  • 2.The morning had been a disaster. My tooth was aching, and I'd been in an argument with a friend. Her words still make me feel deeply hurt: "The trouble with you is that you won't put yourself in my place. Can't you see things from my point of view?" I shook my head stubbornly—and felt the ache in my tooth.I'd thought I could hold out till my dentist came back from holiday, but the pain was really unbearable.I started to call the dentists in the phone book, but no one could see me immediately. Finally,at about lunchtime,I got lucky.
"If you come right now," the receptionist said, "the dentist will fit you in."
I took my purse and keys and rushed to my car.But suddenly I began to doubt about the dentist. What kind of dentist would be so eager to treat someone at such short notice? Why wasn't he as busy as the others?
In the dentist's office,I sat down and looked around.I saw nothing but the bare walls and I became even more worried. The assistant noticed my nervousness and placed her warm hand over my ice cold one.
When I told her my fears, she laughed and said, "Don't worry. The dentist is very good."
"How long do I have to wait for him?" I asked impatiently.
"Come on,he is coming.Just lie down and relax. And enjoy the artwork." the assistant said.
       "The artwork?" I was puzzled.
The chair went back.Suddenly I smiled. There was a beautiful picture, right where I could enjoy it:on the ceiling. How considerate the dentist was!At that moment,I began to understand what my friend meant by her words.
       What a relief!

  • 3.The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups.Silences may be thoughtful,or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say.A silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness,or worry.Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable;therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap (間隙)with conversation.Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person's needs.
Many Native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of communicating among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do.Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be implied (暗示) is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before contjye.aiujye.aig.In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection.
Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example,Russian,F(xiàn)rench, and Spanish persons may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic under discussion. However,Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her.In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.
Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing.Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patient's silence is not interrupted too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily.A nurse who understands the healing (治愈) value of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.

(1)What does the author say about silence in conversations?

    A.It implies anger.
    B.It promotes friendship.
    C.It is culture-specific.
    D.It is content-based.
(2)Which of the following people might regard silence as a call for careful thought?

    A.The Chinese.
    B.The French.
    C.The Mexicans.
    D.The Russians.
(3)What does the author advise nurses to do about silence?

A.Let it continue as the patient pleases.
    B.Break it while treating patients.
    C.Evaluate its harm to patients.
D.Make use of its healing effects.
(4)What may be the best title for the text?

    A.Sound and Silence
B.What It Means to Be Silent
    C.Silence to Native Americans
    D.Speech Is Silver;Silence Is Gold

  • 4.Their cheery song brightens many a winter's day.But robins are in danger of wearing themselves out by singing too much.Robins are singing all night — as well as during the day,British-based researchers say.
David Dominoni,of Glasgow University, said that light from street lamps, takeaway signs and homes is affecting the birds' biological clocks, leading to them being wide awake when they should be asleep.
Dr Dominoni, who is putting cameras inside nesting boxes to track sleeping patterns, said lack of sleep could put the birds' health at risk. His study shows that when robins are exposed to light at night in the lab,it leads to some genes being active at the wrong time of day.And the more birds are exposed to light, the more active they are at night.
He told people at a conference, "There have been a couple of studies suggesting they are increasing their song output at night and during the day they are still singing.Singing is a costly behaviour and it takes energy. So by increasing their song output, there might be some costs of energy."
And it is not just robins that are being kept awake by artificial light.Blackorids and seagulls are also being more nocturnal.Dr Dominoni said, "In Glasgow where I live, gulls are a serious problem.I have people coming to me saying 'You are the bird expert. Can you help us kill these gulls?' During the breeding(繁殖)season, between April and June, they are very active at night and very noisy and people can't sleep."
Although Dr Dominoni has only studied light pollution, other research concluded that robins living in noisy cities have started to sing at night to make themselves heard over loud noise.
However, some birds thrive(興旺)in noisy environments.A study from California Polytechnic University found more hummingbirds in areas with heavy industrial machinery. It is thought that they are capitalising on their predators(天敵)fleeing to quieter areas.

(1)According to Dr Dominoni's study, what causes robins to sing so much?

    A.The breeding season
    B.The light in modern life
    C.The dangerous environment
    D.The noise from heavy machinery
(2)What is the researchers' concern over the increase of birds' song output?

    A.The environment might be polluted.
B.The people's hearing might be affected.
C.The industry cost might be increased.
D.The birds' health might be damaged.
(3)What does the underlined word "nocturnal" in Paragraph 5 mean?

    A.Inactive at night.
    B.Active at night.
    C.Active during the day.
    D.Inactive during the day.
(4)Why do some birds thrive in noisy environments?

A.Because there is less light pollution.
B.Because there is more food to eat.
    C.Because there are fewer dangers.
D.Because there are more places to take shelter.

The spot of red was what first caught Randy Heiss's attention on December 16,2018.He was hiking the remote land behind his farm in a small town near the U.S.-Mexico border, and there lying on the grass was a balloon(氣球).He walked toward it with his dog, thinking he should pick it up and throw it away.
That's when he noticed the balloon's string was attached to a piece of paper. "Dayami," it read on one side,in a child's writing.A hand-drawn bow accompanied the word.Heiss flipped the paper over.On the back he saw a numbered list, all in Spanish. His Spanish wasn't very good, but he could see it was a Christmas list!
Heiss was charmed. He suspected that a child had tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid.Nobody had ever returned the letters Heiss had sent, but he wondered whether he could find the girl who had sent this one.
It would be difficult, but Heiss had a few clues.About 20 miles to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales,Mexico, with a population of about a quarter million.Based on the wind direction,he was almost sure that was where it came from.Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is fluent in Spanish and helped him translate the list. They determined that Dayami, probably a girl, had asked for a doll,a dollhouse, doll clothes and art supplies.
Heiss then posted his search about finding Dayami on Facebook, attaching photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl's family.A few days passed with no results;Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19,2018,he decided to send a private Facebook message to Radio Xeny,an AM radio station based in Nogales. To his surprise, someone from the station called him back right away and promised him to post his search on the station's Facebook page immediately.
