  • 2.I remember doing the household chores to help my mother when I was nine.I hated changing the vacuum cleaner(真空吸塵器)bag and picking up things the machine did not suck up.Twenty years later,in 1978,with this lifelong dislike of the way the machine worked,I decided to make a bagless one.
Easier said than done,of course.I didn't realize that I would spend the next five years perfecting my design,a process that resulted in 5,127 different prototypes(樣機(jī)).By the time I made my 15th prototype,my third child was born.By 2,627,my wife and I were really counting our pennies.By 3,727,my wife was giving art lessons for some extra cash, and we were getting further and further into debt. These were tough times, but each failure brought me closer to solving the problem.
In the early 1980s,I started trying to get licensing agreements for my technology. The reality was very different, however. The major vacuum makers had built a business model based on the profits from bags and filters (濾網(wǎng)).No one would license my idea, not because it was a bad one,but because it was bad for business. But soon after, the companies that I had talked with started making machines like mine.I had to fight legal battles on both sides of the Atlantic to protect the patents on my vacuum cleaner.
I was still in financial difficulties until 1993,when my bank manager personally persuaded Lloyds Bank to lend me $1 million. Then I was able to go into production.Within two years, the Dyson vacuum cleaner became a best-seller in Britain.
Today,I still embrace risk and the potential for failure as part of the process.Nothing beats the excitement of invention.

(1)What drove the author to make a bagless vacuum cleaner?

    A.His willingness to help mom.
    B.His curiosity about machines.
C.His trouble in doing family chores.
    D.His discontent with existing cleaners.
(2)What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us?

A.The help from the author's wife.
B.The financial problems of the family.
C.The tough process of the new invention.
D.The procedures of making a bagless cleaner.
(3)Why did the companies refuse to license the author's technology?

A.They thought they might suffer loss.
B.They considered it not good enough.
    C.They faced legal problems themselves.
D.They had begun making such machines.
(4)What lesson may the author learn from the experience?

    A.Think twice before acting.
B.Failure is the mother of success.
    C.Actions speak louder than words.
D.A good beginning makes a good ending.

  • 3.Why College Is Not Home The college years are supposed to be a time for important growth in autonomy(自主性)and the development of adult identity. However, now they are becoming an extended period of adolescence, during which many of today's students are not shouldered with adult responsibilities.
For previous generations, college was a decisive break from parental control;guidance and support needed to come from people of the same age and from withjye.ai.In the past two decades, however, continued connection with and dependence on family, thanks to cell phones, email and social media, have increased significantly. Some parents go so far as to help with coursework.Instead of promoting the idea of college as a passage from the shelter of the family to autonomy and adult responsibility, universities have given in to the idea that they should provide the same environment as that of the home.
To prepare for increased autonomy and responsibility, college needs to be a time of exploration and experimentation. This process involves "trying on" new ways of thinking about oneself both intellectually(在思維方面) and personally. While we should provide "safe spaces" within colleges,we must also make it safe to express opinions and challenge majority views.Intellectual growth and flexibility are fostered by strict debate and questioning.
Learning to deal with the social world is equally important.Because a college community(群體)differs from the family, many students will struggle to find a sense of belonging. If students rely on administrators to regulate their social behavior and thinking pattern, they are not facing the challenge of finding an identity within a larger and complex community.
Moreover, the tendency for universities to monitor and shape student behavior runs up against another characteristic of young adults:the response to being controlled by their elders. If acceptable social behavior is too strictly defined(規(guī)定)and controlled, the insensitive or aggressive behavior that administrators are seeking to minimize may actually be encouraged.
It is not surprising that young people are likely to burst out, particularly when there are reasons to do so.Our generation once joined hands and stood firm at times of national emergency. What is lacking today is the conflict between adolescent's desire for autonomy and their understanding of an unsafe world. Therefore, there is the desire for their dorms to be replacement homes and not places to experience intellectual growth.
Every college discussion about community values, social climate and behavior should include recognition of the developmental importance of student autonomy and self-regulation,of the necessary tension between safety and self-discovery.

(1)What's the author's attitude toward continued parental guidance to college students?

    A.Sympathetic.
    B.Disapproving.
    C.Supportive.
    D.Neutral.
(2)The underlined word "passage" in Paragraph 2 means
    .
    A.change
    B.choice
    C.text
    D.extension
(3)According to the author, what role should college play?

A.To develop a shared identity among students.
B.To define and regulate students' social behavior.
C.To provide a safe world without tension for students.
D.To foster students' intellectual and personal development.
(4)Which of the following shows the development of ideas in the passage?

    A. 菁優(yōu)網(wǎng)B. 菁優(yōu)網(wǎng)C. 菁優(yōu)網(wǎng)D. 菁優(yōu)網(wǎng)

  • 4.When we meet someone for the first time,we usually get a vague sense of what kind of person they are by the way they shake hands, talk,or walk.In the age of social networking, however, first impressions are sometimes made even before we actually meet someone in person---that is,by looking at their profile photo.
According to a recent study, these social images say a lot about our personality. In the study, presented in a paper at the International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media,a group of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania in the US used software to analyze the profile pictures of 66,000 users of US social platform Twitter and 3,200 of their tweets. At the same time, about 434 participants were asked to complete a survey about their personality type. The researchers wanted to find out if there was a connection between personality traits-like openness, extroversion, and neuroticism(神經(jīng)質(zhì))-and a person's profile picture.
According to the results, open people are more likely to pose in an unusual way and use objects such as glasses or a guitar in their profile photo because they enjoy new and exciting experiences.Meanwhile, neurotic people often hold back their negative emotions. They try to avoid showing their face.Instead, they use an image of something like a pet,a car or a building.
Apart from the objects in profile pictures, the colors used in them also give us some hints about the photo's owner. For example, extraverts were found to have the most colorful profile images,as they want to emphasize their personality and show themselves off,the researchers wrote.
Although social media photos "usually represent an extension of one's self, they also allow a user to shape his or her own personality and idealized view," according to the researchers. So,when choosing a profile photo, maybe we should ask ourselves first what kind of image we'd like to convey. After all, first impressions always last.

(1)What helps form the first impressions with the development of network?

    A.Shaking hands.
    B.Greetings.
    C.Profile pictures.
    D.Gestures.
(2)What's the purpose of the study?

    A.To analyze the users' preference.
B.To conduct a survey about personality type.
C.To explore the formation of first impression.
D.To seek out the link between characters and profile photos.
(3)According to the study,an outgoing person may
    .
A.choose a puppy dog as an image
B.share a distinct pose in his photo
C.fill his profile photo with light colors
    D.care little about his image
(4)What is the best title for the text?

    A.Be Mindful of Your Personality
B.Make Use of Your Social Image
    C.First Impressions Make a Difference
    D.Profile Photos Reveal Your Personality
