  • 2.Having a laugh:How British people joke with each other The BBC celebrated 100 years on Oct 18.To celebrate the day,it brought out a 100-second video clip showing BBC presenters making silly mistakes or forgetting their lines. This is quite typical of British humor.
British people are quite cheeky(厚臉皮的).They like to make fun of themselves and laugh at just about anything. We'll make fun of each other, lightly insulting(冒犯)one another and then laughing about it.For example,if your friend trips over you and says "enjoy your trip?" we call this kind of joking between friends, "banter".
British people love being sarcastic-when you say one thing but mean another.Like if your friend has got a bad haircut and you say, "Wow,that's the best haircut I've ever seen," when you both know it's really bad.Similar to this is the understatement, like saying "it's a bit windy," when there's a huge storm outside.
We also love our awkward situations. The British can be quite awkward people, not knowing what to say in social situations or saying the wrong thing to the wrong people,or just being a bit weird in public.Mr Bean making a fool of himself in front of people is a good example.
Another thing we love doing is being "deadpan".This is when you say funny things with a serious face as if they're not a joke. So,the next time you meet a British person and don't understand their humor, don't worry. It's very understandable.

    (1)What does "banter" mean?

    A.Being cheeky.
    B.Insulting each other.
    C.Making fun of oneself.
    D.Joking in a friendly way.
(2)Which of the following might be an understatement of "I lost a thousand pounds"?

A.I only lost a few pounds.
B.I lost my whole life savings.
C.I won myself a bright future.
D.I came across a huge storm.
(3)Which of the following best describes Mr Bean?

    A.Weird.
    B.Emotional.
    C.Rude.
    D.Sociable.
(4)Which statement does the author probably agree with?

A.British people take things too seriously.
B.British people love making fun of themselves.
C.British humor involves many silly mistakes
D.British humor is easy to understand.

  • 3.From checking social media every minute to being lost in computer games,we tend to overuse technology. "For many people,a moment without your phone or laptop in sight can feel like a lifetime," the Daily Mail commented.
A computer model called Mindy may persuade many people to think twice.A team from the US-based company Toll Free Forwarding built a three-dimensional model to uncover the negative effects technology can have on human bodies in less than 800 years.
"Spending hours looking down at your phone strains your neck and throws your spine off balance," explained Caleb Backe,a health and wellness expert in the US.Then, the muscles in our neck need to spend extra effort to support the head, making our back hunched and neck wide.
"The way we hold our phones can cause pressure in certain points of contact-causing text claw," Nikola Djordjevic,a practicing physician in Serbia told the team.It affects the elbows too, causing pain in the arm.Scientifically,it is called cubital tunnel syndrome. That's why Mindy has a 90-degree elbow, and her hands look like she's always holding a mobile phone.
Some people also commented that human evolution may not work this way. They believe that only features with actual benefits would be kept throughout the years. For example, features that can increase the rate of survival, instead of the negative impact of technology.
However, current human lifestyles still raise concerns.A model called Emma was built by researchers in the UK in 2019 to show how the way people work at their desks could change them in 20 years.
The research team built Emma based on the health issues mentioned by over 3,000 workers in France,Germany and the UK.Emma's back stays bent, and her legs are swollen due to the time people spent in front of computers. With little time spent outdoors and in the sun,her skin is pale, too.

(1)What is the purpose of building the model Mindy?

A.To encourage better use of electric devices.
B.To discourage people from overusing phones.
C.To prove the immediate effects of using phones.
D.To find solutions to overusing phones.
(2)What does the model Mindy look like?

    A.She has bent fingers.
    B.She has a normal elbow.
C.She has dark and healthy skin.
    D.She is hunch-backed and thin-necked.
(3)What is paragraph 5 mainly about?

    A.Negative technological impact.
    B.Beneficial evolution prediction.
    C.Mindy's future appearance.
D.The connection between evolution and technology.
(4)Why does the author mention another model Emma?

    A.To compare the two models.
    B.To promote healthy lifestyles.
    C.To relieve concerns of lifestyles.
    D.To contradict the optimistic opinion.

During the summer break,I became a community volunteer to protecting the environment for one week.On the first day,I got up very earlier to kick off my seven day volunteer trip.As soon as I put on my volunteer clothes,I got straightly to work. While I was walking to the entrance of a residential area,I saw a man throw a cup on the ground.I immediately went to talk to her and said, "Hi,sir.I'm volunteer. Can you throw it into the bin?" To my surprise,he just looked at me,turn around and left, leaving me feeling very embarrassed.
Later on,I had to guide people on how to classify their garbage and put it on the different categories of dustbins. There were some residents which did not have such a strong awareness of garbage classification.Besides,I also handed out leaflets on environmental protection to passer-by.That week's experience was something I would consider it a highlight in my life,as I have helped to serve society as a whole.
