Astypalea,a butterfly-shaped island in the central Aegean, hopes to become Greece's first carbon-free tourist destination.Under a deal with the government,Volkswagen(大眾汽車),has donated several new electric vehicles for use by Astypalea's public services. It will sell others at cost price to its 1,200 residents. In return, the government has largely increased subsidies (補(bǔ)貼) for the islanders to buy electric scars and will build a hybrid(混合的) solar and wind power plant to replace those polluting generators.
Unlike other nearby islands,Astypalea 1s not connected to Greece's electricity system. With only 3,000 rooms for visitors in small hotels or flats, tourism is still low-key.Many residents make a living in the old-fashioned way:raising goats, keeping bees and fishing. The island was selected for Volkswagen's e-mobility experiment after Nikos Komineas, the go-ahead mayor, contacted the transport ministry for help in finding an electric bus to try out on its rough roads.
Most islanders sound enthusiastic about the project.Mr.Komineas expects the number of private cars on Astypalea to fall by a third over .the next five years. Its residents,he says, will get around on e-scooters and electric minibuses, which will be free, linked to a mobile-phone app and available round the clock.
Some observers find a bit of green washing.Building a solar park that would produce the island's electricity will not get started before the tourist season ends.A single wind turbine(渦輪) will not be fixed before 2026 even if the licensing process-goes smoothly,On the other hand, the islanders worry that tourists will go elsewhere if the view is destroyed by a turbine 200 meters high. And even then, the hybrid power unit is planned to cover only about 80% of summer demand. But it is a start.

1.Seeing a volcano erupt is a wonderful experience, and you can really feel the heat by climbing to the summit(山頂) of Pacaya for a close-up view. There are guided tours every day up this highly active volcano from Antigua, giving travelers a chance to see Mother Nature at her most powerful.
Pacaya is an easy drive from Antigua,a beautiful city with many colorful houses along its old streets that are turned into art-works during its Holy Week Festival. No matter when you come to Antigua, you won't miss the Pacaya-tour companies.
But climbing Pacaya is no easy job,it is 2,560 metres high, and reaching the summit takes two to three hours of seemingly one step forward and two-step back movements. As you climb, you hear the dull sounds of eruptions high above.Steaming, hot remains from recent eruptions begin to line the path as you near the active summit:the McKenney Cone(火山錐).Just as though you are going to walk over to the edge of the cone, the road turns to the left and up to the relative safety of the old, inactive summit.
Many tours are timed so that you arrive at the cone of the volcano in plenty of time for sunset and the full contrast between the erupting red lava and the darkening sky.On a good day the view from the summit is extremely exciting. The active mouth boils, sending red lava over its sides, and once in a while shoots hot streams up to 100 metres into the air. There is a strong bad smell in the air even if you take care to be upwind of the cone.As evening turns deeper into the night, the burning lava quietly falls down the side of the volcano. For you,too ,it is time to get down.

3.The sky is a large place, and though it has been carefully examined for centuries, new features still turn up.Last March it was the rule of Uranus(天王星),and last week astronomers announced what may turn out to be a new planet, though a very small one,in the solar system.
The object was first sighted last month by Charles Kowal,an astronomer at the Hale Observatories in Pasadena,Calif.Mr Kowal observed a faint trail of light on photographic plates, indicating that something was moving in relation to the background of stars.Other observers have confirmed the discovery.
The "mini-planet",identified for the time being as "Object-Kowal",appears to be about 1.5 billion miles away, between the orbit of Saturn and Uranus, and its diameter(直徑)has been estimated at between 100 and 400 miles. Its orbit has not been determined yet,but if the orbit proves to be roughly circular, like that of the major planets, the new object would probably take 66 to 70 years to make a circuit of the sun.
Some astronomers have speculated that Mr Kowal's discovery may be the first indication of an asteroid(小行星)belt beyond Saturn.

A.What the object is like.
B.How the object was found.
C.Where the astronomers live.
D.Why the object was moving.
