How much do you really know about the traditional Chinese art?Even as a person who was born and raised in China,I was only introduced to traditional Chinese art by my grandpa, who is a fan of Chinese open and calligraphy (書(shū)法).Today,it seems that many of these traditional Chinese arts have disappeared.
That is a pity, since these traditional art forms can offer a look into Chinese culture. In addition to shadow puppet shows and paper cutting, today we will take a look at three major art forms.
Peking Opera (京?。?br />   Praised as one of the national treasures of China,Peking opera put skillful singing, attractive acrobatics (雜技) colorful clothes, and moving storytelling together to create a stage experience unlike any other.Peking opera was very popular during the Qing dynasty, and now it is still kept as an art form throughout the whole country.
Chinese Zither (古箏)
The Chinese zither is a plucked musical string instrument (弦樂(lè)器) dating from the warring states period (戰(zhàn)國(guó)時(shí)期).The musician presses the strings with the left hand, and plucks the strings with the right hand, usually with picks joined to the tips of the fingers,Even though the Chinese zither has been around for more than two thousand years,it has not lost its attraction.Modern musicians are finding ways to add the Chinese zither into rock, jazz, and even hip hop.
Chinese Calligraphy
Calligraphy refers to the way of wrjye.aiing.It has lasted for more than 2,000 years, and developed into five ways of writing, each with different techniques.Brush pens made from the finest animal hair are used as tools.Today,Chinese calligraphy is still a highly respected and popular art form. Many Chinese school children are sent to learn traditional calligraphy.
Have you tried any of these traditional Chinese art forms?

  • 3."Colour" and "color", "favourite" and "favorite", "honour" and "honor"...Have you ever wondered why Americans spell those words without a "u"?Is it because they are lazy?
Of course not.In fact, the difference in spelling was started by Noah Webster(1758-1843).He was a teacher who reformed 'English to make American identity stronger.Linguists celebrate his birthday on October 16 every year.
After the Revolutionary War(1775 - 1783),Webster believed that Americans should have their own dictionary, rather than rely on British dictionaries.
He dropped the British "u" in some words. And he changed "centre" into "center" for children to learn English by spelling words more like what they sounded. He used "subway" instead of British word "underground".Some other examples are "soccer" and "football", "fall" and "autumn".
Webster wasn't shy about expressing his opjye.aiions.In defining" preposterous (unreasonable),he wrote: "A republican government in the hands of female is preposterous.
Webster spent 28 years on the project before completing the 70,000-word dictionary with his American-style spelling in 1828.He also added local words.
His dictionary was widely used in schools.Linguists believed it helped a new country achieve unity" and cultural independence at a time when most people cared about political freedom.
"He was the creator of our language and the creator of American identity," said Joshua Kendall, who is working on a book about Webster. "He at last brought us together through our language.
