Early in my teaching career,I heard countless excuses - most of them made up,many of them amusing - for why students didn't have their homework. And,yes, "the dog ate it " was one of them.As time passed,I grew tired of hearing "I don't have my homework because...".So I quit accepting any excuse.
When I was transferred to an inner-city middle school,I took my no-nonsense attitude with me. "No excuses,no extensions!" I warned my eighth graders on the first day of school.I collected homework at the beginning of each class. When a student didn't have it,I never asked why.Instead,I sighed loudly, shook my head in dramatic disgust and with the student looking on - recorded a zero in the grade book.I soon gained the reputation I thought I wanted.
Then, one afternoon, shortly after the dismissal bell rang,Anthony approached me. "Could I talk to you a minute?" he asked shyly, not taking his eyes off the floor. "I know you don't accept any explanation, but I don't want you to think I'm a slacker(偷懶的人)because I come to school without mine so often."
Anthony looked up at me for the first time, and I could see that his lower lip was quivering. "It's just that...well,my dad moved out,and my mom waits tables at night,so I have to take care of my little brothers.Sometimes they cry a lot,and it makes it hard to concentrate."
I put my hand on Anthony's thin shoulder. "Why are you just now telling me..?" I stopped in mid-sentence.I knew why.So I changed the question. "Would it help if you stay here after school and work on it before you go home?"
    He swallowed hard and nodded.

Paragraph 1 The next day,I made an announcement to all my students.

If there's one thing I can't stand people saying,it's,"I'm no good at anything...I don't have any talent." I just don't buy that at all.To me,everyone has at least one talent, and while it sometimes takes you a lifetime to find,it does exist. There was a time,of course, when I didn't believe that. What changed my mind was a seemingly small event that took place back in 1953.
At that time I was a high school student.I was a funny-looking skinny little boy named Eugene Orowitz, who weighed barely 100 pounds.I was a good student, but as far as I was concerned,in just about every other department I was a loser.I desperately wanted to fit in,to be something and do something well. But I hadn't found anything I was good at.One sunny afternoon, our gym class went out to the school's running track. The teacher taught us all various track and field events.I was a loser in all of them. Then came the javelin(標(biāo)槍).Suddenly something inside me began saying,"Try it!Try it!" I had to wait my turn, though, because several others wanted a break at the javelin too.Shy and scared,I watched them, trying not to look too eager. Finally, when everyone had had a chance to throw—the best throw going about 30 yards—I looked at the teacher.
"Hey,Orowitz, you want to try?" he asked.
Embarrassed,I looked down, but managed to nod my head.
"Well, come on then," he said impatiently, and handed me the javelin.Behind me I could hear some of my classmates laughing. As I grasped the javelin in my hand,I was seized with a strange feeling—a new-found excitement. For some crazy reason,I was relaxed over what I was about to do,even though I'd never done it before.I raised the javelin over my head, took six quick steps and let the thing go.The same voice that had urged me into throwing it,now told me it was a good throw.

Dark rain clouds were gathering in the sky.I was cycling as fast as I could to get home before the downpour. When I felt a few big drops on my head,I decided to head for a bus stop, about a hundred meters away.As I was nearing the bus stop,I saw a woman rushing towards it from the opposite direction, behind whom was a little boy.
Suddenly,a motorcycle sped past me,almost knocking me down. "Hey!Are you mad?" I shouted at the motorcyclist. He turned to look at me,saying, "Sorry." However, for a split second,he just sped on.Then he was heading right for the woman and little boy! "Watch out!Watch out!" I shouted.I saw the lady turn her head to look at the motorcyclist, with a look of shock on her face.
In an instant, the motorcyclist reached the woman and accidentally hit her.The hit made the woman move backward. The woman and the boy fell on the road, landing right in the path of a truck. "Stop!Stop!" I screamed at the motorcyclist and the truck driver, waving my arms wildly in the air.Thankfully, the truck driver had seen what was happening. With a sudden brake, the truck stopped a few meters from the spot where the woman and the boy had fallen.Meanwhile, the motorcyclist stopped. He kept apologizing, explaining he was in a hurry to the hospital to see his sick mother.
I saw the woman climbing towards the crying child.Pulling over to the side of the road,I ran to help them.By the time I get there, the truck driver had reached them.He picked up the child in his arms and examined his legs.
"I think your little boy is all right," said the truck driver. "How about you?Do you feel any pain?" The lady replied anxiously, "Please help me.I am pregnant(懷孕的)."

  • 3.Driving on the mountain roads where I live can be both a great pleasure and an adventure at times.Yet,you should always look out for holes, deer, skunks and squirrels crossing the road,as well as fallen trees and broken rocks that have rolled down the side of the hill.
I came upon one of those rocks just the other day.I saw a car turn around it and the truck just ahead of me run over it.I turned too and then quickly pulled over to a wide place.I knew a rock that size would break parts of a low riding car like mine if the driver didn't see it in time to move.I walked over and picked up the huge stone. It must have weighed 50 pounds but I tried my best ,and finally I got it into the ditch(溝) and walked smiling back to my car.
The happening reminded me of an old story I had read once.In a faraway land a king had placed a huge rock on the road leading to his palace. Many nobles walked by and around it complaining(抱怨) that the king didn't keep the road up better. Finally,a poor farmer arrived pulling a cart of vegetables. He stopped and rolled the rock off the road with all his strength. Then he saw under it was a bag of gold coins that the king had left for the one who cleared the path for those who came after.
Now while there wasn't any bag of treasure under the rock I moved,my heart did feel a little more golden as I walked back to my car.Maybe the real reward(獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)) is the love we feel, the good we do and the kindness we share. Then an idea came to my mind:why not make the road safer to drive on?
