  • 菁優(yōu)網(wǎng)111.When was the last time you heard a"male(男性的)"voice assistant(助手)? (1)
However,a new UN study argues that this shows an unfairness.
The UNESCO report has looked into the effect of having female voice assistants. (2)
Because the speech of most voice assistants is female,it sends a signal that women are ready to please helpers. It's available with a hard voice order like "hey" or "OK".
Meanwhile,by naming voice assistants with traditionally female names, like Alexa and Siri, tech companies have also strengthened a certain image of women.(3)

This does matter because they come back to affect how young girls and young women see themselves and the way they have dreams for the future. It's almost like going back to the image of women that was held in the 1950s or 1960s.
       (4)
Nowadays,80 percent of AI professors are men, while just 15 percent of AI research workers at Facebook and 10 percent at Google are women.
These mistakes happen because technologists do not have the diverse(多元化) teams and diversity of thought.(5)
The report also calls for more women to work in the tech field.

A.Unluckily, the embarrassing situation will probably last for a long term.
B.For example,in Norwegian,Siri means"a beautiful woman who leads you to victory".
C.It says they encourage the idea that women typically hold assistant jobs and that they should be "soft".
D.It's believed that the problem is a result of the fact that there are not so many women workers in the tech field.
E.Chances are never,as most of the AI we're used to hearing is "female",like Apple's Siri or Amazon's Alexa.
F.To deal with the problem, some technologists have been designing a genderless(無(wú)性別的) digital voice, reported BBC News.

  • 菁優(yōu)網(wǎng)112.Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit, most people don't even notice that they're doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other,it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.
A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason for this is that the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart and that crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won't feel any immediate effects, but repeated,drawn-out increases in blood pressure can cause long-term health issues. So,planning to sit for a long period of time?Don't keep your legs crossed.
Crossing your legs at the knee can also cause pressure on the major nerve in your leg that passes just below your knee and along the outside of your leg, explains Richard Graves,a medical expert. This pressure can cause numbness and temporary of some of the muscles in your foot and leg, preventing you from being able to raise your ankle -- what we know as that "pins and needles" sensation. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage.
So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.

(1)What can we learn about crossing one's legs?

A.It is a very bad social habit.
B.It can do harm to people's health.
    C.It is usually practiced deliberately.
D.It can make others feel uncomfortable.

    .
    A.a(chǎn)ffect your blood pressure
    B.resist gravity effectively
    C.lead to heart attacks easily
    D.improve the function of legs
(3)In the third paragraph "pins and needles" probably means
    .
    A.being highly flexible
    B.being a little tired
    C.serious muscle injuries
    D.slight sharp pains
(4)What is the main purpose of the text?

B.To evaluate effects of an experiment.
    C.To give readers some advice.
    D.To introduce research methods.

  • 113.A survey said the average Asian dad spent one minute a day with his children.I was shocked.I mean,a whole minute?Every day?Get real.Once a week maybe. The fact is,many Asian males are terrible at kid- related thjye.aigs.In fact,I am one of them.
Child- rearing° doesn't come naturally to guys.My mother knew the names of our teachers, best friends and crushes. My dad was only vaguely aware there were short people sharing the apartment. My mother bought healthy fresh food at the market every day.My dad would only go shopping when there was nothing in the fridge except a jar of butter. Then he'd buy beer.My mother always knew the right questions to ask our teachers. My dad would ask my English teacher if she could get us a discount on school fees.My mother served kid food to kids.My dad added chili sauce to everything, including our baby food.
The truth is,mothers have superpowers. My son fell off a wall once and hurt himself all over.I demanded someone bring me a computer so I could google what to do.My wife ignored me and did some sort of chanting phrase such as "Mummy kiss it better," and cured 17 separate injuries in less than 15 seconds.
Yes,mothers are incredible people, but they are not always correct.Yet honesty forces me to record the fact that mothers only know best 99.99 percent of the time. Here are some famous slip-ups.
The mother of Bill Gates: "If you're going to drop out of college and hang out with your stupid friends, don't come running to me when you find yourself penniless." The mother of Albert Einstein: "When you grow up,you'll find that sitting around thinking about the nature of time and space won't pay the grocery bills. "The mother of George W.Bush: "You'll never be like your dad,who became President of the United States and started his own war."

