  • 3.My son was entering Grade 1.He was a bit nervous because he knew his best friend would not be in his new class.I explained to him that even though his best friend would not be in his class,he would still have some of his old classmates.
On the first day of school when the class list was posted,I was shocked! My son had zero former classmates in his class.None.Not one.
       How could this happen?
I asked my friend who works with the Hamilton-Wentworth-District School Board. She explained, "Many largely populated schools often shuffle(弄混)the kids around each year to encourage new friendships."
If schools are actively trying to place two best friends in different classes simply to shake things up,I think it is a blunder.
I was lucky enough to attend the same primary school all the way through. It was a small class and our group of students moved through each grade together. We felt like brothers and sisters. It was wonderful.
While it may be good to shake things up a bit in the older grades,it seems almost cruel(殘忍的)to separate good friends in the younger grades without good cause.
One mom named Karen says that her son is always starting new grade without any close friends. At first, she thought it was a good idea. Then she realized one thing her son does not have a "best friend," which makes he pretty worried. In fact, she thinks that he does not have any close friends because his classmates are always changing.
Part of school's responsibility is to provide safe and comfortable space for children to learn and grow.If that environment is always changing -causing terrible results-perhaps it is time to rethink this practice.

(1)How did the author bring up the topic?

    A.By telling a story.
    B.By using other people's words.
    C.By making comparison.
    D.By showing research findings.
(2)What does the underlined word "blunder" in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

    A.Cheat.
    B.Strategy.
    C.Mistake.
    D.Failure.
(3)Why did the author mention her own primary school experience?

A.To prove that smaller classes are better.
B.To discuss the importance of good friends.
C.To explain how friendships are developed at school.
D.To show the advantage of having familiar classmates.
(4)What's Karen's attitude toward the practice of her son's school?

    A.She supports it.
    B.She is against it.
    C.She isn't interested in it.

  • 4.David Katz was unhappy about all the plastic(塑料) going into the ocean. To help solve the problem,he had an unusual idea.Mr Katz calls his idea the "Plastic Bank".
In poor countries, people are already working so hard just to get enough food to eat,to find a place to live, and to keep themselves healthy.Spending time on recycling(回收再利用)doesn't make sense when you're simply trying to survive.
The purpose of the Plastic Bank is to use plastic to help these people solve the problems that worry them the most--food,shelter,and health. So Plastic Bank adds a value to plastic waste by paying people to recycle it.
The program began in 2015 in Haiti,a poor island nation that doesn't have strong programs for recycling.Plastic is often simply thrown out and ends up in rivers and the ocean.
The Plastic Bank has opened 30 "markets" in Haiti. At Plastic Bank markets, people can trade the plastic they've collected for money or other things they need. The Plastic Bank markets sell many things that local people need, such as cooking oil and heating oil.The stores also allow plastic collectors to use the money they get to pay for health care or school. For those who have cell phones,Plastic Bank can put the money they get into a special bank account(賬戶)that they can control using an app. This keeps their money safe.
To make sure the plastic gets recycled, the Plastic Bank works with those who agree to use the plastic that is collected. For example, the British company Marks & Spencer and the German company Henkel are both paying more to use recycled plastic from the Plastic Bank in their products. When customers buy these products, which are labeled(標記)"Social Plastic",they know that they are helping people in other parts of he world and keeping plastic out of the ocean.
The Plastic Bank has programs in Haiti, the Philippines, and Brazil. So far,the Plastic Bank has kept about 7 million pounds of plastic out of the ocean.

(1)What might most Haitians think of plastic waste before 2015?

    A.It was harmful.
