My family,my wife,Joan, our two teenagers Hannah and Joseph, and I,live in Atlanta with our two dogs.
Ten years ago,we moved into our dream house,a very big three-story home.It was a beautiful place, but as our children grew up,our sense of togetherness (團結)began to disappear slowly. In the big house,we sometimes seemed to be strangers to each other.
One day when Hannah was 14,she became upset about the difference between the world's haves and the have-nots.She expected us to be "a family that makes a difference in the world, even if it's a small difference. " Joan asked her,"What are you willing to
sacrifice
?Your house?Your room? " Hannah said yes to both. After talking it over as a family,we decided to sell our house and move to one that was half its size and price and donate(捐贈)the difference to those in need.
After a lot of research,we chose the Hunger Project,a US-based organization. It works with villagers in Africa,Asia and South America and helps them fight against poverty(貧窮).Our money went to pay for building two centers. Each has a meeting place,a bank and a health clinic(診所).Together, the centers would serve more than 20 villages in eastern Ghana. We also traveled to meet the villagers and were blown away by their hard work and warmth.
To be honest,we were a little worried at first.Would we regard the new home as being too small for us?Or would we think we had given up too much? Two years later,I can tell you:It's the best move we have ever made. While we worked together on our family project,we became much closer. As Hannah said the other day,"We learned how to really trust each other. "
(1)After they moved into a large house,the author's family
.
A.were not as close as before
B.wanted an even larger house
C.often went travelling together
D.often let strangers share their spare rooms
(2)What does the underlined word "sacrifice" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Hope for.
B.Look for.
C.Give up.
D.Build up.
(3)Why did the author's family sell their big house?
A.To go abroad.
B.To help the poor.
C.To treat Hannah's illness.
D.To save money for the future.

French writer Annie Ernaux won the 2022 Nobel Prize in literature on Oct 6.She is the first French female to win the prize. In the words of the Nobel committee,Ernaux was given the award for the courage and sharp insight of her writing.
Having spent over five decades as a writer, the 82-year-old winner has published more than 20 books to her name, including Cleaned Out,Shame,a 2008 memoir called The Years and A Girl's Story.Rather than consider herself a writer of fiction,Ernaux has used the term "an ethnologist(民族學家)of herself" to describe herself.
Born in 1940 in a rural village in Normandy,France,Ernaux grew up in a working-class environment as her parents ran a combined grocery store and cafe. She worked as a teacher before becoming a full-time writer.
According to CNN her "upbringing and experiences navigating adolescence and adulthood" inspire many of her works. For example the book Shame explores the theme of childhood trauma while A Girl's Story follows a young woman's coming of age in the 1950s.
Though the matters Ernaux describes in her books are serious and even sometimes heavy, they are always written in plain language.Ernaux described her style as "flat writing" through which she aims to tell her stories objectively, "unshaped by florid description or overwhelming emotions." noted Fox News.
"She writes about things that no one else writes about, for instance her jealousy, her experiences as an abandoned lover and so forth,I mean, really hard experiences," Anders Olsson, chairman of the Nobel Committee for Literature said after the award announcement in Stockholm. He went on to say, "She gives words for these experiences that are very simple and striking. They are short books, but they are really moving".

Last month,my husband and I completed what some of our friends considered a foolish task:a 32-day,5,232-mile camping trip with children in our Volkswagen van, without "high technology" to occupy the children.
It was the screenless journey that showered me with doubts. But is "boredom" senseless? My friend Renee, who has driven cross country with her three kids eight times, calls boredom the mother of creativity. She's not the only one who sees virtue in blank time.In a recently published paper, researchers at the University of East Anglia in England concluded that the trance(發(fā)呆) helps recharge the mind and is "central to learning and creativity".I wasn't trying to make my kids smarter.Neither do I dislike high technology. But I understand too well the power of mini-screens to transform our kids into zombies (木訥呆板的人).
On Day 1,our seven-year old son announced "Texas is so boring!" The next day, struggling against his seat belt,he yelled he couldn't take much more of this. His five-year old sister was better in the long hours playing make believe with the stuffed animals. On Day 3 he began to count mountains and see pandas and dolphins in distant clouds in the Texas sky.I often joined the kids in the back, where we did the thumb and toe wrestle. With well known mountains ahead,my husband told the children the past legends of them. "Arizona is not as boring as Texas," our son declared.
I hope the trip gave kids some lazy, unstructured time to learn something about valuing the trip instead of looking for
the fastest way
to burn it up.I don't always make the right decision as a parent but I know that by banning the small screen we made the right choice this time.
(1)Why did the author choose a high technology free journey?
A.Her friends were highly against it.
B.She disliked advanced technology.
C.She feared the passive influence of mini screens.
D.The researchers proved the harm of modern technology.
(2)What happened during the cross country drive?
A.Their son got worse at boredom.
B.Her kids had a tough time riding in the vehicle.
C.Their son relaxed himself by watching animals outside.
D.The time spent without screens strengthened the family bond.
(3)The underlined part "the fastest way" in the last paragraph refers to
.
A.the shortest route to finish the journey
B.the ability to observe the surroundings
C.the interest of playing games with others
D.the choice of killing time by playing digital devices
(4)Which is the best title for the text?
A.Is Driving Long Distances Good for Children?
B.A Touching Cross country Trip of My Family
C.What's Wrong with Boredom Without High Technology?
D.Creative Kids out of Parents' Reasonable Choice
