43．Ten years ago，I made a decision.This decision has greatly changed the way I communicate with others，the way I spend my free time and what I research，although I did not know it at the time.
It wasn't long after I got my first smartphone that I began to notice that I couldn't pay attention to my work all the time.I also noticed that smartphones didn't just influence people at work.They competed for our attention when we spent time even with the closest people in our lives.A year after buying my smartphone，I decided that I was going to research whether smartphones influence happiness.
Since then，my partners and I have done a lot of experiments.We've found that friends with their phones on the table while eating enjoyed the experience less than those sharing a meal with their phones put away.In another study，parents asked to be on their phone s while enjoying a science museum with their children found the experience .less meaningful than parents asked to limit （限制） their phone use.
Based on these results，you might think I believe that smartphones are ruining our lives.I've even had friends tell me that they are more self-conscious （自覺的） when they use their phones around me.The truth is that I neither hate my phone no r judge the way others use their phones.
However，I have to say that the research has influenced the way I use my phone.I usually put it on silent，so that I have more control over my attention.In fact，I would argue that my smartphone has improved my happiness.With it in my pocket wherever I go，I can save time when ordering my morning coffee，finding the best restaurant or doing my banking.What's more，without my smartphone，I would not have met my husband.
