All about the FIFA World Cup:a thrilling festival of football Get ready for the spectacular sporting event with our fact-packed tournament guide. On 20 November, the FIFA World Cup tournament kicks off in Qatar.Around five billion football fans around the world are expected to watch live on TV as the best men's teams battle it out for football's ultimate prize.
Who are some of the star players to watch?
From Son Hueng-min to Gareth Bale, there will be more top talent on show than ever in this tournament. It's the first time teams can take a squad of 26 players, rather than the usual 23.Sadly,it's likely to be the last World Cup for two of the greatest players in the game:Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo .It's a chance for some fresh talent to shine, however:look out for younger players such as England's Jude Bellingham,Germany's Jamal Musiala and Pedri for Spain.
Which teams will be at the World Cup?
Thirty-two teams will compete for the trophy. For the first time ever,Qatar will take part in the tournament. As hosts, they qualified automatically but the other 31 teams had to win a number of qualifying matches. The next World Cup in 2026 will be even bigger—forty-eight teams will be in competition.
Which teams are the favourites to win?
France are the current champions and one of the favourites to win again with a star-studded squad featuring strikers Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema.Other European teams hoping to do well include England,Germany,Portugal and Spain.Argentina,Brazil and Senegal are some of the strongest nations outside Europe.Wales are playing in their first World Cup since 1958,but Scotland and Northern Ireland did not qualify.
        How does the tournament work?
The 32 teams have been drawn into eight groups of four. The teams in each group play each other once in a mini-league,and the top two from each group progress to the knockout stage.Teams must win that game, then a quarter-final and a semi-final to reach the final on 18 December. As well as the World Cup trophy for the winning team, there are individual trophies for the best player(Golden Ball) and top scorer (Golden Boot).England's Captain Harry Kane won the Golden Boot in 2018.
What conditions will players face in this World Cup?
Since the first men's World Cup in 1930,the tournament has been played in June and July. However,Qatar is so hot in the summer that the 2022 competition was moved to November and December, when it's cooler. It's still warm, though, and each of the eight stadiums has air-condjye.aiioning.It will take the equivalent of 100 bathtubs of water a day just to keep the pitches in the stadiums green.
As well as a brand-new city and airport, seven spectacular new stadiums were built for this World Cup.Look out for the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, which glows different colours at night;the Al Janoub Stadium, which is designed to look like the sails of a traditional Qatari boat;and a stadium built from 974 recycled shipping containers. When the whistle blows for the final in one month's time at the Lusail Iconic Stadium,England's Harry Kane is one of many team captains who are dreaming big."We have to believe we can win it,"he said."What's the point of going to a World Cup and not believing that you can bring the trophy home?"

  • 2.An elderly couple in the UK claimed that they were held hostage by a pair of seagulls nesting on the roof of their home.Every time they tried to leave, the birds would become aggressive and attack them.
One time, when Roy Pickard, the 71-year-old husband, decided to take his chances and go outside,he was hit so hard on the back of the head that he had to be taken to the hospital for help.Local authorities have installed a gazebo outside the couple's home, which should offer some protection. That's the best they can do for now.
"The whole thing has been terrible," Roy old reporters. "I've not been able to go out of the front door.If I try to get out of the door, the two adult birds are right there, and I've got no chance. It's really frightening. My wife isn't well at the moment,so we're relying on me to get out." Luckily, the Pickards' garage is connected to their house and he can get out through there when he needs to do some shopping, but he doesn't dare get out of the car to close the garage door,so he always leaves it open until he comes back.
Roy has complained about the situation to both the local authorities and animal organizations like the RSPCA and RSPB,but their solutions have not been very helpful. The Wyer Council says that seagulls are protected while nesting,so all they can do is try to make the couple's life bearable by installing a gazebo and making arrangements so that the 77-year-old wife,Brenda, can reach her private appointments safely.Unfortunately, animal organizations wouldn't help the Pickards either. For now,all they can do is wait for the chicks to fly away. "The RSPCA and RSPB have been no help whatever. They seem to put the rights of these birds above those of people ,which is ridiculous," Roy said.

(1)What is the problem facing the Pickards?

A.The door of their garage can't be closed.
B.They can't walk out because of the seagulls.
C.Their pet birds often attack them aggressively.
D.A flock of birds nested on the roof of their house.
(2)What did local authorities do to help the couple?

A.Tell them to wait until the birds fly away.
B.Build a gazebo to provide some protection.
C.Send people to guard them outside the home.
D.Make arrangements for them to have appointments.
(3)What can we know about the Wyer Council according to the text?

