A MOTHER'S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother's Day.How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge(粥).They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it.Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m.The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot(鍋) of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast(烤面包片).Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk.Jenna found the bread and put two slices(片) into the egg mixture(混合物).Next,Jeff turned on the second stove burner(爐灶) to heat up the frying pan(煎鍋).Everything was going smoothly(順利地) until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds.Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink(洗碗槽) and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam(水蒸氣) shooting out(噴射出) of the pot and the lid (蓋子)starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire.Jenna panicked(恐慌).Thankfully,Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess (一團(tuán)糟)now.Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff's hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain.Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning(糊).Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

I went up to the roof for a break after studying for an hour and watched the 50 or so people swimming in the natural rock
pool
below our house.It was a sunny day—a blue,cloudless sky over a calm sea.But then,as I looked
in the distance
,I discovered a series of three or four big waves heading towards the shore.I'd seen these mini-tsunamis(海嘯) many times before. They were heading at speed in the direction of the pool. Most people knew to look out for them, but from the screams that started coming from the beach,I could tell someone was in trouble.
Without thinking,I ran down into the street, holding my bodyboard(俯伏沖浪板) on the way and shouted at a stranger to go inside my house and call the coastguard. My neighbour Moises had heard the screaming as well and was also outside with his bodyboard,so together we rushed to the steps that led down to
the sea
.
Once we got closer,we discovered the waves had pulled
a boy and a girl
from the pool and into the open sea.I knew that the nearest
boat
would take at least
30 minutes
to reach us.Waiting for help wasn't a choice.I wasn't used to this sort of emergency —I'd never been trained as a
lifeguard
一but I didn't think twice about trying to
save them
.I suppose in a way I wanted to impress everyone;at 19,a deal like that can seem like
a good opportunity to show off
.
Moises and I dived into the water and it took us 10 minutes to get to them. When we finally ireached them.they were almost lifeless with only their heads coming in and out of the water. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths but it was clear that they wouldn't have been able to stay there
much longer
.I held the boy and pulled him over my board.Moises moved the girl onto his board. We discussed pushing them back to the shore, but we were too far out.

Tim recently graduated from the university and was looking for a job. After searching on the Internet,he found out that a famous online business company is recruiting (招聘)a new office manager. Many candidates(求職申請人)applied, but only one would be accepted in the end.
Tim was surprised to see that some of them held a Master's Degree or Doctor's Degree. But Tim was only a Bachelor(學(xué)士),and hardly met the lowest requirement.Tim felt a bit disappointed.
All the candidates entered the exam hall.Tim looked through the pages of the test paper and found out that the questions were very difficult for him.Tim tried to calm down and started with the easiest ones and moved on to the more difficult ones slowly.
There were two invigilators(監(jiān)考人)in the hall. They seemed to be quite confident about the honesty of the candidates. After about 10 minutes, one of the invigilators left to answer a phone call. The other invigilator soon went out too.
The atmosphere in the exam hall changed after the invigilators had left. Some of the candidates took out notes and books and some of them brought mobile phones to search for answers, and some even called others for help.Tim looked back, and he saw the candidate sitting behind him cheating too.The man whispered to Tim,as if telling him to cheat in the test because everyone was doing so.Tim shook his head and continued doing the difficult problems at a slow pace.
In about half an hour, the invigilators returned to the exam hall.Tim still had one question left blank at the end of the test.He was almost sure that he was not going to be accepted.
Paragraph 1:
The test result was to Tim's surprise._______
Paragraph 2:
Tim then understood everything that had happened._________

I was a volunteer for an organisation at the beginning of this year. The organisation is aimed at helping children who suffer from cancer. One day,we were asked to raise money for cancer research and program funding at an event.
Since my friend Lisa was also a volunteer for the organisation,I went to the event with her. There were many people at the event. After seeing our poster, some people came to us and talked with us.But few people donated money. It was a bit hot that day. Both Lisa and I got really upset.Half an hour later,Lisa started complaining,"I don't think we can raise much money today."
"Don't worry. The event lasts for three hours. There is still a lot of time left," I said, though I also thought poorly of our plan to raise much money that day.
While Lisa and I were talking,a little boy of about eight years old came to us.He stood in front of our poster and started reading.
After a while,he asked,"What is cancer?"
I explained what cancer is.Then I said,"Many people around the world are suffering from cancer. It can be really dangerous.More research is needed to learn about it so that people with it can suffer less. That's why we're collecting money for it."
"Do children suffer from cancer, too?" asked the boy.
"Yes.Many children suffer from cancer. Some of them may die. They need help," Lisa said and I nodded.
Hearing that, the boy became sad. Then the boy asked."How much money have you collected?"
Both Lisa and I were embarrassed to tell him that we didn't raise much money. At last,we said,"Not much."
The boy looked into our donation container and only saw a few one-dollar and five-dollar bills. The boy said nothing after seeing that and left. Then some girls came to us and we started talking with them.Neither Lisa nor I thought the boy would return. However, about twenty minutes later, the boy did return.
注意:續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150左右。
The boy happily ran to us and asked,"Would you take a donation from children?" _______
Both Lisa and I were deeply touched. ________
