People use the proverb "seeing is believing" to describe situations where it's hard to believe something is possible if you haven't seen it happen.I am here today to tell you that the proverb is true and to share with you how a girl and her grandmother made a positive transformation in a community.
It was a year ago when I was studying life cycles in my science class.I wrote a paper about the life cycle of the monarch butterfly (帝王蝶) and received a perfect score.I was so thrilled;I called my grandmother Nana and told her the exciting news.My talk recalled memories from Nana's childhood. "I remember when I was a girl," she said, "those orange and black butterflies were a common sight.Come late summer, there would suddenly be hundreds of them, and before long there were so many it felt like you were standing in an orange cloud."
"It sounds like you witnessed a migration (遷徙),but what happened to them?" I asked. "To be honest,I've never known," Nana admitted. "But there do seem to be fewer monarchs around the neighborhood." Nana and I decided to investigate.
That weekend,we met at the public library. Our research produced plenty of information:some fascinating and some concerning.Apparently, the number of monarchs has been in decline for the last several decades.Housing developments have destroyed much of their habitat (棲息地).Some information was hopeful, though, like how conservationists are working to save them.
The best was this- it doesn't take lots of money or equipment to do so.It takes only a little bit of land, some seeds, and dedicated people to create what's called a Monarch Waystation (驛站). "What if we set up our own Monarch Waystation?" I suggested. "We'll need people to help."
Nana responded immediately and didn't waste time to get started.

1.This story happened to me many years ago,but I can still remember it well. When I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, there was one occasion when I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for New Year.On my way,I found that my car was running out of gas.So I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash counter,I said hello to a couple who were also paying for gas and they responded with their warm smiles.
I took off,but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car.My car just broke down. What big trouble!I stopped and was wondering what I should do next when a car pulled up behind me.It was the couple I had spoken with at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's.We chatted happily on the way to the city, and when I arrived and got off the car,the husband gave me his business card.
Upon arriving home,I wrote a thank-you note to the couple for their help.Soon afterwards,I received a New Year present from them.In their note they said that helping me had made their holidays more meaningful.
Years later,I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in an early morning.Road conditions were quite poor on the way and it was said that cars broke down frequently there.Anyway,I got there safe and sound. After the meeting,I returned to my car and found that I'd got a flat tire.I was at a loss when I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership—a shop selling Ford cars—was right next door.I walked over and found two workers in the showroom.

2.Whether we notice it or not,our child is a little reflection of ourselves. They grow up looking more and more like us.They even have similar personalities and hobbies. And in some cases, the standard of choosing a good friend.
One day,my 10-year-old Jane said, "Mom,I made a new friend at school today. Can she come over tomorrow?" Her words made me extremely happy because Jane was a shy girl and I wanted her to make some friends to bring her out of her shell.
"Sure, honey, that sounds great." I said, thinking back to my own childhood best friend,Susan. We lived across the street from each other in Washington Heights,New York.We met at the age of 10,too.Like my daughter.I was shy and had trouble making friends. But Susan drew me out.She was one of the friendliest people in school, with shiny black hair and a mile-wide smile. Thanks to Susan.I was happy every day.
In senior high school,Susan went on a trip to Florida. This was the first time we had to be away from each other for a few days. "I'll be back soon and I will write to you as soon as I arrive." she told me.But I didn't get her phone call nor receive any mail from her.Soon,my family moved to New Jersey, making my hope of seeing Susan impossible.
Whenever I thought of him, tears came into my eyes.
The next day Jane brought her new friend home. "Hi,Mrs.Smith." the little girl said. Her hair was so shiny and black and she gave me a big smile. "My name is Jo.My mom will pick me up 2 hours later."

3.閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)所給情節(jié)進(jìn)行續(xù)寫,使之構(gòu)成一個(gè)完整的故事.
The darkness was gathering as she wobbled(顫顫巍?。﹊n high heels(高跟鞋) along the side of the highway. The car had come to an unexpected stop, and like a normal teenager she did the only thing she could think of…get out and walk.
It was cold and late, and home was far away. This could be a long night. If only someone would stop and offer her a ride. She prayed for help and dragged herself forward.
The lights of a truck shone from behind as it approached. "Maybe he will stop," she hoped. The brake lights flashed on as it stopped.Next moment, the car door opened.A wordless invitation was extended and she understood.Without hesitation, the girl climbed up into the seat and closed the door.Slowly the truck pulled back onto the road and disappeared into the night, never to be seen again.
I woke up in a cold sweat, frightened. Was it a dream or was it a vision? It was unbelievably real, and the girl was my daughter!I jumped from my bed and ran to her room. Her bed was empty.
I stood in horror trying to think why she hadn't come home.As the mental fog began to lift,I remembered she was visiting her friend that evening.Perhaps she stayed there for the night. It was 1:30 a.m.,but I raced to the phone and dialed a number.
"Hello?" The voice was heavy with sleep.
"Hey.Sorry to wake you.Becki didn't come home tonight and I was wondering if she stayed at your place."
"No,she left here a few hours ago.She should have been home at least by midnight!" The voice on the other end began to reflect my own panic.
Over the next forty-five minutes I alternated between lying in pray and pacing the floor in anxiety.
At 2:15 a.m.lights appeared as a car turned up our long driveway.I could tell immediately that it was not my daughter's car.
