  • 6.Deciding to get her money's worth out of the wedding dress on which she spent over $1,000,an Australian woman has been wearing her wedding dress,a year after her wedding.
43-year-old Tammy Hall adopted a new lifestyle-anti-consumerism(反消費(fèi)主義) lifestyle in 2016,after a trip to India opened her eyes to how much we as a society consumed. She decided not to buy any new clothes or footwear for a whole year after she returned home to Adelaide,in Southern Australia, and she managed to make it.
But last year,as her wedding day approached, she faced a dilemma. She wanted to look good on the most important day of her life, but how could she spend a small fortune on the wedding dress she would only wear on that day?
"In the end I decided that if I was going to get a wedding dress,I'd make sure I could get my money's worth," Hall tells PA Real Life.
"The first time I wore it after the wedding was to vote in the Australian election in early 2019," the 43-year-old adds. "Since then,it's been to all sorts of places.Wearing it on a crowded train was especially funny, but I've worn it to do housework,to football games and to the gym."
Hall says that she has gotten some strange looks from people, but no irritatingcomments. It may have something to do with the fact that the dress is not the fanciest, but she believes people are just too reserved to say anything.Anyway, she doesn't really care, because she knows she has to hit the goal she has set and wearing the dress multiple times is the most reasonable way she could think of to make the most of her wedding dress.
Hall now plans to wear her wedding dress on a trip to Iceland that she and her partner will take next summer.

(1)Why did Tammy Hall adopt a new lifestyle?

A.To adapt herself to Indian life.
B.To get prepared for her wedding.
C.To save money for her next trip.
    D.To cut down her consumption.

A.She brought fun to people with it.
B.She wore it repeatedly in daily life.
C.She tried to wear it to earn money.
D.She got it exchanged again and again.
(3)Which of the following best explains the word "irritating" underlined in paragraph 6?

    A.Thrilling.
    B.Amusing.
    C.Annoying.
    D.Confusing.

A.She is determined to turn her ideas into practice.

  • 7.You may ride on your bicycle in a rush to get to school every morning. You may fight to get a bit of space on a bus or on the subway. You may also watch taxis crawl their way through traffic jams.
No matter where you are,all big cities around the world have traffic jams these days.Although they all have their problems, many cities also have a type of transport that has become a cultural icon (文化標(biāo)識(shí)).
In London,to avoid the traffic above ground, people use the "underground",also called the "Tube".The city has the oldest and most complicated underground railway system in the world and it is the pride of many Londoners. With 12 lines and 275 stations across the city, the Tube is normally the quickest and easiest way of getting around London. In London, you are never far from a Tube station.
New York is famous for its Yellow cabs. They serve as a quick and easy way of getting across Manhattan, where the subway doesn't take you everywhere.Stopping a cab is easy, just stick out your arm like what you do in any city. But,with over 12,000 yellow cabs in the Big Apple, they also cause traffic jams.
Since 1873 when the first cable car started public service, the slow and noisy vehicle has been a symbol of San Francisco.Although once damaged by a serious earthquake and challenged by cars,it is never caught in traffic jams and provides better views than the subway.
But there are no such symbols in Los Angeles. If you visit you'd better rent a car.The city's public transportation is terrible. It can take hours to get across town by bus.The subway covers just a small part of the city centre. The light rail line only runs between the Long Beach hotel area and the city centre. That's why Angelenos love their private cars more than any other people in the world.

(1)How will you travel if you have a chance to London and want to avoid the traffic jam?

    A.Riding a vehicle.
    B.Taking a taxi.

  • 8.My husband jokes with me that my midlife crisis was having my now 11-year-old daughter in my 40s.
I started my career as Associate Editor at Woman's World magazine in the late 1990s.Then I was a magazine editor-in-chief for five national consumer publications and also contributed to magazines like Longevity and New Woman.
Four years after getting married in 2005,I eventually gave birth to my daughter,Crystal. As I wrote on Parenting.com:"As the doctor checked her vital organs and my husband counted her 10 perfect fingers and toes,I realized that my body had produced a wonder."
While my peers were dealing with the stresses of kids in school,I focused my creative energy on carving out my new identity.I was excited when I was offered a "Mom's Talk" column where I wrote about toys, breastfeeding, and my ongoing(追求)for "baby-free" time.
When Crystal was 3 years old,I wrote an essay about watching her dance at a toddler(學(xué)步的小孩) reading group at the library, instead of sitting down with the other children.I expected her performance to annoy people, but her joyful dancing attracted them and made me consider my own possibilities.
"Had I ever been that way,I wondered. If so,could I be like that again?Could I become as free as a child with her whole life ahead of her, ready and willing to be the star of her own production?"
As my daughter transformed from a toddler into a young girl, she continued to be my inspiration.I wrote about the new rules for babysitting and shared research showing that fathers who participated in housework had a positive impact on their daughter's future success on The Washington Post.
I focused on providing Crystal with resilience-building(韌性)when she neared her teens.I wrote about powerful phrases for The Week, like "no one is the judge of your self-worth".
As my daughter continues to grow during this messy time, there is one certainty:I will continue to tell my stories, through the eyes of my midlife wisdom.I can't wait to see her next chapter-and for you to read mine.
