  • 3.It just hadn't been a very good week.On Tuesday,Sam's father lost his job. Then on Wednesday,Sam's mother said that the rent on their apartment was going up.Now it was Friday, and Sam had just opened his e-mail to find an invitation from Rosa to her birthday party.
An invitation to a party at Rosa's would have been good news.Sam knew Rosa from Adventure Club.Members of the club took trips to places such as the Museum of Natural History.
Sam knew that he would enjoy Rosa's party, but he didn't want to go without a gift. What could he possibly buy her with the little money he had left in his pocket?Sam knew he couldn't ask Mom or Dad for any money—not this week!"Well,"Sam thought,"I don't have time to worry about this right now.I've got a report to write for school, and I'd better get to the library before it closes."
Later that afternoon,as Sam was leaving the library,he noticed a sign that said there was a book sale going on downstairs.Sam headed down for a quick look, and two books caught his eye.The first was a cookbook of Puerto Rican foods, and the second was a book about women explorers."Rosa would like these,"Sam thought,"but would it be tacky(俗氣) to give her used books for her birthday?"
Sam decided that a used gift was better than no gift at all.Besides,Rosa supported recycling in a big way,so probably she would not mind. With his last dollar,Sam bought the books and went home feeling a little better.
The party on Saturday was a lot of fun.Everyone told stories about the funny things they had done in Adventure Club—like the time they went hiking in a nearby park and fell into the lake.Rosa's mother and grandmother served them delicious food and creamy coconut milkshakes(奶油椰奶奶昔).Rosa opened all her gifts and thanked everyone for the nice things they had given her.She stopped for a moment when she opened Sam's gift, which made him wonder if she liked the books, but nothing was said. The moment passed, and soon the party was over.
When Sam got home,he opened his e-mail to find this note from Rosa:
    Dear Sam,
Of all the gifts I received today, yours was the nicest. How did you know I would love a book about women explorers and a cookbook of Puerto Rican foods? Now I have something to read that will inspire me to follow my dream of becoming an adventurer, and I have a book that I can share with my grandmother. She is getting older and wants to be sure her granddaughter knows how to make the wonderful foods of Puerto Rico.Thank you so much. You are a good friend.

  • 5.Do you like writing by hand or with a keyboard?
A new brain research, led by researchers at Norwegian University of Science and Technology shows that choosing handwriting instead of using a keyboard results in better learning and memory.
"When you write your shopping list or class notes by hand, you simply remember what you wrote better later,"said Audrey who did the study.
12 young grown-ups and 12 children took part in the study. This is the first time that children have taken part in such a study.Special machines were used to follow and record brain wave(電波) activity. Each person wore a special cap with over 250 electrodes(電極) on the head, and was asked to write by hand and use a keyboard. Each examination took 45 minutes for each person.
The results showed that the brain in both young grown-ups and children is much more active when writing by hand than when using a keyboard.According to Audrey, plenty of senses become active by holding a pen and pushing it down on paper, seeing the letters written and hearing the sound made while writing. These build the connection between different parts of the brain, opening the brain up for learning.
Audrey believes that the results call attention to the importance of children being asked to draw and write at an early age, especially at school."Learning to write by hand is a bit slower course, but it's important for children to write by hand.Students who write longer texts earlier are more motivated to write,"she said.
The hand movements which are used to form the shapes of letters are helpful in several ways."If you use a keyboard, you use the same movement for each letter.Writing by hand requires control of your fine motor(精細(xì)動(dòng)作) skills. It's important to put the brain in a learning condition as often as possible,"Audrey added. For example, you might use a keyboard to write an article, but you should take notes by hand during a class.

(1)How many people took part in the study?

    A.12.
    B.24.
    C.45.
    D.250.
(2)What is the result of the research?

A.You don't need to take notes by hand.
B.Using a keyboard results in better learning.
C.The brain is more active when we write by hand.
D.It was the first time for children to take part in the study.
(3)What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A.Ways to take notes by hand.
    B.Examples of using a keyboard.
C.How to control your fine motor Skills.
D.Why hand movements in writing are helpful.
(4)What is the best title for the text?

  • 17.Birds have been observed to sleep while in flight for the first time ever.Because of some flights that can often last several days, weeks,or even longer, some sea birds have long been thought to be able to fall fully asleep while "on the wing",though it was not proven.
Now researchers say they have evidence which shows birds can sleep in flight.Scientists from Max Planck Institute used a sample(抽樣) of 15 adult female frigate birds to test the sleep patterns. Each bird had a small electroencephalogram(EEG) sensor(傳感器) fitted to record changes in the animals brain activity as they flew for up to 10 days and over 3,000 kilometers.
The readings showed that during flight the birds could sleep using one hemisphere(半球)of the brain,or both together. It was known that the frigate birds could sleep with one "half" of the brain, which allows them to keep one eye open and "connected" to the awake half.
According to the research,it is sleeping technique used by birds for finding directions."Frigate birds sleep mostly while circling in rising air and keep the eye connected to the awake hemisphere facing the direction of flight, suggesting that they watch where they are going,"says the study.
Despite the ability to fall "fully" asleep, the birds were found to do it less in the air compared to on land. They slept "very little and less deeply" while in flight. This suggests that though it is possible, falling totally asleep is not very good during flight which will need the birds attention.
The researchers said the short sleep could be serving as "power naps" to keep the birds going until they return to land.Further study could help us understand why lack of sleep affects humans so badly.

(1)Why did the researchers fit the frigate birds with EEG sensors?

(2)How could the frigate birds sleep during flight?

(3)How do the sleeping birds find the direction?

(4)What could the short sleep serve as for the birds?
