Levi Strauss—a name that is now famous—was the man who invented jeans.Levi Strauss was born in Germany on February 26,1829.Two years after his father died of tuberculosis (肺結(jié)核) in 1846,Levi and his sisters moved to New York, where they were met by his two older brothers who owned a NYC-based wholesale dry goods business called "J.Strauss Brother & Co." Levi soon began to learn the trade himself.
When news of the California Gold Rush made its way east,Levi went to San Francisco in 1853 to make his fortune. The men working for gold in the California Gold Rush needed very strong trousers.Strauss was the first man to begin producing special, strong trousers for working men.He made these trousers from a tough fabric (結(jié)實(shí)的織物) called "denim" (牛仔布).Later,Strauss added special metal buttons to the trousers to make them better and they immediately became very popular. Then,he renamed his company "Levi Strauss & Co".
Levi carried on other business pursuits during his career,as well.He was one of those who set up the San Francisco Board (委員會(huì)) of Trade in 1877.He was a director of the Nevada Bank, the Liverpool,London and Globe Insurance (保險(xiǎn)) Company and the San Francisco Gas and Electric Company.Besides,he also did a lot for those in need.Levi donated money to the Pacific Hebrew Orphan Asylum and Home (孤兒院) and some other welfare organizations. In 1897,Levi provided the funds for twenty-eight scholarships (獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金) at the University of California,Berkeley, all of which are still in place today.
Levi Strauss passed away on Friday,September 26th 1902.Today, "Levi Strauss & Co" is among the most famous brands in the world.
