Mary Ellison used to be a bit of an action woman，who would try her hand at anything，from self-driving tours to boating.But cycling was her real pjye.aision.As a member of a cycling club she went cycling with her husband Denis several times a week，covering at least 150 miles.
They'd been to France to cycle and watch the Tour de France，and they'd bad such a good time.Since she'd retired from the police，they'd wanted to do more cycling holidays.But those plans changed on 28 October last year.
Mary's husband and she had driven from their home in St Helens to Chester to meet up with their friends from the cycling club.It was a lovely dry morning and they were looking forward to a full day on the bikes.They parked their car，checked their bikes and set off.But they had only travelled a few yards when a seven-and-a-half-ton truck came up behind jye.aim.The truck was gathering speed in an attempt to pass them.Unfortunately，Denis was hit first as he was behind Mary.Then he crashed into her and the truck hit Mary too.
Denis was thrown onto the grass at the roadside，suffering a broken pelvis（骨盆） and inner injuries.Mary was thrown 10 feet into the air and landed straight on her legs.She remembered landing and shouting，"Help me!Help me!"，and then nothing.
Mary suffered a ruined pelvis，four broken vertobrae（椎骨），a broken knee and a large cut on the back of her head.She was rushed to the Countess of Chester Hospital where she was losing such a massive amount of blood that Manchester Blood Unit had to be contacted to keep supplies going.
Her son Philip was teaching in Liverpool when he got the call to come to the hospital urgently.Early on，he was told not to expect his mother to live.During Mary's operation，half of the team didn't think they could do any more for her and wanted to stop.
