My mother loves flowers. As soon as warm weather comes around, you will find her planting, watering, and weeding over everything. For a number of years we lived next door to each other, and she spent as much time in my garden as she did her own. After the flowers became plentiful(充足的,豐富的) each summer, she would cut colorful bouquets(花束) to enjoy inside the house -- both hers and mine.I would often come home from work and find a beautiful arrangement of fresh flowers on my coffee table.
Shortly before Christmas one year,a local flower shop offered a bouquet-a-month special. It seemed to be a made-to-order gift for Mom,a great way to thank her for all of the flowers she had given me through the years.
After the holidays,in early January,I drove her to the flower shop to pick up her first month's bouquet. The small fresh colorful bouquet would hardly fill a small vase(花瓶).
I was so embarrassed(尷尬的).However, after we returned home, she began to arrange the flowers she had received. "Mom,I'm sorry,"I told her."I can't believe how skimpy that bouquet is." She looked at me and smiled. "It's okay,"she said."It allows me to better enjoy the beauty of each one."
Mom's words helped me to realize something bigger and more important --when we have too many good things,we often fail to enjoy the beauty of each one.
Thanks,Mom,for helping me understand that less is sometimes more.

1.I was out for an evening with a friend, getting the relief from pressure and catching up on our lives. We got around to the subject of books.
"When do you read?" my friend asked me.My mind took off on a fast journey through my bookshelves and piles of looks.I know some people make artsy towers and pyramids out of books, but I'm not that kind of woman.Mine are just…stacks (摞).Stacks on end tables, stacks on the floor.
When do I read?I read when I'm happy.I read when I'm bored.I read when I'm defeated.I read when I'm filled with anxiety. My self-medication for the thoughts is not exercise or alcohol, but Jane Austen.I absolutely must slow down the pace of my thoughts when living through a walk to the town Meryton in Pride and Prejudice.I read to visit places I'll never see in real life.Thank you,Vikram Seth, for making me completely involved in 1950s India.Thank you,Khaled Hosseini, for giving me a chance to see 1970s high society of New York City.I'll spend some time with Edith Wharton.I read when I'm recalling the good old days. Many of my favorite books of childhood are still my favorite books.I read when I get so addicted to an author that I want to read everything she has ever written, including her Christmas cards and grocery lists.
Of course,I didn't say any of these things to my friend.I stared at her with a blank, foolish look.
"When do I read?" I repeated.
"Yes.When do you find time?" she asked.

3.Just this morning,my 11-year-old son shared with me a "really sad dream".Keep in mind that this is from a boy who watches very little war news, who rarely hears his parents talk of war,who has no relatives personally involved in the war.The dream went something like this:
All the fifth-grade boys from his school were soldiers in the war.Dylan and my son were on the Ukrainian side.Alex and others were fighting together with the Russians. These and other friends were found on both sides of the conflict, but none of them wanted to kill each other. They were actually trying to help and protect one another. Then a Russian soldier who was not someone the boys knew attacked Dylan.Alex and Andrew tried to warn Dylan and stop the attack, but it was too late.Dylan died. And it was very sad.
Besides the emotional power of the distant war expressing itself in my son's life, what impressed me about his dream was that there were good people fighting on both sides. Is that an 11-year-old's myth,or could it really be true?I affirmed (肯定) his concern for all the people directly involved in the war,all of which was pretty much in line with what the experts advise.
My son doesn't get much news exposure from television, vastly preferring kid entertainment when he has a choice. And that's.jye.ai as well.In fact, limiting children's media exposure to war is one of the key suggestions the experts make.
However, there are questions and concerns. For weeks,my son has been praying daily that we will not go to war.Now he prays the war will end soon, and that people will not get hurt or killed.A few days ago,he voiced the almost casual question, "Will the war come to Oklahoma?" I answered no,and we agreed that we are fortunate to be far from the war.And yet,I think my son already understands that disaster — including the intentional horror of terrorism — can happen anywhere, like New York,Washington or even Oklahoma City. But still, that's hardly the same as living with a daily personal fear or expectation of war reaching your home.
Tonight I kissed my boy goodnight and put him to bed,as again he prayed that God would help the war to end soon.I wonder how many more nights he will have to say that prayer…

B.Stop thinking too much about the war.
C.Show concern for whoever suffers from the war.
D.Encourage children to be concerned about the war.
(3)How does the author feel about the war?
A.Uncertain when it will come to an end.
B.Fearful that it will come to Oklahoma.
C.Worried that it will cause more deaths.
D.Fortunate that it hasn't affected her family.
(4)What is the purpose of the text?
A.To show how the war affects a kid.
B.To show what the war is like in a kid's dream.

D.To show what attitude a kid should take to the war.發(fā)布:2025/1/1 12:0:1組卷:4引用:4難度:0.5
