  • 2.There was once a man who built his own house. From top to bottom,he designed and built every inch of his home.It took him over a year, but in the end,he had a beautiful house of his own.No other house in his neighborhood looked like it so that many of his neighbors admired it.
But as time went by,his house started to have some problems. One day,a neighbor said,"Friend,it looks like your front yard is a bit overgrown."
The man replied, "Yes,I know. But it's okay.I'll cut the grass tomorrow."
A few days later,a mailman came by with a letter for the man.The mailman said, "Friend,it looks like your windows are a bit dirty."
The man replied, "Yes,I know. But it's okay.I'll wash them tomorrow."
Weeks passed by.Finally, the man's brother came over to pay a visit. He took one look at his brother's house and couldn't believe what he saw.The yard was in a mess, the paint on the walls was falling down and the windows were covered with dirt. The house looked like it could fall apart at any second- all because the man didn't do anything until "tomorrow".
When we procrastinate","tomorrow" can turn into "next week"or even"next year".It's much better to just take care of things today than to wait until some imaginary "tomorrow" that might not actually come.

(1)Why did many neighbors admire the man's house?

A.Because he spent more than a year building his house.
B.Because his house looked uncommon in the neighborhood.
C.Because the grass in the man's yard grew well.
D.Because the paint on the wall was beautiful and colorful.
(2)According to the passage, which is the right order of the following events?

a.The house was in a mess everywhere.
b.The man built his house on his own.
c.A mailman found the window was dirty.
d.The front yard was a bit overgrown.
    A.d-b-c-a
    B.b-c-a-d
    C.b-c-d-a
    D.b-d-c-a
(3)What would be the best title of the passage?

    A.Do Everything by Yourself
B.Don't Be Afraid to Wait Till Tomorrow
C.Get Your Work Done on Time
D.Ask Others to Help You Do Things

  • 菁優(yōu)網(wǎng)3.Smoking is harmful. But as soon as you give up the habit, everything will be OK,right?Wrong.
New research has found that even if you give up smoking, the damage it had done to your genes' will stay there for a much longer time.
In the research,a team of US scientists studied the blood of 16.000 people.Among them, some were smokers, some used to smoke, and the rest were non- smokers.Scientists compared their genes and found that more than 7,000 genes of smokers had changed.
The process that smoking makes changes to your genes is called "methylation".It affects" how your genes act- whether they are turned on or turned off.
According to NBC News, both heart disease and cancer are caused by genetic changes. Some people may have had the changes when they were born, but most people get them in their day- to-day lives while doing things like smoking.
When you stop smoking,a lot of these genes will return to normal in five years. "This means your body is trying to cure itself of the harmful impacts of smoking,"Roby Joehanese from Harvard Medical School told The Huffington Post.
But the changes in some of the genes stay for longer. They can stay for as long as 30 years. It's almost like leaving a footprint on wet cement -- it will always be there, even when you've walked away and when the cement becomes dry.
Although the study results may make people unhappy.jye.ai is a bright side:the finding could help scientists invent medicine to treat genetic damage caused by smoking or find ways to tell which people have heart disease or cancer risks.
People who have just stopped smoking or are planning to do so shouldn't feel bad about their choice either, because"the sooner you can stop smoking, the better you will be",suggested Stephanie at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

    .
A.shows the impact of genetic changes on the body
B.gives an example of genetic changes caused by smoking
C.describes the reasons of genetic changes

