There is an old saying in English: "Laughter is the best medicine." Until recently, few people took the saying very seriously. Now,however, doctors have begun to investigate laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found evidence that laughter really can improve people's health.
Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body.People watched funny films, while doctors checked their heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart rate and the rate of breathing;it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet.If laughter exercises the body,it must be beneficial.
Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be capable of reducing the effect of pain on the body.In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group, which tolerated the pain for the longest time, was the group, which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce endorphins(內啡肽) in the brain. These are natural chemicals that diminish both stress and pain.
There is also some evidence to suggest that laughter helps the body's immune(免疫的) system, that is,the system which fights jye.aifection.In an experiment, one group of students watched a funny video while another group served as the control group—in other words,a group with which to compare the first group.Doctors checked the blood of the students in both groups and found that the people in the group that watched the video had an increase in the activity of their blood cells, that is,the cells which fight infection.
As a result of these discoveries, some doctors and psychiatrists(精神病學家) in the United States now hold laughter clinics,in which they try to improve their patients' conditions by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.

C.Laughter has been investigated long since.
D.Laughter has no effect on the body.
(2)Doctors have found that laughter
.
A.keeps down blood pressure
B.has similar effects to physical exercise
C.decreases the heart rate
D.increases stress
(3)Which of the following statements of laughter is NOT true, according to the passage?
A.It reduces pain.
B.It exercises the body.
C.It improves the body's immune system.
D.It can cure cancer.
(4)What do doctors in a laughter clinic do?
A.They laugh at their patients.
B.They encourage their patients to laugh.

At the beginning of the new term,a teacher at Ringrose Kindergarten decided to do something different to choose "the Excellent Kid" of this term. One day the teacher brought a bag of boiled seeds, and then called the kids together, and said, "I am going to give each one of you a seed today,a very special seed. You are to plant the seed, water it and come back here at the end of this term with what you have grown from the seed you bring to me,and the one I choose will be "the Excellent Kid".
Like the others,a boy named James received a seed.He went home and told his mother the story excitedly. She helped him get a pot and soil, and he planted the seed.Evert day he would water it and watch to see if it had grown. After about three weeks, some of the other kids began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow.
James kept checking his seed, but nothing grew.Four weeks, five weeks went by,still nothing.By now, others were all talking about their plants, but James didn't have a plant and he felt like a failure.
Two months went by,there was still nothing in James' pot.He just knew he had ruined his seed.Everyone else had tall plants, but he had nothing.James didn't say anything. However,he just kept watering the fertilizing (給……施肥) the soil, expecting the seed to grow.
A term finally went by.All the kids brought their plants to the teacher for inspection.James told his mother he wasn't going to take an empty pot.But she encouraged him to go,and to be honest about what happened.James felt restless because it would be the most embarrassing moment of his life, but he knew his mother was right.
Paragraph 1:
He took his empty pot to the classroom.__________________
Paragraph 2:
All the other kids looked at the teacher in surprise._______________________
