even more sure that America was behind and wrong in its treatment of women. What she saw really focused her on fighting for women in the workplace.
Back in the USA,where laws advocating for women's rights were missing, she decided to help invent laws, write them, and defend them.Ginsburg also became a professor to help other women to become lawyers so that they could do the same thing.
In 1993,after years of practicing and teaching law,she became the second female judge of the Supreme (最高) Court and one of the most respected judges in history. She changed the lives of many women and girls in the United States and beyond.

  • 5.    Buildings,pollution,poor soil, insects, and even car crashes can add to tree loss. However, between 2016 and 2021,the city of Seattle in Washington state was reported to have lost about 255 hectares of tree covering, for which climate change was blamed. Then came the driest summer on Seattle's record books in 2022.The drier conditions and hotter temperatures have left many trees with brown leaves, naked branches, and extreme seeding. These are all signs of tree stress.
According to Nicholas Johnson,a tree expert for Seattle City Parks,if this warming climate continues we are going to have a lot of trees die.Just like people, under the heat trees get weak.
Researchers from France and Australia studied the effect of hotter temperatures and less rain on more than 3,100 trees and plants in 164 cities across 78 countries. They found about half the trees in the cities were experiencing climate conditions beyond their limits. They also found that by 2050 nearly all trees planted in Australian cities will not survive.
It's not the gradual change but these extreme swings of too much water, too little water, too much wind, and terrible storms that are going to cause these rapid changes. In 2005,Hurricane Katrina destroyed about 10 percent of the trees in New Orleans,Louisiana. And in 2021,Hurricane Ida uprooted many new tree plantings.
To settle the problem of tree loss,non-native trees, have been brought to cities for some time.In the city of Bellevue,Washington, experts are growing different kinds of trees specifically for climate change. On city grounds, they are planting baby giant sequoias, just a few centimeters tall. The giant sequoias are not native to the Pacific Northwest area. But the trees can deal with the lack of rain and insects.Once these trees are established, they grow incredibly fast.Having many different kinds and ages of trees is important to keeping urban forests alive.
"Life always finds a way," said Nicholas Johnson. "And in Seattle, people are helping life find a way."

(1)What is the first paragraph mainly about?

    A.Natural reasons for tree loss.
B.The terrible climate in Seattle in recent years.
C.The bad condition of trees in Seattle.
    D.The signs of tree stress.
(2)How do tree experts solve the problem of tree death?

    A.By improving planting methods.
B.By changing the kinds of trees.
    C.By treating trees as babies.
    D.By improving the soil quality.
(3)Which is Nicholas Johnson's attitude to the future of trees in cities?

    A.Cautious
    B.Doubtful
    C.Uninterested
    D.Optimistic

  • 6.Social distancing is not a new concept in the natural world, where infectious diseases are commonplace.Through specialized senses animals can detect certain diseases and change their behavior to avoid getting ill.
In 1966,while studying chimps(猩猩)in a Tanzanian national park, zoologist Jane Goodall observed a chimp named McGregor who had caught a highly infectious virus. His fellow chimps attacked him and threw him out of the troop. In one instance,McGregor approached chimps in a tree.He reached out a hand in greeting, but the others moved away without a backward glance.
"For a full two minutes, old McGregor sat motionless, staring after them," Goodall notes in her 1971 book In the Shadow of Man. "It's really not that different to how some societies react today to such a tragedy."
Not all animals are so aggressive toward their ailing neighbors.Sometimes it's as simple as avoiding those who may infect you.
When Kiesecker,a lead scientist in America, studied American bullfrog in the late 1990s,he found that bullfrogs could not only detect a deadly smell of infection in other bullfrogs, but healthy members actively avoided those that were sick.Bullfrogs rely on chemicals signals to determine who is sick or not.
Caribbean lobsters also shun diseased members of their community, well before they become infectious. It takes about eight weeks for lobsters infected with the deadly virus Panulirus argus mininuceovirus to become dangerous to others.Normally social animals, lobsters begin keeping away from the diseased as early as four weeks after infection - once the lobsters can smell certain chemicals released by sick individuals.
"Overall,it's important to note that, unlike us,animals don't realize if they stay home, they might actually reduce the infection rate," Kiesecker explains. "As humans,we have that abiljye.aiy.It's a big difference."

(1)What can we learn about the chimps from Goodall's observation?

A.They kept a distance from one another.
    B.They became aggressive when infected.
C.The infected avoided contact with others.
D.The infected were forced to leave the group.
(2)What does the underlined word "shun" in Paragraph 6 probably mean?

    A.Avoid.
    B.Cure.
    C.Get rid of.
    D.Get along with.
(3)How are humans different from animals according to Kiesecker?

A.Humans are more sensitive to virus.
B.Humans are less likely to get infected.
C.Humans treat infectious diseases in a wiser way.
D.Humans can detect chemical signals more quickly.
(4)Which might be the best title for the text?

    A.Help Me Out
    B.Leave Me Alone
    C.Stay Away From Us
    D.Stay Home Stay Healthy

選句填空

  • 8.Teenage years are one of the most exciting yet confusing stages in a person's life. You are no longer a child, yet not quite an adult.(1)
One of them is your pastime(娛樂).
Some pastimes have no moral implications. For example, shall we play basketball or soccer?(2)
Some examples include attending a party where there will be alcohol and drugs freely given out, lying to your parents or even skipping school to watch a movie with some friends. How do you respond? Will you follow them?
Wanting to feel part of a group may force you to do things against your better judgement. However,it is okay to say no to anything that is illegal,or potentially causes harm or is hurtful to you or others.(3)
But you do not let that stop you from standing up to peer(同齡人)pressure and being true to yourself. If your friends are true friends, they will respect your decision and not force you to join them.
There are some steps you may take to keep away from negative peer pressure.Firstly, stay away from friends who force you to do things that you know are wrong.Instead, spend more time with friends who share the same value as you.(4)
.And if a situation gets out of hand,do not hesitate to approach an adult you trust for help.
It may not always be easy to resist peer pressure, but do know that you will feel good about yourself later. And even without you realizing it,you may have been a catalyst(催化劑)in your group to bring about a positive change.(5)

A.This is when you form a new habit of making friends.
B.Next,be true to yourself and stick to what you believe in.
C.You are at a time of exploration, trying to find out your preferences.
D.These peers no longer have the ability to develop their own personality.

F.However, there are other choices that need to be made based on your values in life.
G.Others in your group may just follow your lead and gain courage to do the right thing.