  • 4.On a boat near Costa Rica,a team of scientists is helping a turtle. The animal is having trouble breathing, and the team discovers why-- there is something inside its nose.A scientist tries to get it out,but the turtle cries in pain. Finally, after eight long minutes,a long object is pulled out.It is a 10-centimeter plastic straw.
The video of the turtle s rescue has been viewed millions of times on YouTube. It has helped raise a growing problem- the world's seas are full of plastic.Since 2000,there has been a huge increase in worldwide plastic production, but we recycle less than one-fifth of it.A lot of this plastic waste ends up in the ocean.Today, scientists think about 8.1 billion kilograms goes into the sea every year. Most of the plastic will never biodegrade but remain there for a long time.
This ocean plastic hurts millions of sea animals every year. Some fish eat plastic because it's covered with sea plants, and it looks and smells like food.Typically, eating plastic leads to more hunger. "Imagine you ate lunch and then just felt weak ...and hungry all day," says scientist Matthew Savoca." That would be very terrible. "Sometimes eating pieces of plastic can seriously hurt sea animals and even result in death.
Plastic is useful to people because it's strong and lasts a long time, but this is bad news for sea animals.According to Savoca, "Single-use plastics, such as straws, water bottles, and plastic bags, are the worst." These objects are used only once before we throw them away.About 700 sea animals, including the turtle from the video, have been caught in or have eaten this kind of plastic.Luckily, the turtle was alive and returned to the ocean.
How will plastic affect sea animals in the long term?"I think we'll know the answers in 5--10 years," says Debra Lee Magadini from Columbia University. But by then, another 25 million tons of plastic will already be in the ocean.

    C.move away
    D.break down
(3)Which of the following is TRUE about ocean plastic?

B.The plastic waste in the ocean hurts sea animals and can even kill them.
C.8.1 billion tons of plastic waste goes into the sea every year from the land.
D.Scientists will have a clear understanding of the ocean's plastic problem in 5-10 years.
(4)What can be the best title for the passage?

    A.The Work of Scientists
    B.Dangers Turtles Are Facing

  • 5.How do you feel about nature? After spending hours indoors,do you feel better when you visit your local park?I believe the answer must be "YES".
Most people think that nature is good for our bodies and brains. However, humans are spending more time inside and less time outside. For example, the number of visitors to Canada s national parks is getting smaller every year. And in countries such as the USA,only 10% of teenagers spend time outside every day. Many doctors feel that this is a problem in the twenty-first century.
Therefore, some doctors are studying the connection between nature and health:one example is the work of Dr.Matilda in Sweden. The doctor gave people a math test.During the test, their heart rates(心率) were fast. After the test, one group of people sat in a 3 D- virtual-reality(虛擬現(xiàn)實(shí)) room for fifteen minutes with pictures and sounds of nature.Their heart rates were slower than people's in the other group. The virtual touch with nature helped them feel more relaxed. The natural world allows our brains to rest and slow down, and can leave us feeling happier and less stressed.Another example from Canada also shows nature is good for health. In Toronto, researchers studied 31,000 people living in the city.In general, they found that healthier people lived near parks.
Because of studies like these, some countries and cities want people to enjoy nature in their everyday life.In Dubai, people plan to build a new shopping mall with a large garden,so shoppers can relax outside with trees, plants and water. And South Korea has new forests near its cities and around 13 million people visit these forests every year.Getting close to nature has been thought to be necessary for brain development in children. In Switzerland, "forest schools" are popular.School children study their subjects in the forests and exercise a lot outside. So after building cities for so long, perhaps it's now time to start rebuilding nature.
In a word, nature holds a special kind of energy:it is clean, wild and spirit- renewing.jye.ai makes us grow stronger.

(1)What is the purpose of Paragraph 2?

A.To raise the problem of people's lifestyle.
B.To offer some advice for people's lives.
C.To share people's ideas about nature.
D.To show people's lives in different countries.
(2)What do the results of the studies in Paragraph 3 mainly show?

A.More healthier Canadians live close to parks.
B.The math test is difficult and makes people nervous.
C.Nature can relax people and influence them positively.
    D.People's heart rates increase in a 3 D virtual-reality room.
(3)To help people enjoy nature, countries do the following except
    .
    A.rebuilding nature near cities
B.having classes and doing sports in nature
C.planning a green area for shoppers
    D.starting a brain development programme
(4)Which of the following sentences can be best put in the blank
    ?
A.So why not run away from the cities?