  • 114.Many kids help out around the house with chores such as emptying the dishwasher, putting laundry away, and taking out the trash. In exchange, some kids get allowances or other rewards such as extra computer time.
But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores.Susie Walton,a parenting educator and family coach, believes that by rewarding kids, parents are sending a message that work isn't worth doing unless you get something in return. "Running any kind of household is a team effort,Susie said. "A home is a living space for everyone in the family. It's important for kids to see that we all have responsibilities in the house, and that families decide together how they want their home to look, and how they are going to keep it looking like everyone wants it to look."
Other people believe that getting a cash allowance or other rewards motivates kids to do chores, and it also teaches them real world lessons about how we need to work to earn money. There are also new applications that give kids points and digital gifts that can be redeemed either online or in the real world. With the Chore Monster app, kids earn digital points by completing chores that they can turn in for real-life rewards such as extra Xbox time or a trip to the mall, "Our goal is to encourage kids to earn rewards," says Chris Bergman, founder of ChoreMonster, "Kids need positive reinforcement to help motivate them."
What do you think?Should kids be rewarded for doing chores?Or should kids help out around their homes without getting anything in return?
Write a 200-word response.Send it to tfkasks4 you @ timeforkids.com.Your response may be published in a future issue of Time For Kids. Please include your grade and contact information of your parent or teacher if you want your response to be published. The deadline for responding is February 18.

  • 115.Do you have to wear uniforms to school every day?Do you like them or you just want to wear your own clothes? Many students just wonder why they can't wear whatever they like, for teenagers want to be different from others.
In fact, there are several reasons why school uniforms are a good idea.First of all, uniforms help the school look smart. The students feel that they belong to a particular" group. When every student in the school wears the uniform, nobody has to worry about fashion.Everybody wears the same style of clothes.Uniforms can be useful in unexpected ways.A school in Ireland has introduced an interesting new uniform. On the edge" of the jacket, there is a piece of cloth which gives off light in the dark. When the children are walking or cycling to school on dark mornings, car drivers can easily see them.
But can uniforms help improve school standards? The answer to this question is not clear.
One study in America found that students' grades improved a little after the school introduced uniforms. But some students didn't want to wear the uniform.Other American studies showed that uniforms have nothing to do with the school performance.
School uniforms are traditional in Britain, but some schools are starting to get rid of them.Students of some very good schools do not have to wear uniforms now. However, uniforms are still popular.Pupils at about 90 percent of British secondary schools wear uniforms.

  • 116.Getting electricity has always been a problem for the 173 people living in a small village in Peru.(1)
Because heavy rains destroyed the only power cables(電線) in the area. The villagers had to use old lamps. They are not only expensive but also dangerous because of something harmful they produce.
Luckily, scientists in Peru heard about their problem and found a wonderful solution.(2)
Both of them can be easily found in the forest where the village lies. The lamp takes energy from a plant growing in a wooden box and uses it to light up an LED light.(3)

As plants create their food by using the sun's energy, water from the soil(土),they also produce waste which they return to the soil.Small animals in the soil eat this waste and they produce energy.(4)
And then keep it in the lamp's batteries for later use.The scientists say battery can power a 50-watt LED light for two hour- enough time for local villagers to get their evening work done.
The university gave ten Plant Lamps to the villagers in October 2015.(5)
Elmer Rmairez, who invented the lamp, believes the Plant Lamp could help improve the lives of many poor people.

    A.So far,they have been a huge success!
B.That may sound amazing and even impossible.
C.However, things went from bad to worse in March 2015.
D.They made a lamp that can be powered by plants and soil.
E.The research group put special sticks inside the soil to get the energy.

  • 菁優(yōu)網(wǎng)117.Most of your textbooks are single use. After graduating, old text books are thrown away, which is a big waste of money and paper.
Many countries already reuse their textbooks. In the US,book companies will come to schools and buy used books. They then resell them to new students the following year at a lower price.A high school textbook in the US can have up to eight owners before it is no longer in a good enough condition to be used, according to Xinhua. The book can then be recycled.
In China, according to the National Press and Publication Administration, students across the country buy 2.8 billion new textbooks every year.If the students of the following year could reuse these textbooks,it would save over 20 billion yuan each year. That's enough money to build 40,000 primary schools,China Daily noted.
Primary and junior high school students in several Chinese cities are reusing music, arts, science and IT textbooks. That's because students don't have to take down many notes in their textbooks for these subjects, which makes them suitable for reusing.
However, these books only account for a tiny part of the total number of textbooks. As there is no good way for redistributing" second-hand textbooks, most textbooks still end up as waste, the Paper reported.
Changes in curricula also make it hard to reuse textbooks. "I'm among the first group of students to take classes after the recent curricular reform,so I have to buy new textbooks that previous students didn't use," Sun Run,a high school student from Hangzhou.
Though China has met difficulties on the way to reusing textbooks, the government need to do something to push the second- hand textbook business in the schools. We should go ahead with the project for the future development.

