Parents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends. Is this a good thing?Sometimes, when Mr.Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter,Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests they both enjoy, such as pop culture,he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager.
"I would never have said to my mom,'Hey,the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it?'"says Ballmer."There was just a complete gap in taste."
Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits(軌道).
Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families. And parent-child activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood.
But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents."There's still a lot of strictness and authority(權(quán)威) on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening,"says Kerrie,a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College."In the
middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents."
Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these changing roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point.Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more democratic(民主的) process that encourages everyone to have a say.
"My parents were on the'before' side of that change, but today's parents, the 40-year-olds,were on the'after' side,"explains Mr.Ballmer."It's not something easily achieved by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now."

1.Cities are likely to be affected by overheating, thanks to something called the urban heat island effect.Cities tend to be short of trees, which provide shade, and they are covered with black pavement, which absorbs heat from the sun.Think of how it feels to wear a dark shirt versus a white shirt on a sunny day.A black shirt absorbs light, heating you up.But a white shirt reflects light, keeping you cool.
The average temperature in a city of a million or more people can be more than 5 degrees hotter than surrounding areas. That extra 5 degrees can turn a hot day from uncomfortable to deadly.
As temperatures rise, cities will be an especially dangerous place to be during a heat wave.To protect public health, city officials are going to make the city cooler.
As part of that effort,Los Angeles is coating its roads in CoolSeal,a gray paint that keeps streets and parking lots 10 degrees cooler than black asphalt(瀝青).It will help Angelinos save money during the summer, when air conditioning sends power bills soaring. And it will save lives by lowering temperatures and improving air quality.Hot weather worsens air pollution by turning car exhaust into smog, which can make life miserable for people with asthma(哮喘)and other breathing problems.
Of course,LA will have to do more than paint over a few streets to cool off the city.Angelinos will also need to plant more trees and apply white paint to rooftops - at least those not already covered in solar panels. While LA is a pioneer of reflective streets, other cities, like New York, are already experimenting with reflective roofs or,like Melbourne, lowering the temperature by planting trees.LA is hardly alone in its effort to stay cool.
"This is an urgent challenge, and it's much bigger than one person," said Mayor Garctti in a recent statement. "Climate change is a fact of life that people in Los Angeles and cities around the world live with every day. "
(1)What may contribute to the urban heat island effect?
A.Planting more trees in the streets.
B.Applying reflective paint to rooftops.
C.Covering the streets with white paint.
D.Covering the streets with black paint.

A.How to make the city cooler.
B.Where to wear a white shirt.
C.When to cut off the electricity supply.
D.Why to coat the roads with black paint.
(3)What benefit can people gain from the use of CoolSeal?
A.Increasing the indoor activities.
B.Reducing the number of cold days.
C.Promoting the sale of air conditioners.
D.Making life easier and more comfortable.
(4)What's the main idea of the passage?

2.There's more evidence that what's good for your heart is good for your head.A new study shows that people who run, swim or do other moderate intensity(中等強度)exercise have brains that look,on average,10 years younger than the brains of couch potatoes.
"Our study showed that for older people, getting moderate intensity exercise may be protective, helping them keep their brains work better," said Dr.Clinton Wright of the University of Miami, who led the study. But it's not necessarily easy.Walking, golf, bowling and yoga don't count, and people need to start before they begin showing memory loss,Wright's team reported in the journal Neurology.
The study of nearly 900 people who exercise regularly showed that 90 percent fell into the low-intensity group. These people are part of a larger group taking part in a bigger study called Northern Manhattan Study. They were asked how long and how often they exercised during the past two weeks.Five years later, they were tested for memory and thinking skills and got a brain MRI.Seven years after that, they took the memory and thinking tests again. The 10 percent who said they took part in moderate intensity exercise scored better on the tests. These included running, climbing, swimming, riding bicycles and so on.
"We found that those with moderate intensity activity had higher scores and slower decline than inactive people when comparing the results," the study team wrote.
Many studies have shown that exercise may not prevent Alzheimer's disease but may delay it.The findings fit in with a study that found two years of exercising, eating healthier food and brain training can promote people's memory function.

A.Most people surveyed took low-intensity exercise.
B.Only 900 people took part in the bigger study.
C.High-intensity exercise is better.
D.Ten people scored best on the tests.
(2)How did the study team come to the conclusion?
A.By observing people exercise.
B.By using examples.
C.By making a comparison.
D.By doing a brain MRI.
(3)What do we know from the last paragraph?
A.Exercise will definitely strengthen people's memory.
B.Alzheimer's disease may be held back by moderate intensity exercise.
C.Exercise can put off the beginning of memory decline.
D.The findings fit in with the study of healthy food.
(4)What's the best title for this passage?
A.How to keep health.
B.Ways to make your brain work better.
C.To exercise or not.
D.Moderate intensity exercises keeps your brain younger.發(fā)布:2025/1/1 12:0:1組卷:3引用:3難度:0.5 -

The year 2008 was a significant one for Zhang.Chinese jade art was introduced internationally through the "Chinese Seal" Olympic symbol and the jade-carved medals.Zhang participated in the design of both. They combined white jade with gold,a light greenish jade with silver, and a gray shade of jade with bronze to make the medals present that perfect combination of truthfulness and virtue.
Following his Olympic work,Zhang was invited to restore the jade decorations in the Palace Museum.During this assignment,Zhang couldn't help but feel sad as he realized how the once successful jade artistry was slowly disappearing from its once celebrated stage. As an inheritor of Beijing jade carving,Zhang has added modern artistic elements into this traditional skill. He now hopes more young people can take up the craftsmanship so it can continue to flourish for many years to come.
