Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day,Robert and Henry were going home from school, when,on turning a corner,Robert cried out, "A fight!Let's go and see!"
"No" said Henry. "Let us go quietly home and not meddle with(插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me. "
"You are a coward(懦夫),and afraid to go, " said Robert, and off he ran.Henry went straight(直接) home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.
But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on,they looked down upon(看不起) Henry and didn't want to play with him together.
Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he knew that they misunderstood(誤解) him,and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus,he just ignored the other boys' laughter(笑) and continued to go to school and study as well. However,Robert didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore.Instead,he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward.Every day after school, they didn't go straight home but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.
A few days later,Robert was bathing(戲水) with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled and cried for help, but he failed. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did nothing to help him.

It was a cold, snowy evening.Tommy was running as fast as he could, focused on nothing but his destination — the shop on the street comer. Two weeks ago he saw figurines(小塑像)of Marvel superheroes on the shelves and felt he had to have one. He's been walking the neighbor's dog ever since then to earn money to fulfill his little dream. He was so excited and barely noticing the world around him.Maybe that's why he tripped over the legs of a homeless woman, who was sitting on the pavement, her back against the wall.He murmured(低語)"sorry" and moved on to his destination.
Once he entered the shop,he went straight to the shelves with figurines.Hulk,Thor,Captain America,Iron Man,and many more — all of his admired heroes. With his heart pounding like crazy he reached for Spiderman.
       "You like these,true believer?"
Tommy turned around. An old man was standing behind him with a wide smile on his face.
"Y-yes,...Yes,they're awesome!" answered Tommy. "They're strong and fast and help other people a lot ..." the boy looked at figurines in admiration. "I wish I could be a superhero(超級英雄)too."
"Then become one!" said the old man.
"How?" Tommy asked in surprise. "I don't have any superpowers."
"And why would you need them?" the old man smiled.Seeing the confusion on the boy's face,he squatted(蹲下)and put his hands on Tommy's arms. "Did you know that shopkeeper lady over there has a disabled husband? She's been working hard and taking care of him for years.I've never heard a word of complaint from her.And this person —" he pointed at a redhead man,who just entered the shop. "He's a firefighter,he's saved countless lives. He never gives up,no matter how dangerous the situation seems to be."
The old man looked Tommy in the eyes and smiled. "You don't need a superpower to be a hero for someone else. The path of a superhero starts not in the mind, not in the muscles, but in the heart."

Some people are just doomed(注定) to be failures. That's the way some adults look at troubled kids.A bird with a broken wing will never fly as high.David was made to feel this way almost every day in school.
David was the most famous troublemaker in high school. He wasn't confident and didn't answer questions. From time to time he skipped classes and got into lots of fights.Teachers didn't want to have him again the following year. However, things gradually changed during a weekend leadership meeting. All the students at school had been invited to sign up for ACE training,a program designed to have students become more involved in their communities.
At the start of the meeting,David was literally standing outside the circle of students, against the back wall, with that"go ahead, impress me"look on his face.He didn't readily join the discussion groups. But slowly, the interactive games drew him in the discussion.David started to join them and he really had great ideas. The other students in David's group welcomed his comments. All of a sudden David felt like a part of the group.
The next day,David was very active in all the sessions.By the end of the meeting,he had joined the Homeless Project team.He knew something about poverty, hunger and hopelessness. The other students on the team were impressed with his passionate concern and ideas. They elected David co-chairman of the team.
The very first community service project organized by the Homeless Project team was to collect food for the homeless in the charge of David. But a group of teachers doubted whether this crucial beginning should be in the hands of David. The principal reminded them that the purpose of the ACE program was to uncover any positive passion that a student had and reinforce(加強) its practice until true change can take place.

  • 3.Brave Dog wasn't always his name.In the beginning he was just Stray Dog(流浪狗).
I saw him for the first time one evening when Mattie and I went to milk the cows.He was all dusty coat and skinny-ribbed(皮包骨頭的),hardly worth a second glance. But Mattie made a beeline for him, reaching out to pet him, "What a pretty dog!" The dog looked unsure,as if he weren't used to being spoken to kindly.I grabbed Mattie's arm. "Keep away from that stray dog," I told her,"You know how Dad feels about stray dogs." "Don't call him Stray Dog," said Mattie. "He's a pretty dog." The dog licked her face and put a paw on her shoulder.Mattie threw her arms around his neck. "I,m keeping him." She declared, "I'm calling him Pretty Dog."
To Mattie,he was Pretty Dog.She talked to him, played with him and fed him secretly. He responded by following her like a shadow when no one else was around. To the rest of us,he was Stray dog.We did everything we could to chase him away, but he kept coming back. One day,Dad accidentally caught Mattie sneaking Stray Dog a piece of leftover roast meat. "Mattie!Get away from That Dog!" Dad shouted,"Where's your common sense, girl? We don't waste good food on stray animals. You see That Dog again, you send him away!" So,Stray Dog became That Dog.
One cold winter day,Dad set off to go ice fishing.Mattie had begged to go,but Dad said no. "You'll only fuss about cold," he said, tweaking(捏,扯)her pigtail(每子)."I want to do some serious fishing."
Dad came home a few hours later. "Got some fine ones," he shouted from the porch(門廊). "Come see!" Ma and I came out. "Where's Mattie?" Dad asked.Ma and I looked at each other in confusion, both thinking Mattie was with the other. Then,Ma strode to the closet. "Her coat and boots are gone." Ma turned to Dad with troubled eyes, "Maybe she went after you." Worry lines creased(弄皺)Dad's face. "She never came to thelake.Come on,we need to find her."
