Two farmers,Tom and Anne, live only kilometers apart in eastern Australia.Fifty years ago, these neighbors had much in common.Nowadays,Tom and Anne have different ideas farming.
Tom grew up on his farm. When he was young, his dad farmed about 80 acres.A big farm back then was 240 acres.Today, with the help of modern technology,Tom is able to farm 700 acres of com and rice.Tom's tractor is connected to a computer and a GPS system to help him plant seeds and spread chemical fertilizers(肥料) efficiently. Thanks to these changes,Tom produces three times more grain per acre than his father did.
Ten years ago,Anne left the city to start her small 15-acre farm. Her philosophy both then and now was to live a slower life, eat good locally grown food, and protect the environment.Anne wants to keep the soil rich for years to come. So,instead of chemical fertilizers, she makes her own from rotten(腐爛的) plant and animal materials. She mainly grows vegetables and is not as concerned about the quantity of her food as she is about its quality.
In autumn,Tom sells his grain to a large food company. Some of it is made into food products sold nationally and some is exported by ship to countries around the world.
Unlike Tom,Anne mainly sells her food at local farmer's markets and to individual customers who visit her farm.Anne's market may seem small, but it is growjye.aig.In the past ten years, the number of famor's markets has almost tripled.
Neither Tom nor Anne knows exactly what the future of farming will be.Tom never dreamt that technology could advance as far as it has today.Anne hopes farmers will plan more for future sustainability. Both hope that their farms will continue to succeed, providing people with some of their most important and basic needs.