(1)How do book companies in the US help students reuse textbooks?

    A.They make new books.
    B.They repair used books.
C.They carry them to rubbish station.
D.They buy used books and then sell them.
(2)How does the writer show the importance of reusing textbooks in Para.3?

    A.By using numbers.
    B.By giving examples.
    C.By asking questions.
    D.By telling stories.
(3)What do the underlined words "these books" in Para.5 refer to?

    A.All the reused text books.
    B.All the new textbooks.
    C.The second-hand text books.
    D.Music,arts,science and IT textbooks.
(4)What can we infer(推測(cè)) from the above passage?

A.China did better in reusing old textbooks than the US.
B.Throwing old textbooks is a waste of money and paper.
C.It seems that China makes a little progress in reusing old textbooks.
D.Sun Run has already reused the textbooks because of the recent curricular.

  • 119.It isn't easy to climb the Old Man of Hoy,one of the tallest in the United Kingdom. It is even more dangerous if you happen to be a blind climber,as Jesse Dufton is.The 34-year-old was born with a rare genetic disease that left him with less than 20 percent of his vision, which then kept dropping over the years. He chooses to climb, "because it's better than sitting at home feeling sorry for yourself, right?Climbing is not the most dangerous thing I do on an average day, crossing the road on the way to work is far more risky than Hoy."
Dufton has been climbing mountains since childhood. As a skilled climber, his father would take him out at weekends. He was always physical then, always up for adventure. He played sports at school, though quickly grew frustrated with many of them. "Badminton was a joke for someone like me,and even blind cricket with a ball with a bell in it annoyed me." Instead he was attracted to climbing and skiing, and insists that climbing is one of the safer activities for a blind person to undertake. "True, you can't see the handholds,or the footholds. You can't see where the opportunities are,or where to place your hands and your gear,so you just have to take it slowly. You search around until you can feel for something to hold onto, and then basically repeat the process over and over again. To keep calm in these situations helps."
It was Jesse himself who made a documentary happen. He told the filmmaker Alistair Lee about his pastime, believing it might be worth capturing on film,"I realized my story was quite unusual,"he says, adding that he felt almost duty-bound to share it. "If somebody like me watches it,and they find it inspirational, then it wouldn't be right for me to keep that from them, wouldn't it?"

  • 菁優(yōu)網(wǎng)120.Bees play a vital role in the world,Unfortunately, bees are dying by the second,The main purpose of bees is to make jye.ai.Honey,shockingly,does not exist for human consumption,it is essential to the insects.Honeybees store honey in their hives" in order for the bees to have energy for their flight muscles and for heating the hive during the winter period. They collect pollen which supplies protein" for young bees to grow.
According to Honey.jye.ai.,the increased production and quality of agricultural crops as a result of honey bee pollination is valued more than $14.6 billion per year. These insects are responsible for over 70 of the fruits and vegetables we eat today, including apples, grapes, coffee, beans, and broccoli.
So if they are so valuable to agriculture, why do they keep dying off?A key suspect seems to be pesticides(農(nóng)藥).Honeybees who are exposed to pesticides result in the damage to their neurological functions, specifically memory or behavior. And that's why the majority of worker bees disappear and leave behind a queen, plenty of food and a few nurse bees to care for the remaining immature bees and the queen. There are several other causes to the decline of bees, including the destruction of natural habitat, like woodlands, forests, and other habitats for bees.Climate change is also a factor in the decline of the wild bee population.
Actually, there are a variety of methods to help the bee population grow. One way is to start your own organic garden by planting bee friendly plants.Pesticides are used in both industrial practices and even in your home,so it is best to find organic seeds and weed killers.

(1)Why do honeybees store honey in their hives?

A.To provide enough honey for human to consume.
B.To draw protein out of honey for young bees.
C.To help attract other insects and make hives stronger.
D.To strengthen bee muscles and heat hives in winter.

    .
A.bees supply human beings with basic food
B.bees mainly live on these agricultural crops
C.bees are of great importance to fruits and vegetables
D.bees can bring in more money for farmers every year
(3)What is most likely to cause the worker bees to leave their hives behind?

    A.The lack of food.
    B.The abuse of pesticides.
    C.The fighting among bees.
    D.The destruction of the habitats.
(4)What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?

    A.Another way to save bees.
    B.Other tips for choosing seeds.
C.More methods to plant green organic fruits.
D.Causes of the decline in the wild bee population.
