The first time I stepped onto a wrestling mat，I was six，but all my family members like to say I got started in wrestling the day I was born.That's because my dad used to be a wrestling coach and was pretty intense about the sport.He had coached state champions，guys he pushed and pushed to make them get to the top of the victory podium（領(lǐng)獎臺）.Dad stopped coaching when I turned twelve，but he never let go of his own love for the sport.
He never pressured me to win like his former wrestlers had.Maybe Dad saw I lacked their skills or mental toughness.Or maybe he blamed himself for not giving me the genetic talent one needs to be a great athlete.Either way，although he tried not to show it，I could see the hurt in his eyes when I lost.It wasn't that he was disappointed；I think he felt sorry for me.
When I joined the high school team in my second year of senior school，I committed myself and trained year round with Dad leading the way.He and I were together a lot，in the spring，summer，and fall，practicing and improving my technique on the mat.
Things changed，though literally in a heartbeat.
At a practice during the first week of the season in my senior year，I felt my heart flutter（怦怦亂跳）.It stopped，started again，stopped，and then beat too rapidly before returning to a normal rate.Dad took me to the doctor's office，and the examination revealed a heart murmur（雜音）.The worst news，however，was the doctor's suggestion：I had to stop wrestling.
This news shocked and saddened Dad.Nevertheless，when we drove home，Dad repeated what the doctor had said， "Quitting wrestling is the right thing to do，Keith." I saw again the hurt in his eyes as I sat in the passenger seat.The rest of t he way home，we didn't talk at all.
