  • 2.    Scott Kelly visited the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW).He shared his experiences in space with students.
Kelly graduated from college with an engineering degree in 1987.He was later accepted into Navy flight school. In 1995,Kelly sent his application to NASA to become an astronaut. He thought, "If I'm going to fail at something,I might as well just fail at something that I think I can't achieve." That's what Kelly told the audience at UW.To his surprise,he landed an interview.
From 1999 to 2016,Kelly took part in four space missions. His first was a repair trip to the Hubble Space Telescope. On his second trip,in 2007,he was the mission commander.Kelly finished his third mission in 2011.It was a five-month stay on the International Space Station (ISS).NASA was interested in the idea of sending people to space for an even longer period of time. The space agency then chose Kelly to set off on a 340-day mission to the ISS.The trip became one of the longest time ever spent in space.
The main purpose of the mission was to study how the human body responds to a long space flight.Space weakens your bones and muscles because your body doesn't have to use them much in low gravity. That s why astronauts work out for at least two hours a day.Eyesight is also greatly affected by space travel.Kelly says that he wears glasses to correct his vision because of his time spent in space.
There's still a lot to learn about the effects of space flights on the body. And there's always work to be done in space. The more people who get interested in space, the more steps we can take toward a possible moon base,or even a Mars base.
For kids desiring to become astronauts,Kelly has some advice, "Choose something that you like, because if you like it,you'll do better at it".

    A.Five months.
    B.About half a year.
    C.Around a year.
    D.Two years.
(3)What can we learn about the effects of space flights?

A.Wearing glasses in space can avoid them.
B.They disappear when astronauts get home.
    C.Professional exercise can reduce them.
    D.Researchers have already overcome them.
(4)What may Kelly agree with according to the last paragraph?

  • 3.    A special architect-designer in southern Finland has returned to a lake with a snow shovel (雪鏟) to draw a large animal on the ice for the sixth year in a row.On Dec.4,Pasi Widgren drew a fox (狐貍) that measured about 295 feet on Lake Pitkajarvi, north of Helsjye.aiki.In previous years,he used a shovel to draw a bear and a bird always on the same lake.
Widgren has drawn animals on local lakes every winter since 2016 near his home in a village not far from Lahti,a town of around 120,000 people. The drawings disappear when more snow falls. He hopes his artworks will "make people happy and encourage them to go out to hike in beautiful nature."
The idea for this form of art came "suddenly a couple of years ago when I realized I may have a special ability of coordination (協(xié)調(diào)) to do this kind of thing myself," the 40-year-old told the Associated Press.
When he reached Lake Pitkajarvi this month,he tested the thickness of the ice to make sure it was thick enough to walk and work on.At 4-6 inches thick,it was.
"Of course,I had ice awls (冰錐) with me,around my neck," in case the ice cracked and he had to save himself,Widgren said.
"Then I drew the contours (輪廓) of the figure by walking and thinking at the same time so it matched my image of a fox and then I started to 'draw' using the snow shovel," he explained.
        Four hours later,Widgren was done.
"I walked to the top of the hills" about 150 feet above the lake "to look at the result, drank coffee and took some photos and videos as a memory of doing this."
The fox was less visible by Monday because it had snowed a little. "It's also very important to me that making this kind of art doesn't leave any marks on nature," Widgren said.

(1)In what way is Widgren different as an artist?

A.He uses unique and high-tech art materials.
B.He invites local people to paint with him.
C.He draws animals on the ice of lakes.
D.He paints the same fox every year.
(2)What is Widgren's purpose in creating his artworks?

A.To become famous in his hometown.
B.To call on people to get close to nature.
C.To attract more visitors to his hometown.
D.To improve his special ability of coordination.
(3)What does the underlined word "cracked" in paragraph 5 mean?

    A.Formed.
    B.Covered.
    C.Disappeared.
    D.Broke.
(4)What is significant to Widgren when making his art?

    A.Reducing environmental impact.
    B.Recording his art creation process.
    C.Making his artworks more visible.
    D.Being humorous and creative.

五、讀后續(xù)寫

  • 9.閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
Where were you when you first heard My Heart Will Go On?You know that love song that took over the world in the late 1990s,the one that ruled radios and television screens.jye.ai trilled through the air when you rang your neighbour's doorbell,or rang out of a Valentine's Day musical card—the song we love to hate now because it is almost shameful to admit how much we listened to it in 1998.I'm no fan of the song, but I'll tell you one thing—it saved my life.
I remember where I was when I heard the song,13 years old, only a few weeks away from receiving my class eight report card. When my mother and I went to collect it from school, the skies were grey.On the left side of the report card was the failure of my choosing—Maths,Physics and Chemistry—on the bottom of the right hand side it said Not Promoted(不升級) in red ink.My mother,an English teacher in another Calcutta school, was too proud to beg the principal for the three marks I needed in Chemis-try to be promoted to class nine.I walked along, thinking of the last song I was watching on MTV before we left for school. It was Dion's all knowing hit My Heart Will Go On: "You have come to show you,go on…."
I was a fool to have ever thought that I could get away with not studying and watching MTV for hours on end.Till class eight,my father had refused to get a cable connection on the grounds that my brother and I would forever be glued to the screen, not study and fail the exams. The year after he gave in to his desire to watch late night football,I proved him right.I failed class eight because I was in love with the Backstreet Boys and would watch MTV all the time so that I wouldn't miss a single video. That's the whole truth and the band will never know the price I paid for my love.