A.It wants to protect the seagulls.
B.It is looking for an ideal solution.
C.It will help Roy do some shopping.
D.It hopes the couple can lead a simple life.
(4)What hopes the infer from Roy's words in paragraph 4?

A.The RSPCA and RSPB are useless.
B.Birds are more valuable than humans.
C.It is ridiculous for people to help others.
D.Roy is disappointed with the authorities' actions.

  • 3.    Waking up very early might sound exhausting to late risers, but can a night owl become an early bird?It is possible to make the switch, but it's not easy, said Michelle Drerup, director of behavioral sleep medicine at the Cleveland Clinic."A true night owl doesn't really feel great early in the morning when they wake up,especially when they're starting to change this."
A person's tendency to be a night owl, early bird or some place in between is known as their chronotype.Depending on their chronotype, people are likely to be more awake and alert during certain times of the day and sleepier during others.Chronotype is determined by a combination of nature and nurture(養(yǎng)育),scientists have found. On the nature side,a number of genes are known to play roles in determining whether a person prefers to be awake late at night or early in the morning.
Environment also plays a large role.People tend to participate in daily activities that reinforce their chronotype,Drerup said. For example, night owls feel more productive and alert at night,so they tend to exercise and socialize in the evening. These activities are stimulating and reinforce the person's tendency to stay up late.
The environment being an important factor,it is possible to change your sleep-wake cycle. If you want to wake up earlier, make the change gradually.Drerup recommended slowly shifting your wake-up alarm earlier by 15 to 20 minutes every few days over the course of several weeks until you're adjusted to your ideal schedule.Consistency is the key.
Limit exposure to light in the hour before bed, such as by staying away from screens,Drerup said.Light blocks the body's production of melatonin,a hormone(激素) that regulates our circadian rhythm(晝夜節(jié)律).And in the morning, try to get exposure to light as soon as you wake up,to end melatonin production.Avoid stimulating activities late in the evening.Instead of exercising at night, try working out in the morning or afternoon. You may also need to shift your meal times to earlier in the day.
If being a night owl works for you, there is actually no reason to change your sleep schedule. But staying up late becomes a problem when you must wake up early for work and school. It can also increase your risk of developing health problems.

(1)What can we learn about night owls?

A.They feel bad while trying to make a switch.
B.Their sleeping habit is fixed and can't be changed.
C.They tend to be more awake and alert than early birds.
D.Their habit of sleeping late can be worsened by many activities.
(2)What is the word"chronotype"used to describe?

    A.A person's sleeping patterns.
    B.A person's behavior during sleep.
C.A person's tendency to stay active.
D.A person's ability to adapt to something.
(3)What can help change a night owl into an early bird according to the text?

    a.Stop doing exercise at night.
b.Set the alarm clock earlier sometimes.
c.Stay away from screens before going to bed.
d.Avoid activities that make them excited at night.
    A.a(chǎn)bc
    B.a(chǎn)bd
    C.a(chǎn)cd
    D.bcd
(4)What is the text mainly about?

    A.The risks of sleeping late.
B.How to lead a healthy life.
C.The benefits of becoming an early bird.
D.How to change the sleep schedule of night owls.

  • 9.It had been a year since Susan,an attractive young woman of 34,became blind and she was suddenly thrown into a world of darkness, anger, frustration and self pity. And all she had to cling to was her husband, Mark
Mark,an Air Force officer, loved Susan with all his heart and he was determined to help his wife gain the strength and confidence she needed to become independent again.
Finally,Susan felt ready to return to her job,but how would she get there?Mark volunteered to drive her to work each day, even though they worked at opposite ends of the city.
At first, this comforted Susan.Soon, however,Mark decided that Susan had to start taking the bus again on her own.But she was still so fragile,so angry - how would she react?
Just as he predicted,Susan was horrified at the idea of taking the bus again. "How am I supposed to know where I am going?I feel like you're abandoning me." she responded bitterly.
Mark's heart broke to hear these words, but he knew what had to be done.He promised Susan that he would ride the bus with her,for as long as it took, until she got the hang of it.
For two solid weeks,Mark, in military uniform and all, accompanied Susan to and from work each day. He taught her everything to adapt to her new environment, including befriending the bus drivers who could watch out for her,and save her a seat.
Finally,Susan decided to try the trip on her own.Monday morning arrived, she said good-bye to Mark, and for the first time, they went their separate ways.
Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday…Each day on her own went perfectly, and Susan had never felt better. She was doing it!
On Friday morning,as she was paying the fare to get off the bus as usual, the driver said, "Young lady,I sure do envy you."
Surprised and curious, she asked the driver, "Why do you say that you envy me?"
