When I was six years old,I visited my grandfather's farm in Kansas and he sent me into the woods to gather pecans(胡桃)for us to enjoy later. The pecans were about the size of a man's thumbnail(拇指指甲)and just about the tastiest snack I'd ever had.
However, pecan picking was really tiring and my little bucket(桶)was only half full after working hard for a long time.I thought I wouldn't let Grandpa down.Just then something caught my eye.A large brown squirrel(松鼠)was a few feet away.I watched as lie picked up a pecan, hurried to a tree, jumped up to the trunk and disappeared in a large hole.A moment later the squirrel popped back out and climbed down to the ground to pick up another nut.Once again,he took the pecan back to his hiding place inside the hollow(洞)of the tree.
Not so secret anymore,I thought.I dashed over to the tree and looked into the hole.It was filled with pecans!Golden pecans were right there for taking. This was my chance.
Handful by handful,I scooped(撿起)all of those pecans into my bucket. Now it was almost full!I was so proud of myself that I couldn't wait to show Grandpa all the pecans.
I ran back and shouted, "Look at all the pecans!" He looked into the bucket and asked, "Well, well, how did you find so many?"I told him how I'd followed the squirrel and taken the pecans from his hiding place.
Grandpa congratulated me on how smart I'd been in observing the squirrel and his habits. Then he did something that surprised me.He handed the bucket back to me and put his arm gently around my shoulders.

"That squirrel worked very hard to gather his winter supply of food," he said.______
I picked up that little bucket full of pecans and carried it back to the tree.________

【答案】"That squirrel worked very hard to gather his winter supply of food," he said. "Now that all of his pecans are gone, don't you think that little squirrel will be hungry when it gets cold?" Grandpa asked me. "I didn't think about that," I murmured with shame, blood rushing to my face.Grandpa told me seriously that a good man should never take advantage of someone else's hard work, even the squirrel's.I drooped my head, feeling as hollow as that old tree. The image of that starving squirrel wouldn't leave my mind. There was only one thing I could do.
I picked up that little bucket full of pecans and carried it back to the tree.Lifting the bucket up,I poured all of the nuts back into the hole, refilling it with not only all of the squirrel's pecans but also the ones I had collected on my own.I breathed a sigh of relief and returned home with the empty bucket.I didn't eat any of the sweet pecans that night, but I had something much more filling, which was the satisfaction of knowing I had done just the right thing.

"Happy New Year, papa!"The sitting-room doors were thrown open, and a sweet little girl flashed in.Smiles played around her cherry lips, and her eyes were dancing with sunny light.
"Happy New Year,my sweet one!"responded Mr.Edgar. "May all your New Years be happy,"he added, and with a blessing in his heart.
Little Ellen laid her head against her father's breast. To her it was a Happy New Year's morning, but it was not so with Mr.Edgar,a successful businessman. He was tired of the plot in the business world. He was not happy at all! "For years,"he said to himself,"I have been pursuing the means of happiness, yet happiness itself seems to be still farther in the distance.""Why am I not happy?"But the answer was not given.
After breakfast,Mr.Edgar left home and went to his company. On his way,he noticed a lovely child around the same age as his daughter playing in the yard. Her beauty, which had in it something of innocence (天真),impressed him so deeply that he turned to gain a second look. With the girl was a father and he happened to be Abraham James, who owed(欠) money to Mr.Edgar from their business dealings.Abraham couldn't meet his responsibilities to Mr.Edgar, and as a result,Mr.Edgar said some unkind words.Mr.Edgar had an appointment with a lawyer(律師) today, preparing to charge him and ask for money he was owed. While the money wasn't a significant amount for Mr.Edgar,it meant a lot to Abraham James, who planned to sell his house to come up with the money.
As Mr.Edgar continued on his way,he couldn't forget the cheerful face of the child.Suddenly,he remembered his own daughter's smiling face and sweet morning greeting. He thought,"She must also wish her Daddy a happy New Year.If her Dad isn't happy, will she still wear that innocent smile on her face?"He seemed to have found the way to be happy.
